"Calming Incense?"
"Wig?"
Chen Gang sneered, "Li Ling, you really play the part well."
He turned on the light and slammed the Calming Incense and Wig in front of me.
He grabbed my hair and dragged me to the ground, saying, "Li Ling, you're pretending to be mysterious, trying to scare my mom on purpose, looking for a chance to escape, right?"
I protested, "The Calming Incense is unique to my hometown; I brought it specifically to help Grandma sleep."
"The Wig was meant to be a surprise for you, but I didn't expect you to find out."
"How could I harm you?"
Chen Gang yanked my hair harder and slammed my head against the ground. "Li Ling, do you think I would believe that? You're acting; you're really good at it!"
I shook my head desperately. "Chen Gang, I really didn't..."
With a loud bang, the light went out.
A woman's crying echoed in the yard.
The sound was mournful and filled with sorrow.
Chen Gang grabbed my collar and lifted me up.
He took a wooden stick and dragged me outside.
"Where is that sound coming from?"
I trembled in fear. "I don't know..."
Chen Gang sneered again. "Don't know? Isn't that sound coming from you?"
"Li Ling, you're really good at pretending."
I trembled as I pointed toward Grandma's room. "The... the sound is coming from there..."
Chen Gang stared at Grandma's room with a dark expression.
He pulled me along to the door of Grandma's room.
He suddenly pushed the door open and charged in with the wooden stick raised.
In the moonlight, I saw Grandma standing in the corner with disheveled hair, holding a small bundle wrapped in a blanket that looked like a "baby."
Chen Gang raised his stick and shouted angrily, "What are you holding?"
Grandma flinched and replied tremulously, "Chen Gang, I just gave birth... it's a girl, but she's too weak; she might not sell for a good price..."
Chen Gang swung the stick and knocked the "baby" from Grandma's arms onto the ground.
It turned out to be a dead cat.
The cat's body was small, as if it had just been born.
Its body was already stiff and covered in blood.
The stick struck the cat's corpse, bursting its belly and spilling intestines and blood everywhere.
Chen Gang roared, "Is this what you call a baby?"
Seeing the dead cat on the ground, Grandma panicked. "How could that be... I was just holding a girl..."
She touched her face and found a deep wound; blood was flowing continuously from it.
She let out a shriek, "My face! My face!"
When she saw me standing at the door, her eyes widened in terror: "A ghost... there's a ghost..."
She crouched on the ground, curling up in fear, "Don't come over... don't come over..." Chen Gang pulled me into the house and kicked my calf, forcing me to kneel on the floor. Pain flooded my eyes with tears. Chen Gang grabbed my hair and dragged me inside. He kicked me down, making me kneel.
Grandma huddled on the ground, trembling. Blood continuously oozed from the wounds on her face, staining it red. She murmured, "There's a ghost... there's a ghost..." Chen Gang pressed down on my shoulder and said, "Mom, it was just Li Ling playing tricks; those are all illusions." He pointed at the dead cat on the floor, "Look, is this your daughter? It's just a cat."
Grandma trembled as she looked at the dead cat, "No... it's not an illusion..." "I never used Calming Incense; all of this is real..." She looked at me in terror, "Li Ling, are you human or a ghost..." I knelt on the ground and said tremulously, "Chen Gang, when I was young, I was suspected of being possessed by a ghost. A fortune teller said I have Spiritual Mediumship; I can see ghosts and help Grandma find Xiao Xuan's spirit."
Chapter Six: Dark Night Pursuit
Chen Gang didn't believe me: "Li Ling, what trick are you trying to pull?" Tears streamed down my face: "I'm not lying to you; I know Grandma is haunted by Xiao Xuan's spirit. I want to help you." "I have a relative who came back to find me after he died. After I sent him away, he was reborn." "As long as the deceased possesses me and fulfills their wishes, they will let us go."
Chen Gang sneered, "What if their wish is for the deceased to die?" I replied, "That's impossible; the deceased cannot decide the fate of the living." Chen Gang stared at me for a long time without saying a word. Suddenly, Grandma stood up. She knelt before me and bowed her head several times forcefully.
She raised her head, her face covered in blood: "Li Ling, I know you're special. If Xiao Xuan's spirit really comes, I'll bear all the sins; please spare my son." A hint of emotion appeared in Chen Gang's eyes. He helped Grandma up: "Mom, don't do this; I believe Li Ling will help you find Xiao Xuan's spirit." He turned to me: "Li Ling, what do we need to do?"
The three of us sat around the tea table in the west room. I picked up a bracelet and placed it on the table: "You each need to drop a drop of blood on this bracelet and then close your eyes while waiting for Xiao Xuan's spirit to appear." Chen Gang followed my instructions, biting his finger and letting a drop of blood fall onto the bracelet. Grandma bit her finger as well and dropped a drop of blood. They both closed their eyes while sitting around the tea table.
I lowered my voice: "No matter what happens, you must not open your eyes." "If you lie, the resentment of the deceased will grow stronger; I don't know what will happen then." At 3:04 AM, we three sat around the tea table.
I kept looking at my watch.
The time was almost up.
I whispered, "Xiao Xuan is coming."
I imitated Xiao Xuan's voice, "Mom Chen, why did you want to kill me?"
Grandma trembled all over, "Xiao Xuan, I didn't mean to... please don't blame me..."
Chen Gang urged, "Mom, hurry and tell her you didn't mean to kill her."
Grandma said tremblingly, "Xiao Xuan, I just wanted Chen Gang to take a few pictures of you. I didn't expect you to run out and discover our secret..."

I asked, "Mom Chen, what is your secret?"
Grandma fell silent.
Her voice shook as she said, "Xiao Xuan, I didn't mean to kill you..."
"If you let me bury you properly and bring my daughter back, I will forgive you."
Grandma kept bowing her head repeatedly, "I will fulfill your last wish..."
With a loud click, the lights came on.
Chen Gang stood by the switch, staring coldly at me: "Li Ling, you really are pretending to be a ghost."
He quickly walked up to me, grabbed my hair, and slammed me down onto the ground:
"Damn it, you're not a Spiritual Medium; you're just using this trick to make us admit it."
He picked up a stick and struck my stomach hard. Grandma rushed over and grabbed my clothes.
I turned around and pushed Grandma down, gripping her collar tightly and slapping her face repeatedly.
Chen Gang rushed in front of me and kicked me down to the ground.
Just as I was about to struggle, Chen Gang was already on top of me.
He tightly squeezed my neck: "Li Ling, do you want to die?"
I found it increasingly difficult to breathe, my face turning red.
At that critical moment, a woman's crying could be heard from outside the door.
