The next morning, Gaoyuan didn't come to class. I was a bit worried. What if something happened to him? I thought about calling him but remembered he was in the infirmary. I called the School Nurse to ask about Gaoyuan's condition. The School Nurse told me that Gaoyuan was still in the infirmary and had a slight fever.
"He had a bit of a fever yesterday, but I didn't pay attention," I said.
"His wound infection is quite serious," the School Nurse replied. "You kids these days really don't know how to take care of yourselves."
"..." I fell silent.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" the School Nurse asked.
"..." I continued to remain silent.
"Alright, hurry over and see him," the School Nurse said.
"Okay." I hung up the phone.
I walked to the infirmary door and knocked.
"Come in," the School Nurse said.
I walked inside. Gaoyuan was lying on the bed with his eyes closed, looking as if he were asleep. His complexion was still a bit flushed, but much better than yesterday.
"How is he?" I asked the School Nurse.
"He's fine; it's just that his wound infection is quite serious," she said.
"Wound infection?"
"Yes," the School Nurse replied. "This kid has such a serious wound and didn't think to come in for treatment sooner."
"..."
"Why are you silent again?" the School Nurse asked.
"..."
"Alright, you can stay here with him; I'll step out for now," the School Nurse said.
"Okay."
The School Nurse walked out.
I approached the bed and looked at Gaoyuan.
He was sleeping soundly.
I reached out and touched his forehead.
He seemed to have lost a lot of weight.
I thought of the scars on his body, and a pang of pain shot through my heart.
He must have suffered a lot, right?
Suddenly, his hand moved and grasped mine.
I was startled and quickly pulled my hand back.
He opened his eyes and looked at me, "It's you."
"Yeah," I replied softly.
"I thought I was dreaming," he said.
"..."
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I'm here to see you," I said.
"Worried about me?" he inquired.
"Of course I'm worried about you," I replied, "You're my friend."
He fell silent for a moment and then said, "Just a friend?"
"..."
"Just a friend?" he asked again.
"I..." I looked at him, unsure of what to say.
He gazed at me and said, "No matter what, don't ignore me."
"..."
"Don't reject me just because I have scars," he said.
"..."
"Is that okay?" he asked.
"I won't abandon you," I assured him.
He looked at me, the smile in his eyes deepening.
I felt a bit uncomfortable under his gaze. "What are you laughing at?"
"Nothing," he replied.
I shot him a glare and ignored him.
He continued to look at me and asked, "Are you going to worry about me all the time?"
"Of course I will," I said. "We're friends."
He fell silent for a moment and then said, "Just friends?"
"..."
After school, as soon as I stepped out of the classroom, I saw Lin Yao standing at the door.
She looked at me and said, "Today is my birthday, and I want to invite you to my house."
"Huh?" I was taken aback.
"Don't you want to?" Lin Yao asked.
"I..."
"Today is my birthday," Lin Yao emphasized.
"Alright," I conceded.
I walked out of the school gate with Lin Yao.
We didn't speak along the way.
I wanted to find a topic but didn't know what to say.
Lin Yao remained silent as well.
We walked in silence all the way to Lin Yao's house.
Lin Yao's mother greeted me warmly when she saw me.
I felt a bit awkward but responded politely.
Lin Yao pulled me into her room.
Her room was filled with various designer bags and shoes.
I was a bit surprised.
Although my family is wealthy, I never buy these things.
I think it's too wasteful.
Lin Yao looked at me and asked, "What do you think of this bag?"
I shook my head and replied, "I don't know."
"You don't know?" Lin Yao said, looking shocked. "This is the latest model from Like!"
"What is Like?" I asked.
Lin Yao looked at me as if I were a monster. "Like is a luxury brand."
"Oh," I responded.
Lin Yao sighed and shook her head. "I really don't know how you grew up."
"..."
...
Lin Yao's birthday party was arranged at a KTV.
I felt a bit out of place in this setting.
I didn't like the smell of smoke and alcohol.
I sat in the corner, watching them sing and dance.
Lin Yao and her friends were having a great time.
I took out my phone to check the time.
It was already eight o'clock; I should head back.
I stood up and told Lin Yao, "I'm leaving now."
Lin Yao glanced at me and said, "Just stay for a little longer."
"No, I really need to go," I replied.
"Okay then," Lin Yao said, "I'll walk you out."
"No need," I said, "I can go back by myself."
"Just be careful then," Lin Yao said.
"Mm," I nodded and walked out of the private room.
As soon as I stepped out, a boy grabbed my wrist.
