After the final exam, Li Wan learned that Gaoyuan had applied to skip a grade and take the entrance exam for senior year. If he passed, he would move directly to the third year of high school. This meant they would have fewer opportunities to meet in the future.
Li Wan looked at Gaoyuan's empty seat, feeling a mix of emotions. The questions she had wanted to ask him remained unanswered; he had only smiled at her before. In hindsight, it seemed that the timing wasn't right. She worried that once he entered senior year, they would no longer have time to see each other. It felt as if the distance between them was growing…
When the teacher announced that Gaoyuan had passed the entrance exam, the whole class congratulated him. Only Li Wan remained silent. After the break, she tried to visit Gaoyuan, but no one was home. Later, she heard from a neighbor that his family had gone on vacation. Li Wan felt a bit disappointed and returned to her hometown.
Since her last conversation with her father, Li Wan's relationship with her parents had improved significantly. They often came home to spend time with her, hoping to make up for the years of emotional distance. Li Wan was also working hard to strengthen their bond.
One evening, the family enjoyed dumplings together. As Li Wan watched her parents, she suddenly thought of Gaoyuan. She remembered the scene of him leaving with his parents on that day in the mountains. She truly envied him and wished she could go out and have fun with her own parents too…
As the New Year approached, the streets were adorned with festive decorations. Li Wan found herself missing Gaoyuan more and more. When she returned to her hometown, she deliberately picked a leaf similar to those from Gaoyuan's home and preserved it in a transparent bottle.
Ms. Li was pregnant; in a few months, she would become an older sister. Li Wan was very happy about this development. She hoped that the new baby would be happy and loved, unlike her own experience of feeling unloved.
With the start of the New Year, everything seemed to have a fresh beginning. Li Wan visited a temple to make a wish, hoping that Gaoyuan would also appear in her life again.
On New Year's Eve, Li Wan accompanied her grandmother to buy New Year goods.
The streets were crowded, filled with colorful decorations, and there were vendors selling balloons, cotton candy, and sugar figurines. Li Wan supported her grandmother as they walked slowly down the street.
Suddenly, her grandmother stopped.
Li Wan asked, "Grandma, what's wrong?"
Her grandmother replied, "I think I saw Xiao Yuan."
Li Wan was taken aback for a moment and followed her grandmother's gaze but did not see Gaoyuan anywhere.
"Grandma, are you sure?" Li Wan asked.
"Is that so?" Her grandmother frowned slightly and murmured, "Am I getting old and confused?"
Li Wan gently supported her grandmother and said softly, "Grandma, let's go back."
"Okay," her grandmother agreed.
Li Wan accompanied her grandmother home. Halfway there, her grandmother suddenly remembered something and stopped again.
"Grandma, what's wrong?" Li Wan asked.
"Xiao Yuan! It's Xiao Yuan!" her grandmother exclaimed.
Li Wan looked at her grandmother's anxious expression, feeling puzzled. "Grandma, what are you talking about?"
"I just saw Xiao Yuan! He was standing right there," her grandmother said, pointing to a corner in the distance.
Li Wan looked in the direction her grandmother was pointing and saw a young man wearing sunglasses and a black mask.
She paused for a moment and instinctively took a step forward. "Gaoyuan?" she called out.
Gaoyuan seemed surprised to be recognized; his body stiffened for a moment. He lowered his head, avoiding eye contact with her and remained silent.
Li Wan: "......"
Li Wan looked at him, feeling a bit uncomfortable inside.
Li Wan: "Are you doing okay lately?"
Gaoyuan: "......"
Gaoyuan remained silent.
Li Wan: "......"
Li Wan watched him, her heart feeling a bit sour.
Li Wan: "Gaoyuan, do you still consider me a friend?"
Gaoyuan: "......"
Gaoyuan pressed his thin lips together, still not speaking.
Li Wan: "......"
Li Wan looked at him, her eyes gradually turning red.
Li Wan: "Gaoyuan, do you know that I really miss you?"
Gaoyuan: "......"
Gaoyuan's body trembled slightly as he slowly lifted his gaze to meet hers.
Gaoyuan: "......"
Looking at her reddened eyes, a complex emotion flickered in Gaoyuan's gaze.
Li Wan: "......"
Li Wan held his gaze for a few seconds before turning to leave.
Gaoyuan: "......"
Gaoyuan watched her retreating figure, his eyes gradually dimming.
Gaoyuan: "......"
He stood there until she was out of sight before slowly raising his head.
