Chen Wang frantically dialed Li Qian's number.
At first, no one answered.
Then, the call was picked up.
"Hello."
The voice of Fang Rui came through the phone.
"Where is Li Qian?"
Chen Wang asked coldly.
"She is my wife, of course I have to take her home," Fang Rui replied with a smug laugh.
"What?"
Chen Wang staggered slightly.
"What do you mean?"
"Don't you understand?" Fang Rui laughed even louder.
"Li Qian, give the phone to Li Qian."
Chen Wang shouted angrily.
"Xiaoqian."
Fang Rui called out.
Moments later, Li Qian's voice came through the phone.
"Xiaoqian, what's going on?"
Chen Wang asked anxiously.
"Xiao Wang, I'm sorry," Li Qian said calmly.
"I got back together with Fang Rui."
"Why?"
Chen Wang shouted.
"Didn't you say you loved him and wanted to be with him forever?"
"I was lying to you."
Li Qian chuckled softly.
"You really are foolish; I just made up a few things and you believed me."
"Even that marriage certificate was fake."
"You..."
Chen Wang was so angry he trembled, unable to utter a single word.
"Alright."
Fang Rui answered the phone.
"You've been deceived."
"You foolish boy, you are really easy to trick."
"No... it's impossible..."
Chen Wang fell to his knees, lost and with a vacant stare.
From that moment on, Chen Wang fell into despair.
He quit his job and spent his days hiding in his rented room.
He thought about reaching out to us, but when he went to our house, he found it had new owners.
Unable to contact us, he gave up.
His life continued to deteriorate.
Eventually, he even ran out of money for rent.
He had no choice but to sleep in the park, surviving on scraps and meager welfare.
As for Li Qian and Fang Rui, after they separated, they roamed around conning people.
They enjoyed a brief period of "glory."
However, their "glory" came quickly and faded just as fast.
The next time Chen Wang saw them was six months later.
He was wandering in the park, looking disheveled and resembling a homeless person.
Fang Rui and Li Qian were playing in the park with their child, dressed smartly and looking like successful individuals.
When Chen Wang saw them, they noticed him at the same time.
"Oh, Xiao Wang."
Li Qian linked her arm with Fang Rui's and walked toward Chen Wang with a look of surprise.
"Long time no see."
"You guys..."
Chen Wang stared at them, his body trembling slightly.
"We're doing very well."
Li Qian sweetly leaned on Fang Rui's shoulder.
"Xiaoqian..."
A hint of confusion flashed in Chen Wang's eyes.
"Xiaoqian, do you really not want me anymore?"
"What are you talking about?"
Li Qian's expression changed.
"I am Fang Rui's wife; of course I want him."
"But..."
"Xiaoqian, let's go."
Fang Rui glanced disdainfully at Chen Wang.
"Talking to someone like this is pointless."
He wrapped his arm around Li Qian and turned to leave.
"Don't go!"
Chen Wang suddenly rushed forward and grabbed Fang Rui's arm tightly.
"What are you doing?"
Fang Rui glared at Chen Wang.
"Let go of me!"
He forcefully shook off Chen Wang's hand.
However, Chen Wang still held on tightly.
"Don't go."
"Crazy!"
Fang Rui cursed angrily and pushed hard.
Chen Wang stumbled back a few steps but still didn't let go.
He pulled Fang Rui, dragging him toward the water's edge.
"What are you doing?"
Fang Rui panicked.
He struggled desperately.
Li Qian also rushed over, trying to pull Chen Wang away.
But Chen Wang seemed insane; no matter how they attacked him, he would not let go.
He dragged Fang Rui and forcefully pushed him toward the water.
"Xiaoqian, run!"
Fang Rui shouted loudly.
In a strong tug, he pulled Li Qian in with him.
"Ah!"
Li Qian screamed as she was dragged into the water by Fang Rui.
"Help!"
Li Qian cried out while sobbing.
"Help!"
Chen Wang tightened his grip around Fang Rui's neck, pushing him down into the water.
He exerted all his strength.
Fang Rui's face was pressed into a distorted shape. He struggled desperately, but Chen Wang's grip was like a vice, holding him tightly. The two of them fell into the water together. Water splashed everywhere. Li Qian stood on the shore, crying out for help. By the time the rescuers found them, both had already shown no signs of life. Li Qian looked at their bodies, weeping inconsolably.
"Alright." The police officer patted Li Qian's shoulder. "Let's go."
"Okay." Li Qian wiped her tears and followed the officer.
"Please take good care of my son," she pleaded.
"Don't worry," the officer nodded reassuringly.
Chen Wang's death was a relief for us. Out of humanitarian concern, we buried him.
"Rest in peace," we said softly as we stood before his grave. We turned around and left with our parents. The sunlight broke through the clouds and shone down on the earth. A new day had begun.
