Lin Lu followed the direction of the stream, pushing aside the branches that blocked her path, her sharp gaze scanning the surrounding environment. The water was crystal clear and flowed gently, with the distant roar of a waterfall echoing in the air.
"There should be a cave nearby," Lin Lu thought to herself. The production team must have chosen this location after thorough investigation; they wouldn't leave them stranded in the wilderness without shelter.
Suddenly, a scream pierced the silence of the forest, echoing through the open valley. It was Li Xue.
Lin Lu's heart skipped a beat as she immediately turned and ran towards the source of the sound.
"What happened?" Lin Lu asked anxiously as she reached Li Xue's side, noticing her pale face and terrified expression. One of Li Xue's hands pointed to the ground while her body trembled uncontrollably.
Following Li Xue's finger, Lin Lu saw chaotic footprints and trampled bushes on the ground, clearly signs of human disturbance that resembled what Driver Old Wang had described as "those things."
"It must be those things! They will take us away!" Li Xue clutched Lin Lu's arm tightly, shouting incoherently in sheer panic.
"Calm down!" Lin Lu forcefully pried Li Xue's hand away, her eyes shining with determination. "It's not time to despair yet!"
At that moment, Chen Xue also arrived. Upon seeing the marks on the ground, her expression changed slightly, but she quickly composed herself and said reassuringly, "Don't scare yourselves; these could be left by other animals."
"Right, it could be wild boars or something," Lin Xuemin added as he arrived, looking around with a serious expression. "We should find a safe place to spend the night as soon as possible."
"Yan Liming found a cave!" came Yan Liming's voice from a distance.
Everyone turned to see Yan Liming standing on a large rock not far away, waving at them.
"Let's go!" Lin Lu was the first to run towards Yan Liming, followed closely by Lin Xuemin. Chen Xue and Li Xue supported each other as they trailed behind.
The cave was located beneath a concealed cliff; its entrance was small but deep enough to accommodate all five of them. Yan Liming took out a powerful flashlight from his backpack and illuminated the entire cave.
"This should be safe," Yan Liming said as he looked around. "We can spend the night here."
Lin Lu approached the entrance of the cave, observing the surroundings. The sky had completely darkened; it was pitch black in the forest, with only faint moonlight filtering through the gaps in the leaves. The night breeze brought a chill, and distant howls from wild beasts sent shivers down their spines.
"We need to start a fire," Lin Xuemin said as he set down his backpack and began gathering dry wood.
Lin Lu took a shovel from her backpack and dug a drainage ditch at the cave entrance to prevent rainwater from flooding into the cave.
Chen Xue sat in the corner, hugging her knees with a pale face, silent, while Li Xue nestled beside her, shivering.
"What's wrong?" Yan Liming walked over to Chen Xue and asked with concern.
"I'm fine," Chen Xue replied, lifting her head and forcing a faint smile. "I'm just a little scared."
"Don't worry, I'm here. I will protect you," Yan Liming said gently, his gaze filled with compassion.
Chen Xue looked at Yan Liming gratefully. "Thank you, Liming."
Lin Lu observed everything quietly, feeling somewhat uncomfortable but saying nothing as she continued digging the drainage ditch.
"Don't be afraid; we're right here. Nothing will happen," Lin Lu reassured Li Xue, handing her a bottle of water.
"Thank you, Lin Lu," Li Xue said as she took the water and glanced at her gratefully.
"It's nothing; we're all companions and should help each other," Lin Lu smiled. "You should rest early."
Li Xue nodded, took a few sips of water, then leaned against Chen Xue and closed her eyes.
The fire blazed up, illuminating the entire cave and dispelling the cold and fear within it.
"Let's take turns keeping watch to prevent wild animal attacks," Lin Xuemin suggested.
"Okay," Yan Liming nodded. "I'll take the first half of the night; you all can rest."
"Thank you," Lin Lu and Lin Xuemin said in unison.
"There's no need to thank me; it's what I should do," Yan Liming said with a smile.
Lin Lu and Lin Xuemin leaned against the cave wall, closing their eyes.
In the deep night, the forest was silent, with only the crackling of the campfire and the occasional chirping of insects breaking the stillness.
Suddenly, a low growl echoed from outside the cave, shattering the tranquility of the night.
Lin Lu opened her eyes wide and sat up, looking warily toward the cave entrance.
"What's wrong?" Lin Xuemin was also startled awake. "What was that sound?"
"It sounds like some kind of beast," Lin Lu whispered. "We should be careful."
Yan Liming stood up as well and walked to the entrance, shining a flashlight outside.
"It seems to be wolves!" Yan Liming's expression changed. "And there’s more than one!"
