After class, Li Xiaoxing went to the bathroom to take a shower, while Wang Yueming sat on the sofa in the living room to rest.
Just as he settled down, he suddenly heard Li Xiaoxing calling him: "Teacher!"
Wang Yueming quickly stood up and walked to the bathroom door. "What’s wrong?"
"Teacher," Li Xiaoxing said, "my eyes feel uncomfortable. Can you help me get my eye drops?"
"Sure," Wang Yueming replied. "Do you have eye drops at home?"
"Yes," Li Xiaoxing said, "they're in the drawer under the TV."
"Okay," Wang Yueming said, "I'll go get them for you."
Wang Yueming walked to the TV, opened the drawer, and indeed found a bottle of eye drops. He took it out, turned around, and suddenly saw Li Ruyue standing at the living room door.
"Teacher Zhang," Li Ruyue looked at him and said, "hello."
"Hello," Wang Yueming replied. "You are..."
"I am Li Xiaoxing's sister," Li Ruyue said. "Let me take it to him."
"No need," Wang Yueming said. "I'll take it myself."
"Alright then," Li Ruyue said. "I'll head back."
"Mm."
Wang Yueming watched her leave, feeling an inexplicable sensation in his heart. She hadn't called him "Teacher Wang," but rather "Teacher Zhang." Did she recognize him?
Wang Yueming gazed at her figure until she disappeared from sight before turning back to enter the bathroom. He handed the eye drops to Li Xiaoxing: "Here."
"Thank you, teacher."
"You're welcome."
Wang Yueming looked at Li Xiaoxing and suddenly thought of the woman from earlier. Could it be her?
After leaving Li Xiaoxing's home, Wang Yueming was deep in thought.
He took out his phone and called Zhang Kai.
"Hello?" Zhang Kai answered the call.
"Wang Yueming," he asked, "what's the name of that child you mentioned before?"
"Which child?"
"The one you asked me to teach."
"Oh," Zhang Kai thought for a moment, "his name is Li Xiaoxing."
"Li Xiaoxing..." Wang Yueming murmured to himself.
"What's wrong?" Zhang Kai asked.
"Nothing," Wang Yueming replied, "I was just asking."
"Oh."
"How's your eye?"
"Much better," Zhang Kai said, "I should be able to have the bandages removed in a couple of days."
"That's good."
"Yeah," Zhang Kai said, "I'll hang up now."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Wang Yueming continued walking forward.
He recalled the woman from earlier; she looked somewhat familiar, but he couldn't remember where he had seen her before.
And then there was Li Ruyue; she hadn't called him "Teacher Wang," but instead referred to him as "Teacher Zhang."
Did she recognize him?
Wang Yueming thought, feeling a wave of panic.
He hoped she hadn't recognized him, yet at the same time wished she had.
This conflicting emotion left him feeling lost.
As he walked, he suddenly spotted an eyewear store ahead.
He thought for a moment and walked in.
"Welcome," the clerk said politely, "How can I assist you today?"
"I would like to get a pair of glasses," Wang Yueming said, "Could you recommend something for me?"
"Of course," the clerk replied, "What kind of frame do you prefer?"
Wang Yueming looked around: "Do you have any black-framed glasses?"
"Yes, we do," the clerk said, "Please hold on a moment."
——
The next day after class, Wang Yueming went to the library to read.
He saw a book titled "To Live" by Yu Hua.
He remembered seeing that same book at Li Xiaoxing's house yesterday, so he took it down and opened it.
As he flipped through the pages, he suddenly saw a line written inside—
To Li Ruyue, wishing her a speedy recovery.
Li Ruyue.
It was indeed her book.
Wang Yueming closed the book and put it back in its place.
He walked out of the library, feeling a wave of discomfort in his heart.
He wanted to see her; he desperately wanted to see her.
But he didn't dare to.
He was afraid that if he saw her, she would question him about why he left her.
He was afraid that if he saw her, he wouldn't be able to resist hugging her.
He was even more afraid that if he saw her, she would say they shouldn't have met.
He was scared, so he could only run away.
