I took a deep breath, trying to suppress the unease in my heart. "Where did you get this report?"
Du Ming did not answer my question but instead asked lightly, "What? Is there something wrong with what it says?"
"Did you investigate me?" I tightened my grip on the document, my fingertips turning white. "Why?"
He stood up and walked to the window, the moonlight outlining his tall figure. "Before marrying me, you should be aware of my identity."
"So what?" I bit my lip. "Is that why you sent someone to investigate me?"
He turned around, his gaze deep as he looked at me. "I just wanted to know what your purpose is in getting close to me."
His words pierced my heart like a thorn. Did he really think that everything I did was for some ulterior motive?
I threw the document onto the table and turned to leave. But he grabbed my wrist, pulling me back in front of him, a hint of barely noticeable panic in his tone. "Where are you going?"
"What does it matter where I go?" I shook off his hand and said coldly.
He looked at me with a complex expression, and finally sighed, releasing me. I walked out of the study without looking back, feeling a mix of emotions inside.
The next day, Bai Wei came to the Du Family to see me. Upon seeing my swollen eyes, she asked with concern, "Lingxi, what happened? Did Du Ming bully you?"
I shook my head, not wanting to worry her, forcing a smile as I said, "I'm fine; I just didn't sleep well last night."
Bai Wei clearly didn't believe me but didn't press further. She took my hand and said, "It's good if you're fine. I'm here today to teach you some etiquette and social skills for high society."
Seeing her serious demeanor warmed my heart. Under Bai Wei's patient guidance, I began learning how to dine elegantly, how to converse appropriately with others, and how to handle various social situations.
Days passed, and I gradually adapted to life in the Du Family and began to integrate into this unfamiliar circle. Meanwhile, Du Ming seemed to slowly lower his guard against me, becoming much gentler in his demeanor.
Until that day when Du Ming was injured in an accident, and I used my medical skills to save him. Looking at his pale face made my heart ache; at that moment, I forgot all doubts and unease and just wanted him to recover. When he woke up, his gaze was confused but flickered with a complex emotion upon seeing me. I pretended not to notice and simply said lightly, "You're awake; how do you feel?"
He opened his mouth as if wanting to say something but ultimately said nothing and silently avoided my gaze. I knew he needed time to process everything.
To ease the atmosphere, I suggested, "I had the kitchen prepare some light porridge; you should eat a little."
He nodded, and as I got up to fetch the porridge from the kitchen, I bumped into Lu Cha coming in with bird's nest soup. She saw me and her eyes flashed with resentment but quickly shifted to a pitiful expression as she weakly said, "Sister Lingxi, you’ve worked too hard; let me take care of Brother Ming."
I smiled faintly and stepped aside for her to pass while sneering inwardly. Was this drama finally about to begin?
I hosted a charity gala inviting many socialites and nobles to raise funds for children in mountainous areas. I played the guzheng while Bai Wei performed a dance; the entire banquet hall was filled with a joyful atmosphere. I mingled among the crowd, chatting amiably with people from various fields while exuding elegance and grace that earned rounds of admiration.
I noticed Du Ming's gaze was always following me, his eyes sparkling with an unreadable light. I knew that tonight would surely impress him. However, before I could savor this joy, an unexpected incident occurred.
"Lingxi! Something's wrong!" Bai Wei rushed up to me with a pale face. "I just saw... saw you struggling with a man in the garden..."
A sudden jolt ran through my heart, an ominous premonition washing over me. Before I could react, a cold voice came from behind: “Guo Lingxi, do you have anything to explain?”
I turned around to see Du Ming standing among the crowd, his face pale with disappointment and anger. Beside him stood the weeping green tea girl, weakly leaning into his embrace.
In that moment, everything became clear to me; this was all a trap designed by the green tea girl!
I took a deep breath, my gaze sweeping over the farcical scene before me. The green tea girl cried pitifully, while Du Ming radiated an icy aura, his eyes filled with disappointment and betrayal, as if I were a heinous criminal.
I opened my mouth but found that any explanation would sound hollow. Rather than trying to prove my innocence, it was better to wait for the truth to come to light. So I closed my eyes and swallowed all my grievances and anger.
“What’s wrong? Nothing to say?” Du Ming's voice was chilling, like a sharp blade piercing my heart. I remained silent, simply looking at him with clear and resolute eyes.
“Enough, Du Ming! Do you even have a brain?!” Bai Wei stormed through the crowd, pulling the green tea girl away from Du Ming. “Don’t you see who she is? Lingxi would never do something like this!”
Bai Wei pointed at the green tea girl without holding back: “You know very well what you did! Don’t think I don’t know that you deliberately lured Lingxi into the garden and had a man act out a scene just to make her look bad!”
The green tea girl's face turned pale, her eyes darting around as she still tried to maintain an innocent facade, sobbing: “Sister Bai Wei, what are you talking about? I was just worried about Brother Ming’s health and wanted Sister Lingxi to check on him. I really didn’t…”
“Enough!” Du Ming interrupted her impatiently, his sharp gaze turning towards me. “Guo Lingxi, you tell me what happened.”
I looked at this man before me, feeling a mix of emotions. He would rather believe an outsider than trust me. Perhaps this was the greatest tragedy between us. Yet I still remained silent, gently shaking my head before turning to leave the banquet hall.
Du Ming chased after me, grabbing my wrist with a hint of barely noticeable panic and regret in his tone: “Lingxi, I’m sorry…”
I shook off his hand and coldly replied: “Master Du doesn’t need to apologize; the innocent will clear themselves while the guilty will remain muddied.”
His face instantly turned pale, the panic in his eyes more evident as his lips moved but ultimately said nothing. I knew he had already believed Bai Wei’s words but couldn’t bring himself to confront his misunderstanding of me.
At that moment, my heart felt as if it had been torn apart.
