This is a new pharmaceutical research laboratory.
The laboratory is stained with blood, and the stench of decaying dead rabbits fills every corner of the lab.
Three young men in white lab coats, wearing medical caps, masks, and rubber gloves, are inside the laboratory. They are conducting experiments on a new drug codenamed "Biological." The three of them are partners in this new project. Standing at the testing table is Zhou Junsheng, a pharmacist who has returned from studying in the UK. On either side of him are local warlord Zhang Zhaolin and Tao Gongjin, who is in the pharmaceutical business.
Zhou Junsheng carefully drips a drop of the agent into a test tube that already contains other agents and then gently shakes it. He takes a syringe handed to him by Tao Gongjin, holding the test tube in one hand while drawing the solution into the syringe. He places the empty test tube on an iron rack, removes any air bubbles from the syringe, then walks around the testing table to retrieve a rabbit from a cage filled with several white rabbits. He gently inserts the needle of the syringe into the muscle of the rabbit's hind leg and slowly injects the solution into its body. Afterward, he places the rabbit into another empty cage. The three partners gather around to observe.
At first, the rabbit shows no signs of distress, but gradually it begins to shake and then starts frantically bumping around in its cage. Soon, it exhausts itself and collapses, blood seeping from its orifices.
"This still isn't working!" Zhang Zhaolin clearly shows his impatience.
At that moment, Tao Gongjin suddenly has a radical idea.
"What if we conduct human trials directly?"
"We could find one or two people to try it out!"
"No way!" Zhou Junsheng firmly rejects Tao Gongjin and Zhang Zhaolin's suggestion as he removes his mask. "Starting human trials now is tantamount to taking lives!"
"We have been fighting for this project for three years! Three years, and we haven't achieved anything!"
Zhang Zhaolin shouts angrily, clearly losing patience with the experiment.
Zhou Junsheng hesitates as he slowly walks to the workbench, supporting himself with his hands. After pondering for a long time, he finally makes up his mind: "It's time to shut down this laboratory!"
"What?" Zhang Zhaolin exclaims in shock. "You want to shut it down?"
“Zhou Junsheng, if we shut it down, all our efforts over the past three years will be wasted!” Tao Gongjin also expressed surprise and confusion.
Zhou Junsheng turned around, looking at the unwilling expressions on Zhang Zhaolin and Tao Gongjin's faces, which further solidified his resolve.
“Exactly! We should shut it down tonight! Right now! Our technology and capabilities are still lacking. If we continue like this, we will only end up harming more lives and wasting more resources!”
With that, Zhou Junsheng pushed through the space between Tao Gongjin and Zhang Zhaolin, directly walking to the laboratory's main door and forcefully pulling it open. Outside was a raging storm with thunder and lightning. The moment the door swung open, a flash of lightning struck, accompanied by a gust of wind that nearly knocked Zhou Junsheng, Tao Gongjin, and Zhang Zhaolin off their feet.
“I am sealing it up tonight!” Zhou Junsheng stood in the storm, righteous and resolute. “Unless our abilities improve, no one can reopen this project!”
This laboratory was located within the Qilin Pharmaceutical Factory, which Zhou Junsheng co-founded with his brother-in-law Cheng Shuping. After sending off Tao Gongjin and Zhang Zhaolin, that night he ordered his workers to brave the storm to lock all doors of the laboratory and put seals on them.
The rain that night was mixed with intense lightning and howling winds. Late into the night at Zhou Junsheng’s home, a flash of lightning illuminated several shadowy figures of masked thugs on the roof. These thugs hurriedly ran across the rooftop, causing tiles to rattle in alarm. Soon after, a servant in the courtyard shouted, “There are thieves!”
Zhou Junsheng grabbed a handgun and opened the study door to investigate. His wife Cheng Shuhua also emerged from their room wielding a long knife. Many servants armed with sticks and shovels came out from various rooms.
Amidst the sound of pouring rain, everyone looked around anxiously. Suddenly another flash of lightning illuminated a thug leaping down from the roof with a knife, followed by several servants being injured by the thugs.
The leader of the thugs commanded his subordinates: “Find them!”
“Yes!” The assassins responded as they scattered around the courtyard.
