“Xiao Lin!” the girl exclaimed, “Xiao Lin, are you okay?”
“I…” I opened my mouth but couldn't make a sound.
“Don't scare me!” she cried, “Wake up!”
That voice sounded so familiar.
Who is she?
I wanted to see her face clearly, but everything in front of me was blurry.
“Xiao Lin!” she shouted, “Wake up…”
She held me tightly, crying heart-wrenchingly.
I struggled to lift my hand to wipe away her tears.
“Don’t… cry…”
“You're awake?” She looked at me with surprise, “Are you okay?”
“I…” I opened my mouth; my throat burned painfully.
“Call an ambulance!” she shouted.
Soon, the ambulance arrived.
I was taken to the hospital.
Chen Yun's Mother stood by the bed, looking at me anxiously: “How are you? Are you still feeling unwell?”
“I…” I wanted to speak but couldn't get the words out.
“Don't talk,” she said, “Just rest well.”
I looked at her, feeling a pang in my heart.
She… is actually concerned about me?
Why?
Is it because I saved her daughter-in-law?
At that moment, the door was pushed open.
Chen Gang walked in.
“Gang, you're here,” Chen Yun's Mother said to him, “You should check on Xiao Lin.”
“Okay.” Chen Gang nodded and walked to the bedside.
He looked at me, his expression complex: “Thank you for saving Xiao Lei.”
“…” I looked at him and remained silent.
“By the way,” Chen Gang suddenly said, “Xu Zimo mentioned… that you’re pregnant, right?”
Outside the hospital.
"Did you hear that Xiao Lin is pregnant?" Chen Gang looked at Xu Zimo, his tone flat.
Xu Zimo glanced at him, his eyes cold: "It's just a misdiagnosis."
"Oh." Chen Gang nodded, "I returned to the country a while ago."
"Really?" Xu Zimo sneered, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I was afraid of disturbing you," Chen Gang replied lightly.
"Afraid of disturbing me?" Xu Zimo scoffed, "I think you're just afraid to see me."
"..." Chen Gang lowered his head, remaining silent.
"I heard you got engaged in America?" Xu Zimo asked.
"Yeah." Chen Gang nodded.
"Is that so?" Xu Zimo raised an eyebrow, "Then congratulations."
"Thank you," Chen Gang said softly.
"When do you plan to get married?" Xu Zimo inquired.
"Probably by the end of the year," Chen Gang answered.
"Good," Xu Zimo nodded, "Don't forget to inform me then."
"I will," Chen Gang replied.
"Then you can go back now," Xu Zimo said, "I'll take care of Xiao Lin here."
"I know," Chen Gang smiled, "I never thought about getting back together with her; I just want to settle things."
"Settle things?" Xu Zimo sneered, "What do you want to settle?"
"I..."
"Chen Gang." Xu Zimo stared at him, "You better stay away from Xiao Lin."
"..." Chen Gang was silent for a moment, "I understand."
"Then I'll take my leave," he said before turning to leave.
Xu Zimo watched his retreating figure, narrowing his eyes.
"Xiao Lin," he suddenly spoke up.
"Hmm?" I looked at him in confusion.
"Don't say anything," he said firmly.
"..." I obediently fell silent.
He stared at me for a moment, then suddenly reached out and pulled me into his embrace.
I looked at him in shock.
He gazed at me, his eyes deep as the ocean.
I felt my face flush and my heart race under his gaze, and I hurriedly averted my eyes.
"Your hand..." he said softly.
"My hand?" I paused, "What's wrong with my hand?"
"Your arm..." he frowned, "What happened?"
"Oh, this." I smiled slightly, "I bumped into something by accident."
"Bumped into something?" He looked at me sharply, "How did that happen?"
"Well..." I hesitated for a moment, "I encountered a motorcycle on the road and just pushed it away."
"And then?" he pressed.
"And then I fell down," I explained.
"Fell down?" He narrowed his eyes, "How did you fall?"
"I..." I looked at him, unsure of how to respond.
"You..." He looked at me with a complicated expression, "Why did you do that?"
"I..." I bit my lip, "I just didn't want her to get hurt."
"Do you know her?" he asked.
"Yes," I nodded, "She is Chen Gang's fiancée."
"..." He fell silent.
"You..." I cautiously looked at him, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," he took a deep breath, "You should go home now."
"Okay," I nodded.
