Qiao Yan is my nightmare. He is Ning Jing's business rival and has been secretly observing me all along. Occasionally, he suddenly appears in my life, whispering to me in a way I cannot grasp.
"Look, Ning Jing doesn't love you at all."
"He doesn't understand you."
"Only I truly know you."
Qiao Yan's words are like a spell, leaving me with no way to escape. His presence is like a poison that I cannot resist. I know I should keep my distance from him, but it feels as if I am powerless to do so.
At a recent business banquet, I caught sight of Qiao Yan. He was dressed in a silver-gray suit, looking elegant as he held a tall wine glass, weaving through the crowd. Qiao Yan's eyes were searching for something among the people until they landed on me.
Our gazes met in midair, and Qiao Yan smiled slightly as he approached me. "Long time no see." He extended his hand, his long, clean fingers lightly brushing against the back of my hand, carrying an indescribable ambiguity.
I instinctively wanted to pull away, but in the next moment, I froze. "I heard that Ning Jing's company has been struggling lately." Qiao Yan looked at me, lowering his voice as he continued, "It seems he has encountered quite a bit of trouble."
I frowned at Qiao Yan and remained silent. "You know," he said with a light laugh, "with Ning Jing in this state, why is he still unwilling to let go?" He added, "Song Yao, he doesn't deserve you putting in so much for him."
I fell silent for a few seconds and whispered, "This is my business."
"Is it?"
Qiao Yan looked at me meaningfully and said softly, "But I can't help but feel that you seem... a bit shaken."
"What?"
"You know in your heart."
Qiao Yan smiled lightly, his gaze heavy as he looked at me and said, "Song Yao, you know just as well as I do that Ning Jing doesn't love you at all. He married you only to fulfill his family's obligations."
I stared blankly at Qiao Yan, my mind in turmoil.
He was right.
I had known this all along.
"So what?"
I bit my lip and said, "What does this have to do with you?"
"It has everything to do with me."
Qiao Yan leaned down closer to me and spoke in a very soft voice, "Because... I understand you better than Ning Jing does."
I instinctively took a step back, trying to avoid Qiao Yan's closeness.
However, Qiao Yan pressed tightly against me, like a shadow.
"Song Yao, have you ever thought about having someone else as your husband?"
Qiao Yan's gentle voice echoed in my ear like a ghost.
I widened my eyes, incredulous as I looked at him.
"What did you say?"
"I said you shouldn't continue staying by Ning Jing's side."
Qiao Yan reached out and gently brushed aside the hair from my forehead, speaking softly, "He can't give you the life you want."
The life I wanted...
I knew Qiao Yan was right.
Ning Jing truly does not understand me, and he does not love me.
After so many years of marriage, I have lived in oppression and pain. I should indeed leave him and seek a better life.
But for some reason, at this moment, looking at Qiao Yan in front of me, I feel not an ounce of love. Instead, there is a natural instinct to reject him.
Perhaps it is because... I am too afraid of him.
"I understand," I said, taking a step back to create distance between myself and Qiao Yan, and I added softly, "I will think it over carefully."
Qiao Yan looked at me and smiled slightly.
"I will wait for your good news."
