The Coach Jiang mentioned by Miao Chengmin seems to hold a very high status in the eyes of the students. The three followers immediately put away their fists and obediently stood aside without moving.
Ming Juan looked around in confusion, but soon shrank back behind Miao Chengmin, frightened by the surprised gazes from the crowd.
“Miao Chengmin, you are an upright child. Tell me, what happened?” Coach Jiang walked between Miao Chengmin and Wang Ruihu, glanced at Wang Ruihu, and then fixed his gaze on Miao Chengmin's eyes.
“Uh…” Miao Chengmin dodged for a moment but eventually met Coach Jiang's serious gaze again, pointing to Ming Juan behind him. “Young Master Wang wanted to help this new student with her luggage, but he…”
“I wanted to help. Is there a problem?” Wang Ruihu glared at Miao Chengmin with disdain, crossing his arms and tapping his toes on the ground.
“Helping is fine, but what do you mean by touching her?” Miao Chengmin retorted without holding back, deliberately raising his voice so that everyone around could hear clearly.
“Touch her?!”
“Oh my, Young Master Wang is too flirtatious!”
The crowd immediately erupted into chaos. Coach Jiang turned to look at Wang Ruihu, whose cheeks were already flushed with anxiety, and spoke again: “Alright, then I want to know, Wang Ruihu, why did you take action?”
Wang Ruihu let out a cold laugh and whistled.
One of Miao Chengmin's followers pulled out a voice recorder from his sleeve.
“Ah?!” Both Miao Chengmin and Ming Juan were taken aback by this turn of events. Miao Chengmin gritted his teeth tightly, veins bulging as he glared at Wang Ruihu.
“Someone like you… a spendthrift, can only use money to pave the way. If you have the ability, then speak with your fists!”
Once the recording finished playing, Wang Ruihu winked at Ming Juan as if he had won a victory and then said to Coach Jiang: “See? He wants to fight.”
“Are you really going to fight just because he said it casually?!” Coach Jiang questioned Wang Ruihu.
“Well, I have to fulfill his wish, right?”
Wang Ruihu's arrogant attitude immediately infuriated Coach Jiang. He shouted: “This is a university! It’s a public place! There are national laws and school rules here; it’s not your home!”
“Why do you think I can’t turn this place into something like my home?” Wang Ruihu lit a cigarette. “Let me put it this way: in this world, there’s nothing that Wang Ruihu can’t buy with money, and no one I can’t kick out with money!”
Everyone gasped in astonishment, completely in awe of Wang Ruihu's wealth.
“Do you see?” Wang Ruihu directly ignored Coach Jiang and pointed at Miao Chengmin. “Without money, there’s no priority whatsoever; there’s no reason for anyone to admire you!”
His casual remark made those nearby light up with excitement. Miao Chengmin finally realized how powerful the person he was dealing with was; Wang Ruihu could probably dismantle his family with just a snap of his fingers.
Even the usually strong-willed Miao Chengmin felt a bead of sweat forming inside as he faced someone like this.
Coach Jiang also understood Wang Ruihu's influence; the longer this situation dragged on, the more advantageous it would be for him.
He naturally wanted to protect Miao Chengmin. Moreover, continuing to argue would often favor those with money and power; rather than fighting until both sides were destroyed, it was better to de-escalate.
“Alright! Enough noise! As long as no one has thrown a punch, everything can be discussed! These kinds of frictions are minor issues; everyone should take a step back for their own good,” Coach Jiang said while signaling both sides to stop.
“Why should I let him off?” Just as those words were about to leave Wang Ruihu's lips, he suddenly changed his mind. If Ming Juan weren’t present, Miao Chengmin would have already been scolded mercilessly. While it was fine for Wang Ruihu to flaunt his wealth, it wouldn’t be good if others thought he was bullying Miao Chengmin; he still had to consider his family's reputation.
"Sure," Wang Ruihu said, "but Miss Ming, please allow me to guide you for your new student registration."
"Ah!" Several gold-digging girls nearby immediately cried out in a whiny tone.
"Uh..." Miao Chengmin turned to look at Ming Juan, who had her head down behind him.