Servants armed with shovels, brooms, and sticks rushed forward to intercept them but were quickly taken down one by one by the thugs. Seeing this, Cheng Shuhua dashed towards the thugs while drawing her long knife; with swift strikes, she brought down two or three black-clad attackers. The remaining thugs turned back defensively.
“Don’t get caught up in fighting; completing the mission is what matters!” The leader of the black-clad thugs ordered. Except for those engaged with Cheng Shuhua, the rest of the thugs followed their leader as they kicked open door after door. They were getting closer to the east wing room.
Cheng Shuhua shouted, "Zhou Junsheng, protect our daughter!"
Zhou Junsheng fired his gun at the thugs, emptying the magazine, hitting only one thug. As he reloaded, he ran towards the east wing.
Inside the east wing, two teenage girls were huddled by the window, terrified as they watched the chaos unfold in the courtyard. They were Zhou Junsheng's daughters, a pair of twin sisters dressed in matching outfits.
Suddenly, the door to the east wing was kicked open by the thug leader, rainwater pouring in and soaking the floor. The thug leader burst in with three thugs, causing the twin sisters to cling tightly to each other in fear.
Just as the thug leader ordered his men to take action against the twins, Zhou Junsheng appeared at the doorway, aiming his gun at the intruders.
"Don't move!" Zhou Junsheng, being a frail scholar, trembled as he spoke.
The thug leader sneered at Zhou Junsheng, easily snatching the gun away and smashing it against the wall before tossing it aside. He then kicked Zhou Junsheng out of the room.
"What are you all standing around for? Get to work!"
At his command, the three thugs advanced toward the twin sisters. The thug leader pulled out two syringes and a syringe holder from his waist. He filled one syringe and approached the screaming twins.
Two bodies of black-clad men fell into the room from outside just as Cheng Shuhua rushed into the east wing.
"Let go of my daughters!" Cheng Shuhua yelled as she charged forward. One thug blocking her path suddenly intercepted her. While Cheng Shuhua fought with this thug, two more thugs rushed in from outside. As she struggled with these three thugs, the thug leader had already inserted the needle of the syringe into one of the crying girls' shoulders and began injecting her with the drug. The two girls screamed desperately, but their bodies were firmly held by the thugs behind them, rendering them immobile.
In a frenzy to save her daughters, Cheng Shuhua fought fiercely, quickly dispatching the three thugs.
"Let them go!" Cheng Shuhua shouted again as she swung her knife directly at the thug leader. The thug leader hurriedly dodged while the two thugs restraining the twin sisters also quickly moved out of harm's way.
"Get behind me!" Cheng Shuhua said to her daughters.
The injected girl pulled the syringe still stuck in her shoulder out and threw it on the ground, hiding behind Cheng Shuhua along with another girl.
One of the thugs asked, "Boss, what should we do?"
"Retreat!" As soon as the thug leader finished speaking, he jumped out of the window with the two thugs. At that moment, Cheng Shuhua noticed a scar on the thug leader's forehead.
In the Zhou family's courtyard, the thug leader led both injured and uninjured thugs toward the main gate, while all the servants of the Zhou family hid in fear, watching them leave. Zhou Junsheng struggled to stand up, clutching his stomach, and walked into the east wing.
"Are the kids alright?" Zhou Junsheng asked his wife, Cheng Shuhua.
Cheng Shuhua replied anxiously, "Yuwan doesn't know what she was injected with."
Zhou Junsheng saw the shattered medicine vials and syringes. When he looked up at the injected girl, she was already showing signs of a drug reaction.
"Mom, I'm cold! Cold!"
Then, the girl began to tremble.
Zhou Junsheng's face turned pale. "Tie her to the bed! Hurry! Tie her to the bed!"
As he spoke, Zhou Junsheng rushed out of the east wing.
Just then, a flash of lightning struck, accompanied by a deafening thunderclap. Amidst the lightning, thunder, and rain, Zhou Junsheng shouted, "Zhang Shun! Zhang Shun!"
Butler Zhang Shun hurriedly ran out behind the servants.
"Drive, take me to the laboratory, quickly!"
The girl who was injected with the drug by the thug leader is named Zhou Yuwan, and her twin sister is Zhou Yuyao. They are the protagonists of our story.
