Chapter 48 Royal Family
According to the address provided by Li the Cripple, I finally arrived at the village where the Royal Family is located the next day. The village is not large, with about a hundred households. Upon entering the village, I asked the villagers about the Royal Family. The villagers looked at me with curiosity, their eyes darting around me, making me feel quite uneasy.
I asked one of the villagers if there was something wrong. The villager replied, "With your appearance, are you here to check the feng shui for the Royal Family?"
From this remark, it was clear that the Royal Family had often invited people to check their feng shui. So I answered him that I was here to help renovate the house for the Royal Family, but I was not invited by them.
Upon hearing this, the villager showed some disdain towards me. He frowned and said, "The Royal Family is so poor now; how can you scammers come to cheat them out of money? You really have no conscience. Previously, the Royal Family spent their own money to invite someone to check their feng shui, and now you come knocking on their door, specifically asking to help them. What kind of people are you in this line of work?"
I couldn't take it anymore and retorted, "Brother, I don't appreciate what you're saying. How can you associate me with scammers? I'm here to help the Royal Family, and you're making it sound like I'm some kind of fraud. It's really hard to be a good person these days."
After saying that, to avoid further conflict with the villager, I quickly explained that I was here at someone else's request to check on the Royal Family for free and not for money. With that, the villager nodded half-believingly and stopped worrying about whether I would scam the Royal Family out of their money.
However, from the villager's account, I learned that the Royal Family was indeed very wealthy over a decade ago but later lost everything. The head of the family originally ran a business but for some unknown reason started facing misfortune after building their house, losing money year after year. Eventually, they lost all their capital and could no longer recover.
As time went on, some people suggested that perhaps it was due to bad feng shui in their house and recommended inviting a master to take a look. They did invite masters repeatedly, but none had any effect; they wasted a lot of money without results.
Later on, due to lack of funds, the Royal Family had no choice but to abandon business and turn to farming. However, even then, their crops were either washed away by floods or destroyed by birds or wild boars, leading to increasingly poor harvests year after year—essentially nothing went right for them.
Then two years ago, the head of the Royal Family fell seriously ill. Without money for treatment, he has been bedridden ever since, his condition worsening over time until he became emaciated. The illness of the head of the family undoubtedly added insult to injury for the already struggling Royal Family, leaving everything dependent on his wife Lin Family, who had to manage everything while also caring for her sick husband. Meanwhile, their child relied on kind-hearted villagers just to attend school.
Hearing this made me sigh inwardly; it truly is a cruel twist of fate that a misunderstanding has led this family to such dire straits—it’s genuinely heartbreaking.
I urged the villager to take me quickly to see the Royal Family. After hearing about their current situation from him, I felt an even stronger desire to help turn their fortunes around. After all, they are good people who deserve good outcomes. The kindness shown by Lin Family when they killed a chicken as a New Year gift for Li the Cripple was misunderstood and led to suffering for the Royal Family. How could I stand by and watch?
Before long, the villager brought me to the Royal Family. As soon as I entered their home, I saw a woman in plain clothes carrying a heavy load of firewood coming from afar. The villager pointed at her and said that she was Lin Family.
I grew up in the countryside, where everyone in the village worked in agriculture. However, seeing a frail woman carrying such a large bundle of firewood made me feel a sense of sorrow.
Perhaps the woman noticed someone at her doorstep, as she quickened her pace. Before long, she finally returned home, out of breath, placing the firewood under the eaves. She hurriedly greeted the villager who brought me, asking if there was something wrong.
After the villager explained our purpose, the woman was surprised and looked puzzled. Indeed, it was unusual for someone to suddenly approach and offer to help with Feng Shui for free. Although she had her doubts, she warmly invited me inside and busied herself pouring tea for me.
Once inside, I accepted the hot tea she handed me and said, "You must be from the Lin family, right?"
The woman nodded. "Yes, I heard from Uncle Wang that you are here to help with our Feng Shui, but I didn't ask anyone for a Feng Shui master. Moreover... our situation is quite difficult right now; even if we wanted to hire someone, we would worry about neglecting them."
I quickly waved my hand. "Sister, you misunderstand. I am indeed here to help you improve your home's issues, but I do not require any payment from you. I was entrusted by someone else to come all this way."
The woman from the Lin family looked confused. "Entrusted by someone?"
"Yes," I nodded and asked her, "Do you remember Li the Cripple?"
The Lin family thought for a moment and then said, "I remember him. Although it's been over ten years, I still recall him well. He helped build our house and even chose this land for us. Do you know him?"
I nodded. "Yes, I met him a few days ago, and he asked me to come help with your home's issues."
The Lin family was surprised; clearly, they hadn't expected Li the Cripple to send me to assist them. She was curious about how Li the Cripple knew about their troubles and how he remembered their royal family.
From her words, I could sense her gratitude towards Li the Cripple; she clearly did not realize that he had caused their misfortunes.
Seeing how kind-hearted the Lin family was and how grateful they were towards Li the Cripple made me feel even more sympathetic towards them. However, I did not want to reveal that Li the Cripple had harmed their family. Although he had misunderstood their good intentions in the past, it was ultimately a misunderstanding. Bringing this up now would only hurt their feelings.
Faced with the Lin family's curiosity, I fabricated a story, telling her that Li the Cripple had learned about their situation from another master a few years ago and felt guilty since he built their house and oversaw its Feng Shui. He intended to come himself but found it difficult due to his leg issues; thus, when he met me recently, he asked me to check on them instead.
Lin Family was once again filled with emotion, sighing that all of this might be destined, and there was no blame to be placed on Mr. Li.
In light of Lin Family's great generosity and tolerance, what else could I do but admire them?
At this moment, a voice came from inside the house, asking if there were guests at Lin Family. From the sound of it, which lacked strength, it was clearly Lin Family's husband.
Perhaps Lin Family was in a good mood after hearing that I had come to help her family, as she hurried into the house to tell the man inside that a noble guest had arrived.
Before long, Lin Family carried out a thin man from the Living Room, which startled us. We quickly stepped forward to assist, telling her that there was no need for this and that he could just lie comfortably in bed.
However, the man waved his hand and said, "A distinguished guest has come from afar to help; I am truly moved by your kindness. How can I, as the host, sleep alone in bed?"
The next period of time was spent with this male host accompanying us while Lin Family busied herself preparing dinner.
After explaining my purpose once more to the male host Brother Wang, I told him that the Feng Shui of this house was quite good; it might just be that there were some minor issues with the beams, so with a few adjustments, things would improve.
In fact, I wasn't lying at all; the Li the Cripple had indeed set up a very good piece of Feng Shui for their family. If it weren't for some tampering with the house, they might have already become very wealthy and prosperous; how could they have ended up in such a situation today?
As we talked, I went to find a wooden ladder and set it up against the top beam in the Living Room. Then I took out a piece of red string and a Copper Coin from my bag, threading the Copper Coin onto one end of the red string before climbing up the ladder with it.
Once at the top of the beam, I tied the end of the red string with the Copper Coin to the main beam and then slowly lowered the other end of the red string down. When it was about a meter off the ground, I asked Brother Wang: "Is it on the ground yet?"
