In mid-June, after the college entrance examination ended, Li Ruyue and her father had just arrived home when the bedroom door was suddenly flung open.
“Mom, I don’t want to go to tutoring classes!”
Li Xiaoxing cried as he rushed out of the bedroom, grabbing Mother Li ’s clothing and complaining, “You actually want me to attend classes for forty-five days!”
Mother Li was in the kitchen organizing ingredients. Upon hearing this, she turned around with a spatula that had water on it, smiling, “Sweetheart, you ranked fortieth in your class in this final exam. I’m very proud of you.”
Li Xiaoxing’s face scrunched up in displeasure as he turned to look at Li Ruyue, his eyes filled with pleading.
Before Li Ruyue could say anything, her father interrupted, “Stop whining. Your sister isn’t feeling well; don’t bother her.”
With that one sentence, Li Xiaoxing lowered his head again and reluctantly returned to his bedroom.
Li Ruyue watched her brother's retreating figure and let out a gentle sigh.
Two years ago, due to a traffic accident, Li Ruyue suffered damage to her left eye and has been dealing with health issues ever since, often falling ill and needing to rest at home. This was also the reason she had to leave high school early due to her illness.
That day when she had just returned home and was resting in bed, she overheard her parents discussing something downstairs.
“...How about we hire a tutor?” It was her mother’s voice.
“A tutor?” Father Li replied with confusion.
“Yes, since Xiaoyue is sick, we can’t have her teach Xiaoxing.”
Li Ruyue was leaning against the headboard at that moment, blinking as she listened to their conversation from downstairs. Her mother made a valid point; Li Xiaoxing’s grades weren’t particularly good, and the education level in Jiangcheng where they lived certainly couldn’t compare to that of the capital.
After thinking for a moment, Father Li said, “Alright then, let’s find a tutor.”
Li Ruyue considered it as well and supported the idea: “Yes, let’s find a tutor.”
Father Li and Mother Li quickly found a tutor for Li Xiaoxing and devised a study plan for him: mathematics, English, and writing.
Watching Li Xiaoxing’s distressed little face every day made Li Ruyue feel a bit heartbroken, but she held back her feelings. The tutor's surname was Zhang; he was a college student who wore glasses and appeared refined and handsome.
On the first day of tutoring, Teacher Zhang gave Li Xiaoxing two math lessons. Li Ruyue was resting in her room, listening to the occasional laughter coming from the living room, realizing that the tutoring sessions were not boring for him at all.
Li Ruyue was a bit surprised; she thought Li Xiaoxing would dislike such tutoring classes, but it seemed that Teacher Zhang had some skills after all. Listening to Li Xiaoxing's laughter made her unable to help but smile slightly.
After two days of tutoring, Li Ruyue felt a bit bored. After thinking for a moment, she took her phone and went to the living room.
Li Xiaoxing and the tutor were sitting on the sofa in the living room. When Li Ruyue came out of her bedroom, both of them turned to look at her.
Li Ruyue smiled and said, "You two continue."
Li Xiaoxing nodded and went back to listening to the lesson.
Li Ruyue sat down on a nearby armchair and started watching videos on her phone. The volume of the video was a bit loud, and as she listened, she suddenly heard Teacher Zhang mention a name: Wang Yueming.
This name startled Li Ruyue; she instinctively looked up at Teacher Zhang.
Teacher Zhang noticed Li Ruyue's gaze and smiled awkwardly, saying, "Sorry for disturbing you."
Li Xiaoxing quickly shook his head, "No, no, please continue, teacher."
Teacher Zhang nodded and resumed his lesson.
However, Li Ruyue felt somewhat distracted; she looked at Teacher Zhang's face while a name kept surfacing in her mind—Wang Yueming. It had been a long time since anyone had mentioned that name, long enough for Li Ruyue to almost forget it.
