The doctor, seeing that I was being supported as I entered, immediately began to ask questions nervously.
"Does your stomach hurt? Have you seen any blood down there?"
I shook my head.
"Are there any other concerning symptoms?"
I was just about to shake my head again when Xiao Minxing interjected, "She vomited, it was really serious, and after vomiting, she felt like this."
I noticed the elderly gynecologist let out a quiet sigh of relief, then wrote some orders for us to take for tests.
The results came back.
There was no pregnancy.
I awkwardly handed the report to Xiao Minxing and saw the fleeting disappointment on his face, quickly replaced by a dejected demeanor.
He sat on a bench in the hospital, holding the report in his hands, his eyes still looking at it, but it was clear he wasn't really seeing anything; his expression was vacant.
Forgive me for being so dense; I increasingly couldn't understand this person. A few months ago, he went to great lengths to ensure I would terminate the pregnancy. The hurtful words and rough actions still sent chills down my spine whenever I thought about them. Yet now, he seemed extremely anxious about any news related to a child, clearly a father who hoped for a child.
I often doubted the extremes of his behavior; half of it seemed fake. Either he wanted a child from the beginning, or everything he showed now was just an act.
The first possibility seemed unlikely; the second seemed more plausible, yet it still couldn't explain the disappointment on his face.
By the time we returned home, it was nearly noon. The Lu family siblings had also arrived. Of course, we had taken their car away earlier, and now they were here to swap it back. They stood in the yard with Xiao Minxing, seemingly at a loss for words.
Instead, Lu Yishan immediately clung to him as soon as she saw him.
Xiao Minxing seemed a bit irritated this time, pulling her hand off her brother's arm and leading him to the other side.
I watched them move around and talk outside through the glass of the living room, like watching a silent play, where all the content had nothing to do with me, so I wasn't too concerned. I only felt a fleeting joy when I saw Lu Yishan's displeased expression.
After the siblings left, Xiao Minxing returned to the house, looking much better. She came over to sit with me for a while and asked how I was feeling now. If I was tired, I could go upstairs to rest.
Honestly, after all that fuss, I was fine. Now, aside from feeling a bit hungry, my mind was filled with questions.
He didn't explain much, resting his hands on his legs for a moment before saying, "If you're fine now, just sit here and rest. If you want to eat something, I'll go cook."
I looked at him as if he were telling a tall tale.
He simply nodded and got up to head to the kitchen.
When I saw the food laid out on the dining table, I thought I might be seeing things or perhaps had entered another layer of a dream.
There weren't many dishes, but they were indeed visually appealing and fragrant. And what kind of expression was that on his face?
He was eagerly staring at me, which made my hand tremble as I picked up my chopsticks. I almost imagined scenarios where there might be poison in the food.
"How is it?" he asked calmly, his voice steady and unhurried.
I quickly nodded but suddenly felt embarrassed. I always thought my cooking skills were decent, especially after marrying him. With nothing much to do, I often followed recipes from books or online tutorials. Although sometimes I ended up making disastrous dishes, most of the time they turned out okay.
However, after comparing my cooking to his today, I felt utterly inadequate. How could everything he made be so much better? Clearly, he usually didn't lift a finger in the kitchen; how did he manage to whip up something so good so effortlessly?
After thinking it over, I sincerely complimented him: "It's really delicious, better than what I make."
He smiled slightly, picked up his chopsticks, and his tone became noticeably more relaxed: "There aren't many people as clumsy as you; rare species should be protected. You should cook less in the future."
"Ah? Then what should I do?" The full disdain still made me feel quite bitter.
Xiao Minxing raised an eyebrow and suddenly changed his tone, saying, "Me."
I didn't understand his meaning and continued to stare at him, but he had already started eating and casually picked up a piece of rib for me.
The shift in our relationship took me a week to adapt, and I still couldn't figure out what went wrong or who might have influenced Xiao Minxing.
He really cooked dinner every day after work. In the mornings, we usually got up together. If I made breakfast, he would change clothes and get ready for work in advance; if he cooked, I would prepare my things for the art studio.
After eating, we would go out together. He would drive me to the training room first before heading to work himself.
We still talked very little, but the atmosphere was surprisingly good. I often pinched my leg to remind myself that this wasn't a dream; it was real.
Changes occurred in the new week. That day, we were sitting in the car as usual when I received a call from Mina.
I glanced at Xiao Minxing and answered the call.
However, a male voice came from the other end: "Hello, you must be a friend of this phone's owner?"
"Yes, who are you?"
The person on the other end politely said, "I am a local police officer. Your friend is currently with us; please come as soon as possible."
I quickly filtered through the key points of his words and asked him, "What's the specific address?"
"Yunnan Lijiang..."
After hanging up the phone, I panicked and grabbed Xiao Minxing, saying, "I'm not going to the art studio anymore. Let me out; Mina is in trouble. I need to go to Yunnan."
He frowned at me. The car had stopped, but he didn't let me out. Then he asked, "What’s going on? Don’t panic."
The police over there didn’t say anything either; they just told me to go over, so I couldn’t explain what was happening to him. My mind was a mess, and I was anxious to see Mina.
He quickly said, "Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it."
After that, he started making phone calls. I didn’t know who he was calling, but soon we were back home, grabbing the necessary documents and some clothes before heading to the airport.
When we went through security, I suddenly remembered to ask him, "Aren't you going to work? You don’t need to see me off."
Xiao Minxing's expression darkened, and he said in a hoarse voice, "I’m going with you."
I knew he didn’t get along with Mina. Now that something had happened to her, I didn’t even think about letting him come along. Even if he did go, I couldn’t imagine how he would be of any help; it would be better if he didn’t come at all.
But he was already pushing me forward and went straight through the security checkpoint.
As soon as the plane landed, I called Mina. The man who answered was the same one from before. Strangely, he said he was off work now and told us to come to his house, giving me an address.
My intuition told me something was off, but I was really worried about Mina, so I reported the police address to the taxi driver.
Xiao Minxing remained silent, looking down at his phone for a while. A few minutes later, he held his phone out in front of the driver and said, "Take us here."
