Su's mother opened her mouth and said "Oh," pausing for a moment before continuing, "You two seem quite compatible. Why is it that...?"
"Maybe it's a personality issue? It's hard to explain, but I've admired Mr. Xiao for many years. Even if I can't live with him, my feelings are unlikely to change."
I was speaking the truth, and I shared this with Su's mother without any reservations, wanting to reassure her that as a divorced woman, even if I grew closer to Su Qian in the future, there would be no romantic feelings involved because my heart belonged to someone else.
It seemed this approach was effective; she looked at me seriously, and in the end, her tone changed as she showed genuine concern for me.
"Miss Qiu is indeed a person of deep emotions; there aren't many women like that nowadays."
I smiled and didn't respond to her comment. I initially wanted to ask about Guan Mingyue but ultimately decided against it. After all, I wasn't very familiar with her, and since I had just started to make a good impression, I didn't want to ruin it with gossip. If she had no reservations about me, then Su Qian would likely feel better too.
After returning from the hospital, I felt a sense of peace and didn't pay much attention to these matters. At home, I went about my usual routine without thinking too much about Su Qian.
Mina hadn't called me in the past couple of days; I wasn't sure if she was too busy or if there was another reason.
I hadn't seen the man in black again, mainly because I went out so infrequently, and he wouldn't just break down my door, so it was normal not to see him.
Xiao Minxing occasionally called me, talking about trivial matters that sounded like he was bored and just happened to dial my number while playing on his phone.
Bai Xiaoqing from the comic company also called me once; it wasn't a pushy call but rather a discussion about some details. He mentioned that their office renovations were complete and invited me to visit next week and bring along the finished artwork.
Life seemed to fall into place quickly, moving forward day by day in an orderly manner.
My mood remained stable; I woke up in the morning and went to sleep at night, feeling as peaceful as if I were dreaming.
The weekend arrived quickly, just as I was about to forget about it when Mina called right on time on Friday night. She exclaimed urgently, "Darling, I'm still on a business trip!"
I replied somewhat confused, "Oh, if you haven't returned yet, then you haven't. Did you think I expected you to come over every week?"
She became anxious as soon as she heard, exclaiming, "It seems you haven't taken my words to heart at all. Didn't we say we would look for a nanny together this week? Even if I'm not back, you should go by yourself. Don't think you can slack off."
Her reminder made me recall last week's events, but since Mina wasn't home, I really didn't want to go alone. Besides, everything has been going well lately; I almost felt that hiring a nanny was just an unnecessary expense.
However, she was relentless on the other end of the line: "Even though I'm not in Haicheng right now, just thinking about your expression makes it clear you won't go. Fine, I'll just call Mr. Xiao."
"What are you calling him for?" I said anxiously, wishing I could snatch the phone from her.
But Mina maintained her calm demeanor: "Anan, even if you don't admit it, that child is still Mr. Xiao's, right? It's not wrong to have someone else take care of your child. Besides, you've never been to a housekeeping company before and don't know how to choose someone. What if you end up hiring someone unsuitable who can't take care of things and just adds to your worries?"
"I'll wait until you come back to choose; there's no rush."
"Hahaha, I knew you'd say that, so it's better to call Mr. Xiao just to be safe."
I was really getting anxious, fearing that Mina would hang up and immediately call Xiao Minxing. So I spoke quickly: "Just tell me honestly, have you already told him the truth?"
Mina refused to admit it: "No, but I've mentioned that with his intelligence, he won't be kept in the dark for long."
"I can't worry about that. As long as he doesn't know now, that's fine. Besides, we've already divorced; we're two unrelated people now. Why are you bringing him into this?"
Mina immediately countered: "If you don't reach out to him, are you going to let someone else do it? I've heard that Lu Yishan has been sticking to him quite closely lately."
"Why should I care about that?" I said this outwardly, but inside I felt quite bitter. Although initially I thought it would be good for Xiao Minxing to be with her so he wouldn't have any issues, thinking about it was one thing; seeing them together was another.
Mina continued to nag me for a while longer. In the end, neither of us convinced the other, but I knew she would definitely tell Xiao Minxing about this.
Sure enough, the next morning, just as I had set up my easel and hadn't even picked up my brush yet, the doorbell rang.
Through the peephole, I saw Xiao Minxing's handsome face waiting outside calmly for me to open the door.
"Why didn't you call ahead?" I asked shyly as he walked in.
He quickly scanned the room, not sitting down but leaning against the corner cabinet, saying, "Mina called me this morning."
I rolled my eyes internally, said nothing, and went out to get him a glass of water.
When I returned, he casually said, "I think I mentioned this to you before. What do you think about it now?"
The question felt strange, somewhat like a company boss chatting with a subordinate, that kind of feeling where you know he already has a plan and will act on it regardless, yet pretends to ask for your opinion.
It was truly hypocritical.
Seeing that I didn't respond, he opened the bottle cap and took a couple of sips before continuing, "I heard from Mina that you have a job now. I can't be bothered to ask what you're doing, but your health is still important. You should find someone to keep you company; they can handle things at home so you can focus on your work. Plus, going out for walks together would be better."
"I can manage on my own," I replied softly.
His tone suddenly turned harsh: "I know you're capable and can send me away to go back to the hospital again, but life is long. You can't just stay at home every day. Even if you're at home, if something happens, who will help you? Don't you know various accidents can happen during pregnancy? Unless you don't want this child, you need to take good care of it."
His strong words reminded me of his past self, making me forget to argue back as I stared at him blankly.
After finishing his statement, he adjusted his tone as if making an excuse for himself and said, "Entrusted by Mina, I'm just here to handle things. I don't want to talk too much."
I looked at his face and asked, "Are you that familiar with Mina now?"
