Xia Xiaoyu looked up and heard what seemed to be the sound of a car starting in the distant mountains. Before long, the car drove closer.
“Driver, stop! Please stop!”
Ignoring the danger, Xia Xiaoyu ran into the middle of the road, waving her arms and shouting.
“Are you trying to get yourself killed?”
A deep voice suddenly came from the car, followed by a low curse.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Xia Xiaoyu quickly shifted her position. The headlights were so close that even though they weren't far away, they still made it hard for her to open her eyes.
“What are you doing out here in the middle of the night, kid?”
As she stepped aside, she finally saw a slightly older Big Man, who spoke with a loud and careless tone.
“I’m sorry, I got lost,” Xia Xiaoyu said softly.
"Where are you going?"
"Qingshui Village..."
"Celestial Maiden, that place is up in the northern mountains. How did you end up across from Honghu Bay?" The Big Man glanced at Xia Xiaoyu and then paused before speaking.
"I don't know the way..."
Xia Xiaoyu realized it was her fault, and her voice became much quieter.
The Big Man thought for a moment before saying, "Well, I'm heading there too. You're from the city, right? The road is bumpy and the vehicle isn't great. If you can manage, just hop in."
At this point, Xia Xiaoyu had lost all sense of caution. She really wanted to go back, but looking at the fierce-looking Big Man, she feared that if she insisted on asking him to take her away, he might just leave her behind. However, thinking about how dark it was in the mountains and that it was about to rain, she agreed.
This vehicle was something Xia Xiaoyu had never ridden in before; it was a rundown little truck used for transporting bricks on rural dirt roads. But given the circumstances, she had no other choice. She climbed into the truck with difficulty and sat on the metal backseat, feeling quite uncomfortable.
The man adjusted the steering wheel and started the engine, which roared to life with a loud rumble. Xia Xiaoyu felt a bit uneasy.
Inside the truck, without a roof and with light rain beginning to fall, the mountain wind blew in. Xia Xiaoyu felt cold all over, and her legs ached from being scratched by branches while walking through the forest earlier. Initially filled with fear, she hadn't noticed any discomfort in her body, but now that she was starting to relax, she felt a strange warmth spreading throughout her.
She took a deep breath against the wind and immediately sensed a nauseating smell in the air.
"What is that smell?"
Xia Xiaoyu had to raise her voice a bit to drown out the rumbling sound of the engine.
"This is grass juice from the mountains. With this stuff, mosquitoes won't come near. It's much more effective than the mosquito coils in the city."
Xia Xiaoyu nodded, but there was still a lingering foul smell in the vehicle that made her feel like she couldn't stay inside for another moment.
It was hard to tell if the car was moving quickly or if it was just the absence of mosquito bites, but soon enough, the vehicle began to descend a slope, and the hillside became gentler. Before long, they drove into a Solitary Manor.
It was a small village. The noise of the car was still loud, but an uneasy feeling rose in Xia Xiaoyu's heart. The village was eerily quiet; she didn't see a single person. Finally, the car stopped in front of a single-story house.
The entire village seemed to be illuminated only by the faint light from this house. Big Man turned off the engine, and both he and Xia Xiaoyu got out of the car. Through the glass, Xia Xiaoyu could see that it seemed like the people inside were already asleep.
"Uncle Wang, open the door!"
The man shouted.
Uncle Wang? Did this family also have the surname Wang, or was everyone in this village named Wang?