It wasn't a big deal; as long as Ming Juan agreed, he wouldn't have to deal with this mess anymore and could perhaps enjoy a peaceful university life ahead. Besides, Ming Juan was a young lady; it was perfectly normal for a young master to offer guidance, right? There was no need for him to get into a fight over a girl he didn't even know.
"Go ahead," Miao Chengmin said to Ming Juan. "Since Young Master Wang is so willing to lower himself to serve you, just agree to him."
Ming Juan glanced at Wang Ruihu.
Wang Ruihu felt confident it would work out, raising his arm adorned with a luxury watch to smooth his hair.
"Let's go."
"Eh?!" Miao Chengmin felt himself being pulled back forcefully by Ming Juan, very determinedly. If he didn't move, he would fall over. Unable to resist, he dragged Ming Juan's suitcase while she pulled him along, not looking back.
"What?!" Wang Ruihu had never experienced such humiliation. Others would be eager for him to invite them! He shouted angrily, "Stop them!"
As three followers were about to step forward, Coach Jiang quickly stepped in front of them.
"As a teacher, I don't want to resort to violence against students," Coach Jiang said with a dark expression.
Wang Ruihu was so furious he stomped his feet repeatedly as everyone watched Miao Chengmin and Ming Juan take another route and jog into the dormitory area.
"Ha, ha..."
After turning a corner and confirming they were out of sight of Miao Chengmin and Wang Ruihu, Ming Juan immediately stopped, hands on her hips, leaning against the wall while taking deep breaths.
Miao Chengmin, dragging two suitcases, showed no signs of having run enough. He looked at Ming Juan's slightly parted lips and couldn't help but silently marvel at the physical fitness of a wealthy young lady.
Miao Chengmin quietly waited beside Ming Juan until she was ready to move on again before he followed her.
"Um..." Ming Juan hesitated as if she wanted to say something.
Miao Chengmin wanted to speak too.
"Thank you."
The two looked at each other in surprise as their voices completely overlapped!
"Uh..." They both simultaneously shifted their gazes away and asked at the same time: "You first?"
Again in unison!
Miao Chengmin awkwardly revealed a shy smile while Ming Juan laughed at his honest expression and said, "Oh dear, haha... then you go first."
"Thank you for pulling me away," Miao Chengmin admitted. "That Wang Ruihu is an insatiable guy; if he really got hold of you, he would definitely make my life miserable."
"Then why did you let me go with him?" Ming Juan playfully complained but kept her eyes fixed on the dormitory building ahead.
"Uh..." Miao Chengmin was captivated by Ming Juan's sweet voice and couldn't help but compliment, "Miss Ming, your voice is so lovely."
"Um..." Ming Juan was startled and suddenly realized how ambiguous her words had become. She quickly put away the smile that had been on her face.
"Well, thank you for being willing to protect... girls, even though we don't know each other," Ming Juan suddenly changed "I" to "girls."
"Haha, that's just me. I like to stand up for others. Whenever I see someone being bullied, I feel compelled to protect them," Miao Chengmin began to promote himself.
"Oh... that's nice." For some reason, Ming Juan felt a sense of loss in her heart.
As more and more college students passed by, the two had already reached the main road. Ming Juan pointed towards Building B-7 to the east, and they slowly walked in that direction.
"We're here." Miao Chengmin took a deep breath, feeling relieved. Today had been quite overwhelming; he had unexpectedly run into two wealthy individuals.
"What a big deal," Miao Chengmin thought as he watched Ming Juan carry two suitcases step by step up the dormitory stairs.
"Thank you, senior," Ming Juan said as she reached the top and turned back to bow to Miao Chengmin.
"Ah!" Miao Chengmin hurriedly bowed back to her, "You're welcome!"
"Wealthy people are indeed different," Miao Chengmin silently mused before turning to walk towards the cafeteria bathed in the slanting sunlight.
"It's about time; after dinner, there are new students from six to eight," Miao Chengmin muttered to himself as he started jogging ahead.
He felt that as a physically prominent athlete in the College of Agriculture and Forestry, he stood out too much among the predominantly female crowd.
What Miao Chengmin didn't know was that Ming Juan did not enter the building. She stood by the railing, watching him disappear among the autumn leaves until all that remained in her sight were the autumn foliage and passing pedestrians.
For Miao Chengmin's life, this was just a small episode; Ming Juan was merely one of many new students he encountered.
