The appearance of Qiao Yan was, for me, like an unexpected turn of events. I didn't know who he was or why he did what he did. All I knew was that he had taken me away from Ning Jing and given me freedom. Yet, there was no joy in my heart; instead, I was filled with confusion and panic. I couldn't understand why Ning Jing had so easily let go of my hand. Did he really… never love me? 0

Once this thought took root, it grew wildly like a weed, leaving me restless and at a loss. Perhaps… I really should consider my future as Qiao Yan suggested. In the following days, I deliberately avoided Ning Jing. Even at home, we barely interacted. Ning Jing seemed to sense something but didn’t ask further. His mind appeared to be elsewhere. 0

One day, while tidying up my room at home, I stumbled upon some of Ning Jing's old belongings. These items were scattered in an old box that looked like it had seen better days. Curiously, I opened the box and found a silver necklace, a worn notebook, and a picture frame inside. 0

I picked up the frame and examined it closely. It contained an old photograph that had yellowed with age. In the photo were a young man and a young woman together. The man's features bore some resemblance to Ning Jing; it must have been him in his youth. And beside him was the woman… 0

As I looked at the woman in the photograph, I felt a moment of daze. She was strikingly beautiful, with fair skin and slightly curled long hair that exuded an exceptional charm. She wore a fitted red dress, her smile radiant and her expression proud, giving off an air of superiority. 0

For some reason, upon seeing this woman for the first time, an unusual feeling rose within me. Instinctively, I picked up a nearby mirror to compare myself with the woman in the photo. 0

Then I realized... 0
That she and I actually had some similarities. 0
This discovery stirred a wave of inexplicable sorrow in my heart. 0
Holding the photo, I bit my lip and mustered the courage to walk up to Ning Jing. 0
“Ning Jing...” 0
I called his name softly. 0
Ning Jing looked up, and upon seeing the photo in my hand, his eyes flickered slightly. 0
“You...” 0
He paused and said quietly, “You found this photo?” 0
I remained silent for a few seconds before softly asking, “Who is she?” 0
Ning Jing looked at me but did not answer. 0
“It’s me.” 0
I whispered, “She is your first love, right?” 0
Ning Jing lowered his eyes and murmured an “Mm.” 0
My heart sank little by little. 0
I forced a smile and asked, “Do I... look a lot like her?” 0
“No.” 0
Ning Jing shook his head and said, “You just bear a slight resemblance.” 0
I stared blankly at Ning Jing, my mind in turmoil. 0
“So, is that why you married me back then?” 0
“Because I resemble your first love?” 0
“So in your eyes, I’m just a substitute for her, right?” 0
I gritted my teeth, trying hard not to let the tears fall. 0
Ning Jing was silent for a few seconds before quietly saying, “Yes.” 0
“You can never replace her.” 0
Ning Jing's voice was cold and merciless. 0

He ruthlessly tore apart my self-esteem and pride, pushing me into the abyss. I could no longer hold back; tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. 0

"Then why did you marry me!" I shouted hysterically. "If you love her so much, why not be with her? Why come to provoke me!" 0

"..." Ning Jing remained silent. He looked at me in silence, his gaze deep and his expression complex. After a long pause, he said softly, "Song Yao, this is fate." 0

Fate... Upon hearing that word, I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. "The fate you speak of is just a way for you to hurt me over and over again, right?" 0

"Ning Jing, how can you be so cruel!" 0

"Do you know how much I love you..." I cried, trembling all over, nearly breaking down. Yet Ning Jing remained silent. He offered no comfort or explanation; he simply stared at me without moving. 0

From that moment on, Ning Jing's attitude towards me grew even colder. He no longer came home and showed no concern for my affairs. We had completely become strangers. 0

Until one day, I happened to see Ning Jing standing by the window, his fingers unintentionally brushing over an old photograph. I noticed the fleeting look in his eyes as he gazed at the picture. In that moment, I understood. 0

In Ning Jing's heart, there had always been another woman. And I was merely a passerby and substitute in his life. 0
