A crisp sound echoed as the tray was set down, filling the entire room with a clear ringing noise.
"Apologies..."
The old man continued to mutter words that made Xia Xiaoyu feel uneasy. Meanwhile, his hand slowly reached out towards her, those dry and bony fingers sending a chill down her spine.
"Ah..."
Before the hand could fully extend, the old woman suddenly let out a shriek. At the moment her hand brushed against Xia Xiaoyu's body, a bright light erupted from her.
Xia Xiaoyu was startled as well; she reached into her pocket and surprisingly pulled out a talisman inscribed with a strange character.
How did this thing end up on me?
Xia Xiaoyu was equally astonished. This item was quite common on the streets, but the character inscribed on it seemed almost alive, with a faint golden light swirling within its strokes, emitting a weak glow. Yet it was this very light that kept the old people and the Big Man at bay.
"It must be that guy Zifeng's doing..."
Xia Xiaoyu thought to herself. Indeed, apart from him, no one else had such abilities.
Xia Xiaoyu felt a bit fired up, realizing she couldn't keep up with another aspect.
Holding a Talisman in one hand, she faced several Evil Spirits that dared not move recklessly. With her other hand, she tried to check her right pocket, but unfortunately, it turned out that this was the only one she had.
Damn it...
Xia Xiaoyu cursed inwardly, wondering why he hadn't given her this thing earlier. Or at least given her a few more...
With this thing, what was there to be afraid of? Seriously...
Suddenly, Xia Xiaoyu recalled the first time she went to Zifeng's house and his remark about going out to buy groceries for dinner.
"Sure enough, he's so stingy..."
Xia Xiaoyu had to admit that Zifeng was indeed quite miserly.
"Don't come any closer..."
Seeing the fierce Big Man trying to approach, Xia Xiaoyu suddenly shouted and pushed the Talisman forward. In an instant, a strong light erupted from the Talisman, forcefully repelling the approaching Evil Spirit.
Although she was terrified at that moment, Xia Xiaoyu felt a bit proud inside.
Damn it, here she was fighting against a few ghosts? And holding her own against three? If only she had thought to bring a camera to capture such a spectacular scene; it would have made for great bragging rights later.
Hmm, this idea is not bad.
Of course, it sounds impressive, but being in the situation, Xia Xiaoyu still felt an overwhelming fear.
First, she picked up the phone from the ground. Looking at the few Evil Spirits around, she didn’t dare to act recklessly. She knew it was not safe to stay here for long, so she tried her best to control her trembling body and slowly approached the door. Then she opened the doorknob...
"Hmph..."
Xia Xiaoyu slowly opened the door, letting out a smug little hum.
With the Talisman in hand, Xia Xiaoyu felt much braver. She had already opened the door and glanced into the pitch-black night. It had been so long, yet Xu Qian still hadn’t arrived; she probably wasn’t planning to come after all.
The entire lonely manor was shrouded in darkness, surrounded by pitch-blackness. However, in the distance, Xia Xiaoyu faintly saw lights coming from the city... that was where she had come from.
Suddenly, Xia Xiaoyu felt a warmth in her hand that gradually became very hot. She turned around and felt a chill run down her spine because the Talisman in her hand had caught fire; it was actually burning.
Xia Xiaoyu quickly threw away the Talisman, but then another thought crossed her mind.
Slowly raising her head, she saw three ghastly green faces staring at her with horror, making her feel as if all the blood in her body had frozen.
