"I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I heard a sound, but I didn't react in time..." Ming Juan, not caring to guess Miao Dongye's expression at that moment, waved her hands in confusion and finally chose to gently rub Miao Dongye's injured ankle with her hands.
"Can you stand up? Should I carry you to the school nurse?" Ming Juan asked eagerly.
Miao Dongye did not answer her, as he could only stare blankly in the darkness at Ming Juan's panicked state.
"She really doesn't act like a spoiled young lady at all," Miao Dongye thought to himself.
Ming Juan tried to lift Miao Dongye, but she had never helped anyone before, and besides, Miao Dongye's weight was difficult for her to bear. Ming Juan desperately wanted to pick Miao Dongye up; when her fingers brushed against his abdominal muscles, she flinched back as if shocked but still placed her hands back on him.
Seeing such a petite girl trying so hard to help him stand and lean on her shoulder, Miao Dongye initially felt a bit resentful towards Ming Juan, but her every action showed that she was genuinely sincere.
Miss Ming was sincerely apologizing to him through her actions.
"I'm fine, really!" Miao Dongye quickly cooperated with Ming Juan to stand up, but instead of resting his arm on her shoulder, he chose to gently pat Ming Juan's head as a sign of forgiveness.
"Ah!" Ming Juan shrank back in surprise.
If Ming Juan remembered correctly, the last time a man touched her hair was back in middle school, and it was her father.
"I'm really sorry. Can I take you to the school nurse?" Ming Juan couldn't possibly relax just because Miao Dongye said he was fine; she anxiously looked up at his profile in the darkness.
Having a rich young lady accompany him made Miao Dongye feel somewhat pleased. However, he knew he had other matters to attend to tonight; he was pressed for time.
"Ah... no need, really." Miao Dongye waved his hand at Ming Juan. "I still need to go to the academy; there's no time. You're already doing great."
When Ming Juan heard the last sentence, her voice suddenly caught in her throat. As memories of her family history flashed through her mind, she chose to silently lower her head and let go of the hand she had wanted to use to grab Miao Dongye.
"A girl shouldn't be out in places like this at night," Miao Dongye said as he hopped forward, turning his head back to say to Ming Juan, "I'm leaving."
"Okay!" Ming Juan was pulled out of her thoughts. "Then I..."
However, Miao Dongye didn't look back again; Ming Juan felt that he moved away much faster than she could run.
Ming Juan could easily turn back and continue hiding alone in the dark corner feeling dejected. But watching Miao Dongye gradually disappear into the black night made her soft-hearted; she couldn't shake off the feeling of guilt.
"He seemed to say he didn't have time..." Ming Juan recalled Miao Dongye's words.
After all, Miao Dongye was the senior who welcomed her. If it had been another senior who received her upon entering the school, Ming Juan could hardly guarantee that she wouldn't have been taken by Wang Ruihu as a "captured wife."
Ming Juan had seen Miao Dongye's fearlessness and sense of justice firsthand. Moreover, Wang Ruihu had been putting pressure on Miao Dongye on the school's confession wall for the past month without any response from him.
He knew that those he faced were not good people and certainly not his equals. He chose silence as a way to continue living his life, facing storms with just a smile.
He was very rational; or rather, his mind was filled with wisdom.
Ming Juan's current impression of Miao Dongye could be summed up in one sentence: A true gentleman knows when to yield and when to stand firm.
"Help him."
Before her foot even landed on the ground, Ming Juan suddenly turned and ran towards the main road not far away.
"Hey?"
"Hello, this is China Mobile. May I ask if you would like to apply for campus..."
"Uh, sorry, no."
Yu Feiyao immediately hung up the phone.
"Oh dear, so annoying," Yu Feiyao shook her head. The current internet technology is so advanced that she didn't even know how her personal information got leaked.
"Fei! Fei!"
"Huh?" Yu Feiyao had just bent down to unlock her electric bike when she saw Ming Juan running out from the dim side road and was taken aback.
"Miss, how did you come out from there?!" Yu Feiyao hurried over, but Ming Juan only grabbed her hand and pulled her back towards the electric bike.
"What happened?" Yu Feiyao asked in confusion.
"I'll explain later," Ming Juan said as she lifted her leg and hopped onto Yu Feiyao's electric bike.
"Hey hey hey! That's my bike!" Yu Feiyao rushed forward to stop Ming Juan from twisting the throttle. "I can lend it to you, but at least tell me why!"
"I..." Ming Juan didn't know how to explain her recent encounter with Miao Dongye. Surrounded by people, if anyone heard Miao Dongye's name while she was trying to disguise herself, it would be hard not to raise suspicions about her identity as Ming Juan.
"I-I have an urgent matter with my boyfriend!"
In a moment of panic, Ming Juan's mind went blank, and words blurted out without any thought.
"What... what?!" Yu Feiyao's face twisted in disbelief. "It can't be that Wang... Wang Ba, right?"
"I said I'll explain later!" Ming Juan felt like a boiling pot, bubbling with frustration. She couldn't care less at that moment; she stomped her feet on the ground and tipped over her electric bike, heading towards the corner to the north.
"This..." Yu Feiyao was completely losing it. They had just entered college a month ago, and she barely knew anyone in her class, yet Ming Juan already had a boyfriend? And as her close friend, she hadn't even known?
"Truly a young lady..." Yu Feiyao sighed, but before she could finish her thought, she choked on her words.
Passersby nearby cast strange glances at her. Some even stopped to shift their gaze from Yu Feiyao to the distant figure of Ming Juan riding away on her electric bike.
"Uh oh." Yu Feiyao broke out in a cold sweat. "I think I spoke a bit too loudly just now."
"What are you looking at? I'm just arguing with my friend; it's none of your business!" Yu Feiyao crossed her arms and pretended to be angry.
