Chapter 43 Fight Paper Figurine
When Zhou Dafu saw me like that, he was taken aback and hurried over to support me, his face full of guilt.
Indeed, I looked terrifying at that moment, completely drained of strength, unable to lift my legs, hunched over, pressing my stomach, and even breathing deeply caused pain in my back. My clothes and the corner of my mouth were covered in blood; I clearly looked like I was hanging by a thread.
Zhou Dafu carried me back home and called an Old Chinese Medicine Doctor to treat my acupoints. Afterward, my back felt somewhat better, and I could finally breathe more easily. I had internal injuries on my back, but fortunately, my ribs were not broken; otherwise, I definitely wouldn't have survived.
After sending off the Old Chinese Medicine Doctor, the entire Zhou Dafu family looked worried, clearly feeling that the current predicament was difficult to endure. After all, their Master was now bedridden; if that Paper Figurine came tonight, they truly wouldn't know what to do.
Seeing them like this made me sigh inwardly because I really had no good solutions at the moment.
Zhou Dafu told me to rest assured and encouraged me not to think too much. They had already prepared themselves mentally; in any case, even if it meant death, they would not hand over their Daughter.
Hearing him say this made me even more uneasy. They had originally placed all their hopes on me, but now I was so severely injured. If the Paper Figurine came, I truly had no confidence in being able to fight it off. The Paper Figurine was very agile, while I could barely walk without pain.
At that moment, Zhou Dafu's Daughter, Zhicheng, walked into the room and said that there seemed to be no turning point in the situation; it might be better to let me go so as not to implicate the whole family in a disaster.
Zhou Dafu immediately interrupted Daughter, firmly disagreeing with her idea. He said that if the Paper Figurine really came tonight, she should escape with me quickly while he and her mother would try their best to hold off the Paper Figurine.
Watching this conversation between father and daughter made me think for a moment, and then I asked Zhicheng: “Are you really willing to give yourself up to that Paper Figurine?”
Zhicheng nodded and said that at this point, she could only blame her fate.
I said, "Well then, if Paper Figurine comes tonight, you should go with Paper Figurine!"
At this moment, not only was Zhou Dafu stunned, but even Zhicheng, who originally intended to go with Paper Figurine, was also taken aback, clearly not expecting me to say that.
Then Zhou Dafu said, "Sir, I only have one Daughter. I wouldn't push her to her death just to save my own life."
Hearing this, Zhicheng asked me curiously after the initial shock, "Did you come up with a good plan, sir?"
Upon hearing this, Zhou Dafu immediately realized he had misunderstood me. He quickly turned to look at me.
I nodded and said, "Actually, it's not a good plan; it's just that we have no other options now, so we have to give it a shot. Whether it works or not depends on fate."
Zhou Dafu became anxious and said, "Sir, please tell us your plan quickly. As long as it doesn't leave us sitting here waiting to die, we'll do anything."
I said, "The nemesis of Paper Figurine is fire. As long as we burn it, everything will be over."
Zhicheng replied, "But it's not easy to burn it. It might run away before we even get close."
I said that a direct attack wouldn't work; Paper Figurine is very agile and clever. That's why I want you to follow it tonight and secretly bring a small bottle of gasoline. When it is unguarded, you can set it on fire.
At this point, I couldn't help but sigh and said, "However, doing this puts you in danger. If you fail in one attempt, it might be very difficult for you to come back."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Dafu immediately said that it was too dangerous and wouldn't work. But after thinking for a moment, Zhicheng said, "This plan is good. Anyway, when Paper Figurine comes tonight, it won't be able to escape. We might as well follow your suggestion; there may still be hope for a complete resolution."
I couldn't help but admire this girl in her twenties; she seemed not only smart but also had some courage.
Zhou Dafu listened to Daughter's words, his mouth moved slightly, and finally, he sighed helplessly. Indeed, apart from this method, he couldn't think of any other way.
With the plan set, Zhou Dafu went to get gasoline. He poured the gasoline into a small glass bottle. Although there wasn't much gasoline, as long as it was splashed on Paper Figurine, and the fire was ignited in time, it would surely burn Paper Figurine to nothing. After all, Paper Figurine was made of paper, and with gasoline, it would catch fire easily. At that point, no matter how powerful it was, its fate would be nothing but ashes.
Everything was ready, and we began preparing for Paper Figurine's arrival that night.
Time passed quickly, and before we knew it, a day had gone by amidst everyone's anxiety and worry. Night fell, and the Zhou family had an early dinner, gathering in the Living Room to wait.
Since I had met Paper Figurine twice before, I hid in my room to avoid raising any suspicions about my presence at the Zhou household.
As the night grew deeper, every minute was torment for Zhou Dafu's family sitting in the Living Room. They dared not speak or even had the mood to talk, while outside, the night had become eerily silent.
Around eleven o'clock at night, suddenly a voice called out for Zhicheng from outside. The voice was faint yet penetrating enough to reach everyone's hearts.
Soon after, footsteps could be heard—soft sounds that were clearly audible in the stillness of the night. Then came a loud "knock knock knock" at the Main Entrance, accompanied by someone shouting into the house: “Zhicheng, come out! Let's go home!”
