The next morning, my mother-in-law made me a bowl of pigeon soup.
I took a sip and felt something nail-like in the soup.
I chewed on it and nearly spat it out.
Suppressing my nausea, I asked my mother-in-law, "Mom, what is this in the soup?"
She smiled and said, "This is a good thing; it's good for your health and will help your future baby be smart."
I frowned and pushed the bowl aside. "I don't like this. I don't want to eat nutritious meals anymore."
Her expression darkened. "How can you not eat? You're having a boy now, so you need to eat well. Don't worry, I'll make it for you every day."
A shiver ran down my spine.
Her words reminded me of what happened last night.
I needed to tell Chen Gang quickly; his mother had issues.
That evening, I finally found an opportunity to tell Chen Gang about what happened during the day.
However, his mother was right next to us, making it impossible for me to speak up.
At ten o'clock at night, Chen Gang said a friend called him out for drinks.
I frowned, feeling a bit wronged. "You just got back and now you're leaving? I'm bored at home alone."
Chen Gang patted my shoulder. "I have work to do; you have your mom to take care of you at home, so I’m not worried."
I lowered my eyes to hide the hatred in them from Chen Gang.
After he left, I opened his phone and checked the call log.
At three in the morning, he called his mother.
I covered my mouth to stifle a gasp.
Sure enough, his mother was in on it with him.
So, was the woman who was "dealt with" earlier Xiao Xuan?
My heart raced as tears streamed down uncontrollably.
Xiao Xuan was my best friend; she disappeared shortly after getting together with Chen Gang.
Looking back now, the encounter between Chen Gang and Xiao Xuan was not a coincidence. Perhaps Xiao Xuan had already met with misfortune. I wiped my tears and told myself to stay calm. The most important thing now was to escape from here quickly.
I got up, intending to return to my room to pack my things, when suddenly the front door of the living room swung open. Chen Gang stood at the doorway with a sullen expression, his gaze sharp as a knife.
"What were you doing just now?" he asked.
"I..." I was momentarily speechless, unsure of how to respond. Chen Gang stepped closer, his tall figure looming over me. "Did you touch my phone?"
I forced myself to appear calm and replied loudly, "What? Can't I touch your phone?"
"Are you hiding something from me? Is that why you're afraid for me to see your phone?"
I held my head high, pretending to be angry. In truth, I was terrified inside. I feared that Chen Gang would discover that I already knew his secret, and I was afraid he would treat me the same way he treated Xiao Xuan.
Chen Gang paused for a moment before suddenly laughing. "What secrets could I possibly have? I'm just busy with work and don't have much time to spend with you. Don't worry, my mom will take good care of you."
I let out a sigh of relief. Thankfully, he didn't suspect me. Chen Gang seemed exhausted and went to sleep after taking a shower.
That night, while my mother-in-law went to the bathroom, I quietly slipped out. I ran desperately, trying to escape this place. However, when I reached a muddy path, a tricycle came barreling toward me and knocked me down. Everything went black before my eyes, and I lost consciousness.
I woke up again, and I was back in the room. Chen Gang was sitting by the bed, and his grandmother stood behind him, both looking at me with concern.
Seeing that I was awake, Chen Gang took my hand and said, "Xiao Ling, you finally woke up. You scared me to death."
His grandmother leaned in closer and asked, "Xiao Ling, how do you feel? Does your stomach hurt?"
I touched my belly and found it still felt swollen.
"Is the baby okay?"
Chen Gang smiled and replied, "The baby is fine. Fortunately, a team of doctors passed by and took you to the hospital."
