Ghostly Hitchhiker

墨書 Inktalez
That night, I was driving along a country road outside Sanliqiao Village. It had just rained, and the road was bumpy and difficult to navigate. I drove cautiously, afraid of any accidents. 0

At that moment, I spotted a young woman not far ahead, standing by the roadside with a bundle in her arms. She was soaked through and looked anxious. Her clothes were drenched, as if she had just been pulled out of the water. 0

After a moment's thought, I stopped the car and asked her where she was headed. 0

"Up ahead," she replied coldly, showing no sign of gratitude. 0

I felt a bit annoyed but didn't dwell on it and started driving again. 0

As we traveled, I tried to make conversation by asking if her child was sick. However, she completely ignored me, sitting there expressionless while water dripped from her clothes, soaking the seat. 0

I felt a pang of concern; the seat cover was new and I hadn't used it much. But seeing her distant demeanor, I decided not to say anything further. 0

After about twenty minutes, we reached a small riverbank. Suddenly, she asked me to pull over. 0

I complied and asked what was wrong. 0

In an icy tone, she told me to get out of the car. 0

I was taken aback and said, "Why should I get out? Aren't you going to the city? I'm giving you a ride." 0

She stopped talking and just stared at me silently. I felt a bit uneasy under her gaze and had no choice but to get out of the car. Just as I stepped out, she slammed the door shut with a bang. I was frustrated; what was wrong with this woman? Asking for help yet acting so arrogantly? 0

I quickly walked over to the passenger side, intending to get back in. But at that moment, she suddenly rolled down the window and asked me, "Have you seen my child?" 0

I was taken aback and instinctively glanced into her arms. The swaddling was tightly wrapped, and I saw nothing. So, I shook my head and replied, "I haven't seen anything." 0

To my surprise, she smiled at my response. Then, she abruptly turned around and disappeared into the night. 0

I was stunned; in this vast wilderness, where could she have run off to so quickly? I tried calling out, "Can you help me close the door?" But she didn’t respond. 0

Reluctantly, I walked around to the other side of the car to close the door myself. When I turned back around, however, I realized that the woman had already vanished without a trace. A chill ran down my spine. Could it be that this woman wasn’t human? 0

This all started yesterday when I bought a second-hand truck specifically to help transport vegetables from the countryside of Adjacent City to the local market in our city. The work wasn’t tiring, but it required staying up late; I had to deliver all the vegetables before dawn. After all, if they sat too long, they wouldn’t be fresh anymore. 0

I think this job is pretty good; the pay is decent, and I'm young and strong, so staying up late is no problem for me. 0

On the first day, I set off at 1 AM. It takes about three hours to drive from my home to the countryside of Adjacent City, so I set the navigation to avoid getting lost. 0

But as I drove, I noticed something was off with the navigation. I was supposed to get on the Expressway from the city center, but the navigation was telling me to turn around and go back. 0

Confused, I glanced at my phone; it had full signal and seemed fine. When I looked up again, I was shocked to see a river ahead of me. 0

Panic set in, and I quickly pulled over. This wasn't right; I distinctly remembered there being no river in this area. It felt as if the river had appeared out of nowhere. A chill ran down my spine, and beads of sweat formed on my forehead. 0

I hurriedly turned around and followed the route that the navigation had originally provided. 0