At that moment, cries from Zhicheng and her Mother echoed inside the house, while Zhou Dafu shouted back: “You get out of here! My Daughter will never go with you!”
Suddenly, laughter came from outside. “What are you saying, old man? I've already married your Daughter, how can she not come with me? Besides, do you really think that just because you locked the Main Entrance, I can't get in?”
Hearing this, I naturally believed that Paper Figurine could easily enter since it had previously passed through walls.
At that moment, inside the house, Zhicheng spoke up through her tears: “Okay, I'll go with you, but please spare my parents and family.”
Upon hearing this, Paper Figurine laughed gleefully and replied: “Alright, my dear wife. As long as you truly come with me, they will naturally be my in-laws. How could I possibly make things difficult for your parents? Come out now.”
Not long after, the living room door was suddenly opened, and it was clear that Zhicheng had gone to answer it. At that moment, Zhou Dafu and his wife in the living room were already in tears.
The Paper Figurine asked Zhicheng if he truly wanted to go back with him.
Zhicheng replied that although he was scared, he didn’t want anything to happen to his family, and since they had indeed gotten married, he accepted his fate.
Upon hearing this, the Paper Figurine was very pleased, laughing heartily, and then led Zhicheng out the door...
Seeing that the Paper Figurine had taken Zhicheng away, I hurriedly ran out of the room, suppressing my pain, and called Zhou Dafu to follow me.
Zhou Dafu was worried about whether I could handle it. I said it wouldn’t kill me; right now, I couldn’t care less about so much as long as Zhicheng was safe.
After saying that, I followed Zhou Dafu...
About half an hour later, we arrived outside Iron Er Dan's house and waited outside. As soon as I heard Zhicheng's voice from inside, I would definitely rush in. After all, it was my idea to let Zhicheng go willingly, so I would rather face danger myself than let such a young girl fall into the hands of the Paper Figurine.
Thus, we waited outside the house about a hundred meters away for nearly half an hour when suddenly a flash of fire appeared in the window, followed by Zhicheng's scream and the Paper Figurine's strange cries...
Seeing this, I immediately dashed out and ran straight toward Iron Er Dan's home. My heart couldn't help but feel excited because that flash of fire clearly indicated that Zhicheng had succeeded.
As Zhou Dafu and I reached Iron Er Dan's door, it suddenly swung open, and Zhicheng rushed out with a terrified expression. Hot on his heels was a burning Paper Figurine who seemed intent on taking Zhicheng down with him even in death!
I would not let that happen; I quickly pulled Zhicheng behind me and brandished the copper sword I had ready in my hand, stabbing fiercely at the burning Paper Figurine. After stabbing it three or four times, I gathered all my strength and delivered a powerful horizontal slash at the Paper Figurine's neck. Its head instantly separated from its body and rolled several meters away like a fireball...
At this moment, looking at the Paper Figurine now lying on the ground, it could no longer make any strange sounds. I knew it had finally been dealt with!
A few minutes later, the flames gradually extinguished, leaving only two piles of ashes on the ground, remnants of the body and head of the Paper Figurine after burning. It had completely turned to dust...
Seeing that the Paper Figurine was finally eliminated, Zhicheng began to cry in fear, embracing Zhou Dafu, both shedding tears.
That night, we returned home. I rested at the Zhou family for two or three days. When I was about to leave, Tie Er Dan returned from his uncle's house. He borrowed several tens of thousands of dollars and brought them to the Zhou family, nervously proposing to Zhou Dafu.
Zhou Dafu did not get angry and chase Tie Er Dan away, nor did he agree; he appeared very troubled. Seeing Zhicheng's hopeful gaze, I couldn't help but walk over to Zhou Dafu and said, "Brother Zhou, I think you should agree to their request! Look at what has happened these past few days; don't you think a family should be content as long as they are safe? You love your daughter so much that you would risk your life for her, and she feels the same way. She is willing to sacrifice herself for her family. Just recently, she put herself in harm's way for you two; do you really want to see her sacrifice her happiness again for your sake?"
At this point, I sighed and continued, "If I'm not mistaken, the night before your daughter’s incident, you and she had an argument about Er Dan. It must have been overheard by that Paper Figurine, which is why it impersonated it to take Zhicheng away for a wedding. Sometimes, one needs to be more open-minded; a family doesn't need to be wealthy or powerful; just being safe and sound is a blessing!"
After hearing my words, Zhou Dafu seemed to understand. He sighed and said, "What you said makes sense. If I had agreed earlier, perhaps this wouldn't have happened. As a father, I don't want to see my daughter suffer because of me again."
With that, he walked over to his daughter and Tie Er Dan and told them that he agreed to their marriage. He would choose an auspicious day for them soon so that Zhicheng could move in and celebrate.
Seeing this young couple finally able to be together happily made me feel joyful and relieved. Indeed, there were so many obstacles between them; it was not easy for them to come together.
Looking at the happy smiles on these two young faces made me think of myself. I couldn't help but smile bitterly; perhaps I would never have such happiness in this lifetime! Thinking of this made me remember Xia Ling and Lin Xiaoqi...
With a long sigh, I left the Zhou family without any destination in mind, unsure of where to go or for whom to live, just walking along the road outside the village alone...
