As soon as the auctioneer's voice fell, the previously whispering banquet hall erupted into a flurry of conversation, with guests exchanging glances and speculating about Gu Chen's identity and background.
"Who is this Mr. Gu? How could he spend so lavishly to acquire 'Dawn'?" a lavishly dressed noblewoman quietly asked her companion.
"I haven't heard of him. Could he be some low-profile rich second generation?" her companion replied in a hushed tone, curiously eyeing Gu Chen.
Gu Chen stood calmly beside me, seemingly oblivious to the discussions around us, his lips curved into a faint smile.
Yan Shi, however, looked extremely displeased. He gripped his champagne glass tightly, his knuckles turning white, and the fury in his eyes was nearly boiling over. He could not accept that the woman he had been pursuing and the jewelry she designed had been snatched away by an unknown painter. For him, it was not just a financial loss but a blow to his dignity.
"Mr. Gu, you certainly have a generous hand," Yan Shi said with a forced smile as he approached, his tone laced with sarcasm. "I just wonder how you managed to earn so much money? Artworks don't seem to be enough, do they?"
Yan Shi's words were sharp and cutting, subtly implying that Gu Chen's financial sources were questionable, intending to embarrass him in front of everyone.
Gu Chen maintained his poised smile. He gently draped an arm over my shoulder and replied calmly, "Mr. Yan is joking. I simply admire Xiaoman's designs and wanted to buy them for my collection. As for my financial capabilities, I believe Mr. Yan need not worry about that."
Yan Shi was infuriated by Gu Chen's composed demeanor. He sneered coldly, "Mr. Gu, you better understand that Xiaoman is mine..."
"Yan Shi!" I abruptly interrupted him, my tone carrying a warning. "Please show some respect!"
My gaze was icy, devoid of any emotional fluctuation, which made Yan Shi flinch as he realized that his earlier outburst had thoroughly angered me.
The atmosphere in the banquet hall became tense and delicate; everyone watched this sudden conflict unfold without daring to intervene.
I gently pulled my arm away from Gu Chen's grasp and walked up to Yan Shi, my tone calm yet undeniably firm. "Yan Shi, we are done. Please do not entangle yourself with me any further."
After saying this, I turned away without looking back and linked my arm with Gu Chen's, leaving the banquet hall amidst the astonished gazes of the crowd.
The night was like flowing water, and the night view of Huahai City was dazzling and enchanting, yet it could not illuminate the turmoil within Yan Shi at that moment. He stood there, watching the backs of me and Gu Chen as we walked away together, filled with bitterness and regret.
I noticed Gu Chen's hand gently stroking the back of my hand, as if silently comforting me. I took a deep breath, trying to calm the emotions surging within me.
After the auction for "Dawn" concluded, the other segments of the charity gala began to unfold, and the atmosphere gradually returned to its lively state. However, the tension between Yan Shi and me hung in the air like an invisible thorn, impossible to ignore.
Staff members moved through the guests with trays in hand, the clinking of champagne glasses mingling with elegant music, as if nothing had happened at all.
Gu Chen leaned closer to my ear and asked softly, "Are you okay?"
I forced a smile. "I'm fine; sorry for making you witness such a scene."
Gu Chen said nothing but gently patted the back of my hand, his eyes filled with concern.
"Congratulations to bidder number 18 for successfully acquiring 'Dawn' at a price of fifty million!" the auctioneer announced excitedly.
The crowd erupted in astonishment; fifty million was far beyond the value of "Dawn" itself, proving the bidder's affection and regard for it.
Curiously, I looked in the direction of the bidding number and was shocked to discover that bidder number 18 was none other than Gu Chen!
When did he participate in the bidding? I didn't notice at all!
Gu Chen also sensed my gaze; he smiled gently at me, his eyes filled with affection and warmth.
Before I could ask, Gu Chen had already stood up and walked toward the stage.
He took "Dawn" from the auctioneer but did not leave immediately. Instead, he turned to face me and walked toward me step by step.
My heart raced violently, a sense of foreboding washing over me.
I avoided his gaze, picked up a glass of champagne, and took a small sip, trying to numb myself with alcohol. However, the bitter taste only made my thoughts more chaotic.
At that moment, the auctioneer returned to the stage. He cleared his throat and announced loudly, "Next, we will proceed to the most exciting part of the evening—the final ownership of 'Dawn'!"
The spotlight instantly shone on the auction table, where the diamond necklace and earrings set named "Dawn" sparkled under the lights, radiating an enchanting glow.
My heartbeat quickened involuntarily. Although "Dawn" no longer belonged to me, I still hoped it would find someone who truly appreciated it.
The auctioneer scanned the room with a professional smile on his face. "I believe everyone is eager to know who will be the final owner of 'Dawn,' so let us wait and see!"
The big screen began to display the bidders' numbers and bids, with the figures continuously climbing until they finally settled on an astonishing amount.
