Chapter 42 Duan Family Parents
Upon arriving at Zhou Dafu's home, I immediately saw a Woman and a young girl embracing each other, crying in anguish. Without needing to think, I could guess that this must be Zhou Dafu's wife and Daughter Zhou Zhicheng.
Seeing his wife and daughter so heartbroken, Zhou Dafu rushed forward and asked what had happened.
When Zhou Dafu's wife saw her husband had returned, she grabbed him and cried, "Dafu, you finally came back! Zhicheng said she was afraid of bringing trouble to our family, so she wants to go back to Er Dan's Home to be that Paper Figurine's wife. I couldn't stop her, sob sob..."
Upon hearing this, Zhou Dafu became anxious. He held his tearful Daughter and advised her, "Why do you have to do this? Don't talk about bringing trouble; you are my Daughter. Even if they want my life, I would never let you go."
Zhicheng was even more distressed, saying, "It's all my fault for bringing trouble to the family. That Paper Figurine is incredibly fierce. If I don't go back tonight, our whole family might suffer. Sob sob... It's all because of my unfilial actions. Please, just let me go..."
Seeing such a sorrowful scene upon arrival made me feel very uncomfortable; tears were almost welling up in my eyes. Parents would willingly sacrifice their lives for their children, while the Daughter, in order to protect herself, was pushing herself into a terrifying abyss. Anyone who witnessed this would find it hard to bear.
I sighed deeply and hurriedly approached Zhicheng, telling her not to be too anxious or sad; things weren't as bad as they seemed.
When Zhicheng heard this, she wiped her tears and looked at me curiously. At that moment, Zhou Dafu remembered me and quickly told his wife and daughter that I was the Master he had invited and that I could surely help their family.
Perhaps they trusted Zhou Dafu's words or perhaps they had no other options left; they suddenly seemed to see a glimmer of hope and urgently pleaded with me to help them through this crisis.
I tried my best to comfort them a bit and stabilize their emotions. Then I asked Zhicheng, when you left, was that Paper Figurine still at home?
Zhicheng nodded and said it should still be there because that Paper Figurine seemed unwilling to come out during the day. When it saw me run out of the house, it didn't chase after me.
After hearing this, I thought for a moment and then said to Zhou Dafu, you should know where Iron Erdan's home is, right?
Zhou Dafu quickly replied, "Yes, it's less than twenty minutes from here."
I nodded and asked him if he dared to accompany me to Er Dan's Home right now so we could meet that Paper Figurine.
Zhou Dafu was taken aback; he seemed surprised. Perhaps he thought dealing with such things should be done through some rituals at home. However, after his surprise faded, he immediately agreed and said he would take me to Er Dan's Home.
This time, besides bringing along my personal talismans for exorcising evil spirits, I also specifically asked Zhou Dafu to prepare two oilcloth sticks since these were the nemesis of the Paper Figurine.
As noon approached, we arrived at Iron Erdan's village. Iron Erdan's home was located at the edge of the village against the mountains; there were hardly any houses nearby, each one quite distant from the others.
As soon as I arrived at Er Dan's front door, I heard the sound of fighting coming from inside, "bang bang bang." Both Zhou Dafu and I were taken aback, thinking, could that Paper Figurine be causing trouble again? So, I told Zhou Dafu to wait for me a bit further away while I charged in with an oilcloth stick...
Upon entering the house, I saw two people dressed in black surrounding the Paper Figurine, and it seemed that the Paper Figurine was at a disadvantage.
As soon as I stepped in, the two black-clad figures paused, then glared at me with anger, as if I had some deep-seated grudge against them. At that moment, I also realized that one of them was a woman.
To be honest, I was very curious at that time. I thought to myself, I'm here to help you fight the Paper Figurine; why do you look like you want to take me down too?
Just then, the woman turned and shouted at me angrily, "Return my son!" Then she lunged at me...
I was taken aback; after all, I don't fight women, and I had no idea how I had offended her. So I quickly dodged and barely avoided her strike. Her outstretched hand hit the wooden door behind me, sending wood chips flying everywhere. I couldn't believe how much force she had used.
Seeing this scene, even a fool would understand that these two black-clad figures were not ordinary. I hurriedly opened my Heavenly Eye and saw that both of them were filled with death energy; they were clearly not living people.
