My cousin was standing next to me with two police officers. Later, through my cousin's narration, I learned what had happened afterward. After my car plunged into the river, I lost consciousness. A truck full of vegetables fell into the water, and several hours later, passersby discovered it and called for help from the villagers.
When they rescued me, someone found a bloated female corpse at the bottom of the river, tied to a large stone, clearly a victim of murder. The villagers reported it to the police and called an ambulance to take me to the hospital.
Later, an autopsy revealed that the woman had signs of having been assaulted before her death; she had been killed and weighted down with a stone in the river. It was also discovered that one of her bones was fractured, caused by being hit by a vehicle, and there were signs of a collision on my large truck. This meant that the woman had indeed been struck by my vehicle.
Through police investigations, the truth of the matter was largely reconstructed. The woman's name was Xu Ru, twenty-three years old, who had been married for just over a year. After carrying her pregnancy for ten months, she gave birth to a baby boy. However, due to being born prematurely and her family's poor conditions, the child developed health issues and suffered from high fever within a month.
The woman initially planned to take her child to the hospital herself, but as the child's condition worsened, she had no choice but to rush him to the hospital. Unfortunately, during that time, it was impossible to get a taxi. Eventually, she managed to flag down my car but was struck by it instead; although she didn't die immediately, she sustained broken bones.
Despite her intense pain, she held onto her child and continued trying to hail another vehicle when she encountered a man with ill intentions. The man took advantage of her vulnerability, raped her, and then killed her before tying her to a stone and sinking her in the river.
After her death, she transformed into a vengeful spirit that haunted me. Because I had hit her with my car at the moment she died, she continued to follow me.
The reason she didn't harm me was that she wasn't the one I had harmed; instead, she entrusted me to take her child to the hospital. As for the man, he has already been caught by the police. Later, I visited him in prison once, and he said he acted on impulse, which led him to commit such an act. But the law is just, and he ultimately could not escape its grasp.
After the police investigation, it turned out that the person who sold me the truck was the murderer. That night, he drove past Sanliqiao, and when the woman waved at him with her child, he didn't stop. It was only after he had driven away that he realized he had hit someone and injured the woman.
At that moment, he panicked, fearing that the woman would accuse him of wrongdoing, so he decided to flee. He drove back and found the woman injured and sitting on the ground in pain. In a moment of lust, he raped her. Afterward, fearing she would report him to the police, he strangled her and tied her to a stone before sinking her in the river. The child in her arms was only six months old and kept crying. In a fit of desperation, he killed the child by throwing it down and then buried it in a small grove by the river.
He initially thought he had executed this plan flawlessly without anyone knowing. However, unexpectedly, not long after, I bought this truck. When this truck passed Sanliqiao, it encountered that young mother holding her swaddled baby. The mother had been desperately searching for her child, which is why she kept following me. Yet she didn't know who had harmed her, so she continued to stay close to me.
Later on, fearing that his crime would be exposed, the murderer decided to sell the truck quickly. At that time, I happened to be looking to buy a vehicle, so he sold it to me at a low price. I became an unwitting scapegoat. I stayed in the hospital for a few days for treatment but was discharged since my injuries were not severe.
That night, my cousin and I drank heavily to celebrate our survival after the ordeal. After this incident, my relationship with my cousin became even closer. He said that from now on, I would follow him around, ensuring that I would enjoy a life of luxury. I replied that I would never drive again; buying a car was out of the question since I couldn't even get a taxi. I might as well stick to running my small restaurant.
By midnight, I stumbled home, feeling quite drunk. Sitting on the sofa, I let out a sigh. The events of the past few days felt like a heavy stone pressing down on my heart, making it hard for me to breathe. Now that the truth had finally come to light, I felt somewhat relieved. Yet, deep down, I couldn't shake off the feeling of sadness.
Suddenly, I felt a chill run through me. When I looked up, my hair stood on end. There stood a young woman holding a swaddled baby in front of me. Her eyes were filled with sorrow but also a hint of relief as she quietly gazed at me. From the swaddle came the sound of a baby crying.
I staggered to my feet and walked toward her. She took two steps back, keeping her distance from me. "Is it you?" I asked. "Have you found your child?"
She silently nodded, tears streaming down her face. I bowed deeply to her and said, "I'm sorry; it was my fault that you suffered." She shook her head, indicating that I didn't need to apologize. Then she bowed deeply to me before her figure gradually faded away.
