"I can no longer be with Chen Gang."
"Is that so?" Xu Zimo sneered, suddenly reaching out to pinch my face.
I looked at him in confusion.
"If you're not sad, then why are you crying?"
Crying?
I reached up to touch my face, and it was indeed wet.
It turned out I had really been crying.
But I hadn't noticed at all.
"Xiao Lin, if you want to win him back, I can tell him that our marriage is fake, just a mutual arrangement."
"No way." I instinctively refused.
"Why not?" He raised an eyebrow. "Are you reluctant to part with me?"
"I..."
I opened my mouth but couldn't express my true feelings.
Yes.
I was reluctant to part with him.
Long ago, I had already fallen in love with him.
But I couldn't say it out loud.
Because I knew our marriage was just a matter of convenience.
He needed a woman to deal with his family's pressure to marry.
And I needed a way to completely forget Chen Gang.
Though we shared the same bed, we were dreaming different dreams.
"Xiao Lin, if you don't want to give up on Chen Gang, I can help you."
"How will you help?"
"I'll tell Chen Gang that our marriage is fake. You're with me just to deal with my family's pressure to marry."
"And then what?"
"Then, you can be together openly and honestly."
A wave of suppressed emotions surged within me; I didn't know what it was, but it filled me with immense hatred.
I hated myself for unknowingly developing feelings for him.
I hated myself for deciding to act well, yet getting too immersed in the role.
I hated myself for being unable to express my truest thoughts from the depths of my heart.
"Xiao Lin, why aren't you speaking?"
"What do you want to say?" I retorted.
He looked at me, his gaze slightly dimmed: "Do you really want to win back Chen Gang?"
I didn't answer.
"Xiao Lin, if you truly want to win him back, I can help you."
"Why do you want to help me?"
"Because..." he paused, his voice a bit hoarse, "because I don't want to see you regret it."
You don't want to see me regret it?
I looked at him and suddenly felt like laughing.
He clearly doesn't love me, yet he's afraid I'll regret it.
Xu Zimo, what kind of person are you?
"Xiao Lin, I'll give you time; think it over carefully."
"No need." I shook my head.
"No need to think it over?" He frowned. "Have you made up your mind about whether to win back Chen Gang?"
"What I mean is, let's pretend today never happened."
"What did you say?" He looked at me in disbelief.
"I said, let's pretend today never happened."
"Xiao Lin, have you really thought this through?"
"I have thought it through."
"Good, very good." He let out a cold laugh and slowly stood up. "Xiao Lin, remember what you said."
After saying that, he got up and left. I watched his departing figure as a gust of wind blew in. The floor he had just walked on was marked with water stains. Was he pretending to be drunk? I felt both frustrated and heartbroken. I sat on the sofa for a week, waiting for Xu Zimo to return, but he never did.
Finally, I couldn't help but pick up my phone and call his colleague, Ma Jun. "Where is Xu Zimo?"
"Doctor Xu has been staying at the hospital these past few days. Didn't he tell you?"
"What?" He went straight to the hospital without telling me?
"Sister-in-law, don't be angry. Doctor Xu has been busy lately and hasn't had time to go back. You know how it is for us doctors; our work hours are unpredictable, and sometimes we get so busy we can't even eat."
"I understand."
"Sister-in-law, Doctor Xu is usually very composed, and he cares about you a lot, so you should trust him."
"He cares about me?"
"Yes," Ma Jun said with a smile. "Sister-in-law, actually, Doctor Xu is very concerned about you. Sometimes when you're not around, he secretly prepares surprises for you..."
Surprises? My heart trembled slightly.
"Ma Jun, are you saying that Xu Zimo... likes me?"
"Well..." Ma Jun chuckled awkwardly. "I'm just guessing, but I think Doctor Xu definitely feels more than just friendship for you."
My heart raced suddenly. Could it be that Xu Zimo really liked me?
