Chu Yunqing's heartfelt performance moved many people present. Some young gentlemen were particularly curious about this "Ayan," speculating about his identity and eager to catch a glimpse of him.
Sitting next to Chu Yunqing, Xiao Jingyan felt a wave of irritation as he watched her. He knew well that her acting skills were exceptional, but he couldn't determine how much of her words were true or false, which only deepened his suspicion about "Ayan's" identity.
Concubine Shen sat nearby, watching Chu Yunqing become the center of attention with jealousy. She snorted coldly and said sarcastically, "The Empress is truly in high spirits, openly reminiscing about an old lover at the banquet. Isn't she afraid of being laughed at when this gets out?"
Chu Yunqing had anticipated that Concubine Shen would seize the opportunity to attack her. She set down her wine cup, turned to Concubine Shen, and a mocking smile appeared on her lips. "Concubine Shen is joking. I, the Empress, am merely reminiscing about the past; where does the term 'old lover' come from? But Concubine Shen, why are you so interested in my private matters? Could it be…"
As she spoke, Chu Yunqing deliberately elongated her tone, her sharp gaze fixed on Concubine Shen, filled with warning.
Concubine Shen was left speechless by Chu Yunqing's words, her face alternating between red and white. She dared not say anything further and could only glare at Chu Yunqing resentfully before lowering her head to drink in silence.
Seeing this, Chu Yunqing let out a cold laugh in her heart, ignoring Concubine Shen and continuing to chat and laugh with other officials as if nothing had happened.
After the banquet ended, Chu Yunqing dismissed everyone except for Green Lotus.
"Green Lotus, did you notice anyone at today's banquet who reacted unusually upon hearing the name 'Ayan'?" Chu Yunqing asked while removing her heavy headdress.
"Replying to Your Majesty, I noticed that Lord Wang, the Minister of War, and Lord Zhao, the Vice Minister of Rites, both looked somewhat unnatural when they heard the name 'Ayan,'" Green Lotus replied after thinking for a moment.
Chu Yunqing nodded, a glint of insight flashing in her eyes. "Very well. Have someone keep a close watch on these two and see who they associate with privately and if there are any unusual actions. Report back to me immediately."
"I will obey," Green Lotus said as she took her leave.
Chu Yunqing sat alone in front of the dressing table, gazing at her stunning reflection in the mirror, yet her heart was filled with determination.
“Ayan, who exactly are you? What secrets are you hiding?” Chu Yunqing murmured softly, a glint of resolve flashing in her eyes. “No matter who you are, I will find you and uncover all the mysteries!”
Facing the bronze mirror, she slowly removed the pearl earrings from her ears, the words of Lord Wang and Lord Zhao echoing in her mind as they displayed a fleeting panic and hesitated when they heard the name “Ayan.” This only strengthened her belief that her drunken words tonight had indeed cast the right net, and she was just waiting for the fish to bite.
A few days later, Green Lotus hurried into the chamber and reported to Chu Yunqing, “Your Highness, I have found out that Lord Wang, the Minister of War, and Lord Zhao, the Vice Minister of Rites, have been in close contact privately, and…”
Green Lotus hesitated. Chu Yunqing put down the book she was reading and looked up at Green Lotus. “And what? Speak freely.”
“And I also discovered that both of them seem to have intricate connections with a villa outside the city.” Green Lotus paused and lowered her voice. “That villa is located in a remote area with tight security; my people could not get close at all.”
Upon hearing this, Chu Yunqing lightly tapped her fingers on the table, falling into deep thought. A villa outside the city with strict defenses must be hiding some secret. Lord Wang and Lord Zhao—one being the Minister of War and the other the Vice Minister of Rites—seemed unrelated yet were both entangled with the name “Ayan.” What connection could there possibly be?