Cheng Shuhua held the violently trembling Zhou Yuwan and placed her on a bed, instructing Yuyao to fetch a rope. Zhou Yuyao stood behind Cheng Shuhua, crying with her mouth open, "Mom, I'm scared!"
Cheng Shuhua held Zhou Yuyao's shoulders, saying, "Yuyao, don't be afraid! Hurry and get the rope, or your sister will be in danger!"
"Okay!"
Zhou Yuyao wiped her tears and ran out of the east wing.
Cheng Shuhua turned around and pressed down hard on Zhou Yuwan's shaking body. Zhou Yuwan began to vomit, foam spewing from her mouth.
"Yuwan, you have to hold on! Hold on!"
Cheng Shuhua couldn't bear to look directly at her and turned her face away, tears streaming down.
In the heavy rain, Zhang Shun drove the car at high speed.
Zhou Junsheng sat in the passenger seat, looking extremely anxious.
"Faster! Hurry!"

With a loud bang, the door to Zhou Junsheng's laboratory was flung open, and a beam of flashlight light was cast inside. Immediately, Zhou Junsheng and Zhang Shun rushed into the lab, drenched with rainwater. Zhou Junsheng headed straight for the shelves in the lab, pushing aside numerous bottles and jars, many of which fell and shattered on the floor. Finally, he spotted several bottles labeled "Antidote" and quickly stuffed them into a paper bag before hurriedly returning.
Meanwhile, Cheng Shuhua and Zhou Yuyao were tying Zhou Yuwan to the bed with ropes. Zhou Yuwan lay on her side, her face pale, continuously vomiting the contents of her stomach and gasping for air, her eyes beginning to roll back. The vomit flowed from her mouth down to the floor.
Zhou Yuyao cried in fear, "Mom, is my sister going to die?"
"No! She will hold on until your dad comes back! She will!" As she spoke, Cheng Shuhua tightly grasped Zhou Yuyao's hand, her tear-filled eyes scanning the window repeatedly.
The sound of a car approaching could be heard, followed by the sweep of headlights across the window.
"Dad is here! It must be Dad coming back!"
Zhou Yuyao exclaimed with joy, and Cheng Shuhua quickly ran to the door of the room. Just as she reached the door, Zhou Junsheng burst in from outside.
"Where are the kids?" Zhou Junsheng asked.
"In there!" Cheng Shuhua replied.
Upon seeing Zhou Yuwan, Zhou Junsheng rushed to her bedside, twisted open a glass vial in his hand, grabbed a syringe, and drew out the medication from the vial.
"Ten milliliters! Ten milliliters! Ten milliliters..." Zhou Junsheng muttered as he expelled the air from the syringe, ensuring that only ten milliliters of antidote remained inside. He then hurriedly injected the antidote into Zhou Yuwan's body. Cheng Shuhua and Zhou Yuyao stood by anxiously, waiting and observing Zhou Yuwan's reaction after the injection.
Zhou Yuwan's trembling gradually stopped, and she slowly ceased vomiting. Finally, Zhou Yuwan weakly closed her eyes.
Cheng Shuhua asked, "How is Yuwan?"
After taking Zhou Yuwan's pulse, Zhou Junsheng finally breathed a sigh of relief. "She’s okay now; it's under control for the moment."
Upon hearing this, Cheng Shuhua and Zhou Yuyao relaxed from their tense state.
Wiping her tears, Zhou Yuyao couldn't hide her joy. "So, my sister won't die?"
With tears of joy on her face, Cheng Shuhua embraced Zhou Yuyao. "The nightmare is over; it won't happen again! It will never happen again."
Zhou Junsheng sat wearily on the floor beside the bed. "This is all my fault—Yuwan was injected with a 'biological' toxin. Although the effects of the toxin are currently suppressed, this is only temporary. The 'biological' toxin cannot be completely expelled from the body, and she will experience relapses every half month. If we can't administer the antidote in time during one of those episodes, Yuwan will succumb to the poison."
Cheng Shuhua and Zhou Yuyao looked at Zhou Junsheng in shock. Zhou Junsheng gazed at the exhausted and unconscious Zhou Yuwan.
"It seems that someone doesn't want me to stop this project!"
