Wang Mei stood at my doorstep holding a lobster, greeting me with a sweet smile, "Auntie, I came to see Li Kai." I discreetly assessed the young girl before me, fully aware that she was definitely not just the distant relative Li Kai had mentioned.
Suppressing my inner bitterness, I feigned calmness and stepped aside to let her in, "Come in."
Wang Mei seemed oblivious to my unease, continuing to chat cheerfully, "Auntie, your home is really beautiful and so tidy." She glanced around the living room, her tone laced with admiration.
I managed a forced smile and didn’t respond. Wang Mei walked over to the fish tank, watching the goldfish swim around, then turned to ask me, "Auntie, are these yours? You take care of them so well!"
"Yes, they are Li Ze's favorites; I just keep them casually," I replied lightly, but my gaze involuntarily fell on her. She was wearing a white dress today, looking particularly pure and lovely, with her long black hair casually draped over her shoulders, which accentuated her fair skin.
"Li Ze?" Wang Mei blinked in confusion.
"My son; his nickname is Zeze," I explained.
"Oh, Auntie, your son is already this big? I really can't tell," Wang Mei said with a sudden realization and then smiled again.
I tugged at the corners of my mouth without speaking. Can’t tell? Does that mean I look old?
"Auntie, please don’t call me Wang Mei; it sounds too formal. Just call me Xiao Mei," she suddenly said.
I was taken aback for a moment but looking into her sincere eyes, I eventually nodded, "Alright."
Wang Mei smiled happily and continued, "Auntie, I've known Li Kai for several years. He often talks about you, saying you are particularly capable and manage the household very well. He is especially grateful to you."
I tightened my grip on the cup, feeling a mix of emotions swirling inside me, hard to describe. Words like "capable" and "virtuous" sounded so harsh now.
"Auntie, it must be tough for you to raise a child alone," Wang Mei's voice pulled me back from my thoughts. Her gaze was filled with sympathy and understanding.
I forced a smile, about to say something when Wang Mei suddenly added, "Actually, Li Kai and I plan to get married soon. Then you won't have to struggle so much."
"Married?" The cup slipped from my hand and shattered on the floor, splashing water onto my pants.
Wang Mei was startled by my reaction and quickly grabbed a tissue from the coffee table, handing it to me. "Auntie, are you okay?"
I took the tissue, wiping my hands absentmindedly, then looked up at her with a trembling voice. "What… what did you just say? You and Li Kai are getting married?"
Wang Mei paused for a moment, then realized she had misspoken. She hurriedly explained, "Auntie, I didn't mean it like that. I—"
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. "You don't need to explain; I understand what you mean."
I stood up and walked to the window, gazing out at the bustling street below, feeling lost inside.
Wang Mei's words pierced my heart like a sharp knife. Yes, I should have seen this coming. Li Kai bringing her home could never be just a simple family relationship. It was me who had been deceiving myself, unwilling to accept the truth.
I turned around to look at Wang Mei, who stood there looking helpless, and suddenly found it somewhat amusing. What was I doing? Getting upset with a young girl?