I was startled and thought to myself: how can two dead people move like living beings? Could they be zombies? However, I knew they weren't zombies because it was obvious they had thoughts of their own.
At that moment, I suddenly remembered Duanyang's parents and was shocked. I exclaimed, "You are Duanyang's parents!"
The woman scolded me angrily, "Didn’t expect this, did you? We are still alive! We truly are fated enemies. Our Duanyang had no grievances with you in the past, yet you caused his death. Today, I will use your head to honor my poor son!"
After her outburst, she lunged at me again.
Now I was really panicking. I thought to myself: your son Duanyang wasn't killed by me! I never intended any harm towards him; as long as he let Qianqian go, I planned to let him go too. His death was entirely due to Heavenly Father's decision; it has nothing to do with me.
Although I felt quite affected by Duanyang's death—after all, due to their genuine feelings for each other back then—I never intended to take his life. However, facing Duanyang's parents now, I had no intention of letting them off the hook. Even if they weren't seeking revenge on me now, I'd still want to find them because every day they remained in this world posed a danger to others. Moreover, now that they appeared here clearly aiming to seize the spiritually awakened Paper Figurine to possess it and become true Paper Spirits.
Having realized all this, instead of explaining that Duanyang's death wasn't my fault, I took out a talisman from my bag and hurled it at Duanyang's mother as she charged towards me...
In this initial confrontation, both sides were intent on taking each other's lives. I aimed to dodge and slap the talisman onto her body; however, she reacted quickly and swung her arm down hard. Her sweeping strike hit my arm instead, sending me flying two meters away under the Eight Immortals Table in the living room.
Of course, since my goal was to hit her with the talisman, I couldn't dodge her attack in time. She struck my arm hard while my talisman landed on her chest. Immediately afterward, black smoke erupted from her chest as she was knocked back several meters into the wall; it was clear she was seriously injured.
Looking over at Duanyang's father who seemed ready to help out but found himself unable to subdue the agile Paper Figurine alone—he looked quite worried.
I spat out a mouthful of blood and hurriedly got up from the ground because I knew once Duanyang's father managed to subdue the Paper Figurine, there would be no way for me to take on both of them.
Standing up from the ground, I pulled out a copper coin sword from my bag and prepared another spell while charging towards Duanyang's mother again...
The parents of Duanyang are half corpse and half ghost; their bodies have long since died, but their souls remain within. In simple terms, they are similar to corpses possessed by evil spirits, strong yet fearful of yin-yang techniques. This is why when I went to the Duanyang family, they immediately fled.
Returning to the matter at hand, I held the Ghost-Slaying Sword in my hand, and Duanyang's mother showed signs of fear. However, I would not give her a chance to breathe. I charged forward with the sword raised and struck at her chest. Instinctively, she could only raise her arm to block her chest, and the sword struck her arm, sending her flying once again.
She crashed into the wall at the top of the living room with a loud bang, causing the earthen wall to shake slightly.
At that moment, she was unable to get up from the ground; the soul within her corpse had suffered a severe blow. Without pausing, I pressed my advantage and rushed forward, raising the Ghost-Slaying Sword to stab directly at her chest...
But just as the sword was about to pierce her chest, a sudden gust of cold wind hit me from behind, startling me. I realized her husband had come to help. However, it was too late; I felt a powerful kick strike my back, sending me flying.
I felt a tightness in my chest and tasted blood in my mouth as I coughed it out. It splattered on the ground, and I nearly fainted.
Using all my strength, I crawled up from the ground. By this time, the two of them had already rushed out the door and disappeared.
Looking at the Paper Figurine, it stood not far from me, grinning oddly before passing through the wall and vanishing as well...
Seeing that they had all fled, I slumped back down onto the ground. As soon as the danger passed and my body relaxed, I felt intense pain all over, especially in my back; it felt like several ribs might have been broken.
However, I knew that I needed to resolve the Paper Figurine issue quickly. The fact that Duanyang's parents—those half-ghost half-corpse beings—were so difficult to deal with meant that if they managed to control that spirit-summoning Paper Figurine first and turned it into a true Paper Figurine, it would be too late for me. Perhaps I'd be the first to die because they would believe that Duanyang was killed by me.
After resting on the ground for over half an hour and regaining a bit of strength, I finally walked out of the iron Er Dan's house and met up with Zhou Dafu, who had been waiting for me at a distance.
