After returning from out of town, I told Fu Bo about Fu Qingqing. I wanted to learn more from him. However, Fu Bo was not familiar with Fu Qingqing; he had left home at a young age for his studies and was not interested in family gossip. The only person he cared about was me.
After listening to my account, Fu Bo pondered for a moment. "She lived in the Fu Residence until she got married and moved out." His brows furrowed slightly, as if he were deep in thought. "I think you could ask the old nanny in the manor," Fu Bo suggested. "She might know some old stories."
A light bulb went off in my head—how did I not think of that! I immediately sought out an old nanny in the manor who had served at the Fu Residence for many years and was very familiar with the affairs of the Fu family.
Through the old nanny's recounting, I finally learned about the hidden past of the Fu family. It turned out that Fu Qingqing's original surname was Chen. Her father was a trusted aide of Old Master Fu and died while trying to save him during an accident. In gratitude for his life-saving act, Old Master Fu took Jiang Qingqing and her mother into the manor, providing them with great care and support.
Old Master Fu even held a grand ceremony to change Jiang Qingqing's surname to Fu, officially including her in the Fu family genealogy and treating her as if she were his own daughter. Thus, Jiang Qingqing transformed from an orphan into the most favored youngest daughter of the Fu family.
However, Fu Guanbai harbored resentment towards Jiang Qingqing's arrival. He felt that she and her mother had taken away his position in the family and their parents' affection. Consequently, he was not friendly towards Jiang Qingqing and even displayed some hostility.
Yet, Jiang Qingqing was well aware of everything; she knew she was living under someone else's roof and had to win over Fu Guanbai. So, she began her efforts to please him.
Fu Guanbai liked sweets, so Jiang Qingqing prepared exquisite snacks for him every day. Although they were mostly rejected, she remained undeterred. He had diverse interests—enjoying reading, writing, and studying medicine—so Jiang Qingqing worked hard to learn these subjects, even pretending to be very interested despite not understanding much, hoping to find common ground with Fu Guanbai.
Over time, after prolonged interactions, Fu Guanbai's attitude towards Jiang Qingqing gradually softened. He no longer rejected her as he initially did and occasionally showed concern for her well-being.
Jiang Qingqing's efforts were not in vain; she finally won the trust and affection of Fu Guanbai.
From the old maid's words, I sensed something different.
I thought for a moment and asked, "Maid, do you think Father-in-law has romantic feelings for Fu Qingqing?"
The old maid shook her head. "I can't say for sure, but I can tell that the master really likes Miss Qingqing. When he is with his wife, he often mentions Miss Qingqing, and every time he does, he smiles."
My heart sank.
It seemed that the relationship between Fu Qingqing and Fu Guanbai was indeed complicated.

I bid farewell to the old maid and walked back to the courtyard alone.

I opened my mouth to say more but ultimately swallowed my words.
I knew my mother-in-law was kind-hearted and innocent; she would never suspect her own family.
But I couldn't just stand by and do nothing.
I had to find evidence to prove that Fu Qingqing had ulterior motives towards Father-in-law; only then could I protect my mother-in-law from harm.