Seeing Yu Feiyao's fierce demeanor, the passersby shot her disdainful looks and walked away.
"It seems I need to work on my self-discipline," Yu Feiyao self-deprecatingly remarked as she gazed at the stars above. She decided that once the library opened for freshmen, the first book she would borrow would be the Tao Te Ching.
Meanwhile, Miao Dongye was surrounded by bustling college students during this mealtime rush hour. He was bouncing along the edge of the street, holding onto trees as he hopped forward, attracting more attention than those sexy girls in black stockings and short skirts.
"Unbelievable..." Miao Dongye wiped the sweat from his forehead; there were just too many people around him, and he was starting to feel overwhelmed.
Miao Dongye checked his phone: 6:48 PM. He had only covered about a quarter of the distance. Poor Miao Dongye could only helplessly gaze at the college area obscured by countless autumn leaves and crowds, already contemplating giving up.
"Forget it," Miao Dongye decided to head towards a long wooden bench nearby. "I'll rest before heading back to the dorm; I can always go tomorrow. As for my foot, it's not the first time I've sprained it."
Miao Dongye resigned himself to his misfortune. After all, it was his birthday today, and his application for financial aid from the school had been approved; he felt somewhat content.
"Ding—"
The sound of an electric bike horn rang out, but Miao Dongye paid it no mind—he had seen plenty of bikes going against traffic on campus.
Because he often did the same when taking shortcuts to get to class.
"Ding—"
"Ding—"
"What is it?" Miao Dongye was puzzled: could it be road rage?
He turned his head and saw Ming Juan, who was wrapped up tightly in layers of clothing, somehow managing to get an electric bike and stopping by the sidewalk to look at him.
Ming Juan couldn't call out to Miao Dongye; she could only honk frantically to grab his attention.
"Huh?" Miao Dongye wanted to explain that he could go tomorrow instead, but considering that she was a wealthy young lady who had come all this way just to see him off, refusing would be quite disrespectful.
So Miao Dongye forced a smile and hopped onto the back seat of the electric bike.
"To the Sports College," Miao Dongye told Ming Juan. She nodded and suddenly twisted her right hand; Miao Dongye felt himself being pushed back as the bike shot forward like a rocket.
Miao Dongye suddenly thought that Miss Ming should really consider becoming a race car driver with such an aggressive driving style; it didn't match either her personality or appearance at all.
"Actually..." The words that were about to leave Miao Dongye's mouth were swallowed back down; he felt that if he told Ming Juan they could go tomorrow instead, it would embarrass her.
"What do you mean actually?" The wind whipped through Ming Juan's hair and blew it into Miao Dongye's face, causing him to lean back instinctively.
"Nothing much; thank you," Miao Dongye replied. "If it were someone else, they might have expected me to apologize."
In fact, if another wealthy young lady had been treated so rudely by Miao Dongye, he probably wouldn't have been able to enjoy his time at university anymore.
"Hmph." Ming Juan casually let out a sound of acknowledgment. "I guess we're even now."
Miao Dongye responded with a soft "mm," placing his hands neatly on his knees while keeping his eyes fixed on Ming Juan's back. The wind blew up Ming Juan's sweatshirt from behind; the fabric clung tightly to her waist while bulging out in the middle.
As Miao Dongye gazed at Ming Juan's waist, he recalled Li Tao mentioning "a waist measurement of fifty-eight."
Lost in thought while admiring those exquisite curves, Miao Dongye found himself drifting into daydreams.
"Senior?"
"Senior, hey?"
"Ah... huh?" Miao Dongye blinked and looked up, realizing that Ming Juan had turned her head to look at him.
"Where is the Sports College?" Ming Juan pointed at the college area in front of them.
"Oh, you drive, I'll guide you," Miao Dongye said.
Under Miao Dongye's strangely confusing directions, the two of them seemed to circle around the college area several times before finally arriving at the entrance of the Sports College.
"Alright, thank you!" As soon as the car stopped, Miao Dongye jumped out and limped inside.
Ming Juan watched his back and pouted—was this guy really a junior? He seemed just as familiar with the college area as she was.
As she saw Miao Dongye disappear around the corner, Ming Juan prepared to turn the car around but suddenly remembered something:
"This guy hasn't accepted my friend request yet!"
She was a proper young lady from a wealthy family, and even had foreign boys trying to get her contact information online. Every day she received over fifty friend requests and was too busy rejecting them to keep up.
And this guy, given the chance, was still playing hard to get?
Ming Juan, being a young lady, let her thoughts run wild, and her tsundere temper flared up. Although she often appeared timid in public, she still maintained a certain demeanor at home.
But Miao Dongye wasn't family.
Ming Juan immediately turned her electric bike around, put it in standby mode, propped up the stand, and began pacing back and forth at the entrance.
"Fei, I'll probably be back by eight," Ming Juan sent a message along with a little bear emoji to apologize.
"No problem! Just let me know if you need anything; your loyal servant is here for you!" Yu Feiyao replied instantly.
Ming Juan couldn't help but laugh out loud; she covered her mouth and typed with one hand: "What are you saying? Be normal! I was a bit impulsive just now; I'm sorry! I still love you~"
"Come on," Yu Feiyao replied with an eye-roll emoji. "Just enjoy your time with your boyfriend. Seriously. I'm just a backup; living freely and comfortably~"
Indeed, her best friend could always tolerate her antics. With a friend like this, Ming Juan felt it was worth it for a lifetime.
Ming Juan happily put down her phone, relieved that Fei wasn't too upset after all.
"Boyfriend?"
Ming Juan gazed at the teaching building where Miao Dongye had just entered. Following her gaze, the windows on the fourth floor lit up again.