But for Ming Juan, Miao Chengmin was the first boy she had ever met who captured her affection.
After a day of volunteer work, Miao Chengmin's sweat-absorbing training outfit was completely soaked through. Due to what happened during the day, Li Tao had been sulking since then and hadn't said a word to Miao Chengmin.
"Alright, it's fine; it's just one girl. With so many flowers around, focusing on just one is rather dull," Miao Chengmin said as he put his arm around Li Tao's shoulder. "Don't be sad; let me treat you to some barbecue, okay? Okay?"
Li Tao kept his head down and remained silent, which left Miao Chengmin feeling helpless. Li Tao stepped out from under Miao Chengmin's arm and headed towards Building B-3 where the athletes lived.
"Sigh." Miao Chengmin didn't want to go back now; he was really hungry. That's why he thought of dragging Li Tao along for some barbecue.
It looked like he would be alone tonight.
It was already nine-thirty, and the barbecue stalls at school were still packed with people. After waiting for over ten minutes, Miao Chengmin finally got his skewers of grilled food.
"Forty-some yuan," Miao Chengmin thought ruefully; his meals for a day usually cost around thirty or forty yuan, but after a tiring day, he craved a hearty feast.
As he ate squid fish skewers, he opened his phone's Bluetooth and connected his headphones, allowing the surrounding noise to fade away as his favorite melodies began to play.
"The barriers keep accumulating; my tender heart makes a decision..."
For some inexplicable reason, his random playlist had landed on this song.
It was an old song from his father's generation; although he genuinely liked its melody and lyrics, he had never experienced the heart-wrenching pain of separation conveyed in its lyrics before.
"Sigh, most lovers in this world are destined to part ways. Why bother with romance?" Miao Chengmin looked at the couple in front of him, embracing each other, unsure whether to feel relieved or envious.
"Well then, goodbye, my girl. Thank you for your affection; you brought color to my world..."
Miao Chengmin quietly set down the skewers he had finished eating and couldn't help but start reminiscing about what had happened today.
"That girl named Ming Juan is really beautiful..." Miao Chengmin thought carefully about Ming Juan's figure. "It feels like her legs make up half of her body—so long and slender, and that waist..."
Suddenly, all he could see was Ming Juan's slim waist peeking out from her white sweatshirt. Miao Chengmin blinked rapidly, reminding himself not to be as superficial as Li Tao.
He decided to think of some flaws in Ming Juan to dispel his thoughts. However, after pondering for a while, every little thing she did only reinforced to Miao Chengmin that she was a rare and perfect girl.
"Heavens..." Miao Chengmin sighed and got up to ask the owner for a small bottle of beer.
Miao Chengmin raised the transparent paper cup filled with beer, shaking it slightly as the bubbles danced inside, reflecting the shadows of people walking behind him.
"Um... Senior?"
Miao Chengmin's eyes widened in surprise as he turned around.
Yu Feiyao gently placed her hand on Miao Chengmin's shoulder and smiled, saying, "You're the volunteer who helped Miss Ming with her suitcase, right?"
"Uh... yes," Miao Chengmin replied, lowering his head in disappointment.
"Here's the thing," Yu Feiyao sat down next to Miao Chengmin. "I'm a bit straightforward and can be blunt with my words, just so you know. I canceled my new student procedures tonight just to find you because of Ming Juan. What I mean is..."
Yu Feiyao suddenly stopped speaking. A big question mark appeared on Miao Chengmin's face: "What do you mean?"
Yu Feiyao took out her phone and showed him a QR code: "Scan this. There are some things I can't say face-to-face; I'm not the type who likes to flirt around."
Actually, Yu Feiyao's ultimate goal was for Miao Chengmin to scan this QR code, but she skipped the warm-up entirely.
"Okay, sure." Miao Chengmin scanned the QR code.
A stranger's message popped up on Miao Chengmin's phone.
"Add me," Yu Feiyao said while patting Miao Chengmin's shoulder. "Where the peach blossoms fall is a paradise."
"Huh?" Miao Chengmin watched Yu Feiyao toss her hair and walk away, mumbling to himself, "So strange."
In his ears, the final notes played softly: "Well then, goodbye, my girl. Thank you for your affection; you brought color to my world."
"I will wake up crying in dreams and return you to the sea of people."
