I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down, and managed to squeeze out a smile. "You don't need to explain; I understand what you mean."
Wang Mei was taken aback for a moment, seemingly surprised by my reaction. She cautiously asked, "Auntie, are you... are you okay?"
I turned around and walked over to the coffee table, picking up the cup of water. "I'm fine; what could possibly be wrong with me?" I forced a light laugh. "I've known about Li Kai's remarriage for a long time, and I wish you both well."
"Really?" Wang Mei's eyes lit up, and her face showed a look of delight.
I nodded, took a sip of water to mask the bitterness inside me. "Really, why would I joke about something like this?"
Wang Mei's smile grew even brighter as she walked over to me and affectionately linked her arm with mine. "Auntie, you're so wonderful! Don't worry; I will definitely take good care of Li Kai and the kids from now on!"
I smiled but said nothing, just gently patted her hand.
Wang Mei seemed very happy and began to talk to me about her relationship with Li Kai—how they met, what hobbies he had, and so on. I listened while responding half-heartedly, but inside I felt increasingly uneasy.
"Auntie, do you know what dishes Li Kai likes?" Wang Mei suddenly asked.
I set down the cup of water and looked at her. "Why do you ask that all of a sudden?"
"Well, I'm going to marry him, right?" Wang Mei said with a hint of shyness in her smile. "I’ll definitely need to cook for him in the future, so I want to learn more about his preferences."
I nodded, "He is not picky about food and eats everything, but..." I paused, "he prefers spicy food, especially Sichuan cuisine."
"Really?" Wang Mei's eyes lit up. "I also love spicy food! It seems that Li Kai and I have quite a connection!"
I smiled but remained silent, feeling a twinge of bitterness inside. Yes, of course, you two have a connection—one young and beautiful, the other successful in his career. And what about me? Just an aging woman with a tired face.
"Auntie," Wang Mei asked again, "what about Zeze? What does he like to eat? Does he have any habits?"
"Zeze..." I rubbed my chin. "He likes sweets and doesn't care much for vegetables. He likes to cuddle with stuffed toys when he sleeps..."
As I spoke, I observed Wang Mei's expression. She listened intently, nodding occasionally as if trying to memorize everything I said.
Seeing her serious demeanor filled me with a sense of satisfaction. I wanted her to know that I, this "aunt," was not easily replaceable. I knew Li Kai and the child inside out; no one understood them better than I did!
Wang Mei finished listening and showed an expression of admiration. "Auntie, you are so good to Li Kai and Zeze, always thinking of them." She paused and then asked somewhat shyly, "By the way, Auntie, I heard from Li Kai that his company is going public soon?"
My heart skipped a beat as I calmly asked, "Oh? Is that so? He hasn't mentioned it to me."
Wang Mei shook her head. "I heard it from his colleagues too; I'm not really sure about the details. But I heard something about issuing stocks or something like that. Do you understand this?" As she spoke, a glint of mischief flashed in her eyes.
