Due to a change in their jobs, Jack and Laura need to find a new place to live. They remembered an old house owned by their uncle in the family and decided to move there with their children, Amy and Nick. They reached an agreement with their uncle that once they find a suitable place in the city, they will move there immediately.
This house, located in a remote area, has been rented out by the descendants of their great-uncle since his passing. However, due to its inconvenient location and lack of immediate housing needs, it has remained unoccupied during this time.
Jack parked the car in the rundown yard, leaving shallow tracks in the muddy ground with the wheels. As he opened the car door and turned to the back seat, he called out, "Amy, Nick, have you guys come down? We're here!" His face was filled with excitement as his gaze passed through the car window, illuminating an ancient house.
Amy and Nick got out of the car and were somewhat surprised by the scene in front of them.
Sister, Amy, twelve years old, wearing simple jeans and a short-sleeved T-shirt, frowned as she looked at the tired-looking house in front of her. The building was not tall but spacious, with a sense of age.
Nick, eight years old, a little boy with a messy head of golden hair, looked a bit surprised. His eyes were instantly drawn to the ancient, towering tree on the left side of the house.
"Mom, is this the place we're going to live next?" Amy's tone revealed a hint of uncertainty.
Laura walked over, adjusting her scarf as she answered, "Yeah, isn't it special? Don't you feel a unique atmosphere here?"
"It's definitely special, but I can't agree with the unique atmosphere," Amy squinted, "That tree looks strange, like it wants to blend in with the house."
"Haha, have you been watching too many horror movies, sis?" Nick laughed.
"Hmph, you might regret saying that one day," Amy retorted.
Jack walked over at this time, his gaze sweeping back and forth between the house and the big tree. "What do you think of this place? Doesn't it have a kind of... ancient and mysterious charm?"
"There is definitely an ancient feel, but I wouldn't dare say it's mysterious," Nick replied with a hint of humor.
Jack shook his head. "You kids lack imagination. Anyway, let's go inside and take a look."
The house was a Victorian-style mansion, with a towering roof adorned with intricate reliefs.
Surrounded by barbed wire and bushes, it seems to guard a mysterious world. However, the most unsettling thing is the huge tree on the left side of the house. Its trunk is twisted and its branches are tangled, as if it is merging with a corner of the house.
"Wow, this place is... different," Nick's eyes are fixed on the tree, feeling like every node is flashing with eerie light.
Laura smiled and took out an ancient key with a handmade lucky charm attached to it. "It's a bit strange, but being so far from the city, this place feels like a hidden countryside!"
Jack set down his luggage and scanned the houses in the distance. He saw three buildings not far away, each with a different exterior, as if each one held a different story. "We only have a few neighbors nearby, so it should be very quiet."
"Curiosity killed the cat, but we are not cats," Amy blinked and, like the wind, crossed the threshold, pulling Nick towards the depths of the house.
As they stepped into the house, they were drawn to the style in front of them. Classical decor, high ceilings adorned with exquisite crystal chandeliers, and behind every door, different styles of wallpaper and carpets.
The French romantic wallpaper carries a faint rose scent, while the English countryside carpet has the greenery of a meadow.
"You guys go explore, your mom and I are going to start organizing things," Jack opened a moving box filled with ancient books and delicate glassware.
"Okay, Dad!" Amy and Nick both agreed, seemingly having forgotten about the unsettling tree outside.
Amy and Nick stood before a magnificent ancient house, which was their temporary new home. After a while, their parents would find a house in the city and they would move there, as agreed with their uncle.
Away from the bustling city, this new home exuded a mysterious charm. Twisting old trees surrounded the house, their gnarled roots blending almost perfectly with the old building. A scent of musty odor mixed with the aroma of ancient wood permeated the air.
Amy took a sniff and wrinkled her brow. "I can smell wood and a hint of musty odor. Hmm, it's like the smell of time passing by."
Nick turned his head with great interest and said, "Hmm, this smell reminds me of those ancient books and papers."
Their mother, Laura, smiled and said, "Go ahead, children, have some free time to explore this interesting house." She lightly took hold of their father, Jack, with a look full of love in her eyes.
Excitedly, Nick walked over to the nearby study, scanning the row of old books with leather spines that had been worn smooth. He casually picked up a book called "Collection of Bizarre Stories" and gently flipped it open. Nick always had a curiosity for mysterious and unusual things.
At the same time, Amy strolled into the living room. The old furniture, such as the wooden chairs and fabric sofas that seemed to have weathered a hundred years, and the fireplace, all bore the marks of time. Her gaze was drawn to a painting hanging on the wall.
It depicted a man in ancient noble attire, his eyes so cold and indifferent, exuding an air of arrogance.
"How do you feel about this painting?" Jack walked over and stood next to Amy.
"Well, it feels a bit... unsettling," Amy replied, still drawn to the gaze of the man in the painting.
"That's your great-grandfather's brother, a very successful businessman," Jack added. "He had a son who suddenly disappeared when he was ten."
Amy was startled. "Disappeared? How could such a mysterious thing happen in our family?"
"I'm not sure, that was almost a hundred years ago," Jack's tone revealed a hint of regret.
Two children are like a pair of adventurers, splitting up to explore.
Sister Amy quickly arrived at a study filled with a sense of technology, with shelves full of various ancient books and modern technological products. She couldn't help but open a book, only to find that the text inside was made up of symbols she had never seen before.
At the same time, younger brother Nick was exploring on the first floor. He opened the kitchen, bathroom, and even found a music room filled with instruments.
Later, Nick walked into a room that looked like a child's room. The walls were painted with various cartoon characters, but their expressions had become twisted and terrifying.
"Amy, come and see this!" Nick shouted.
Upon hearing the call, Amy quickly set down her book and ran over to Nick. "Wow, this room is so strange!"
"Right? Look at these cartoon characters, their eyes are so strange!"
At that moment, Amy suddenly remembered something. "Nick, did you count how many doors are in this house just now?"
"Yeah, I counted nine."
"It's impossible, I counted and there are ten doors!"
Nick was taken aback, "Then let's go find where the tenth door is, sister!"
The two decided to count again. They counted from the first floor to the second floor, and finally returned to the first floor. Just then, Amy discovered the unusual place.
"Nick, come and look here," Amy stood on the left side of the house near the giant tree. She found that a door appeared in the recessed wall, and the size of this door was only half the size of a regular door. It was just right for children to pass through, but adults would have to bend down and crawl to enter.
"Oh my, what is this? I definitely didn't see this just now," Nick also froze.
Amy stood in front of the small door, as if drawn to it, forcing her to bend down and examine it carefully.
The bark almost blends into the wall, as if an unknown force is connecting them together. The door is so small that only a child could easily pass through, making one doubt its purpose.
"When I first saw it, I didn't pay much attention, but now it does seem a bit eerie," Amy bit her lip, feeling the unease creeping up to her cheeks.
"Do you want to... give it a try?" Nick said, mustering up the courage, while noticing the hesitation on his sister's face.
Amy hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Let's do it together. But let's go back and tell Mom and Dad what we're doing, just in case."
Nick nodded and followed Amy into the living room. Both of them had a series of questions in their minds: Where would that small door lead to?
