Chapter Eighteen Haunted House 0

Duan Yang's home is more accurately described as being deep in the mountains rather than in the suburbs, because although it is not too far from the city, it is situated in a large mountain range. 0

This mountain has not been developed; although there are people living within it, they are mostly local farmers who have distanced themselves from city life. In such mountainous areas outside small counties, even if they are close to the county seat, few people venture into the mountains on a regular basis. 0

After driving for over half an hour, we finally arrived at the Duan Family Villa mentioned by Wang Qingshan. 0

We had entered deep into the forest, where human presence was very sparse, with farmhouses scattered far apart to the east and west. 0

Although it was deep in the woods, this villa was indeed as grand as Wang Qingshan had described. Behind the tall walls was a large garden, and this villa was situated within that garden. However, due to its age, the exterior walls of the villa had become weathered and worn, with white paint covered in moss and dark stains from years of exposure to wind and rain. 0

The car stopped at the entrance of the villa, where we found the iron gate tightly closed. After getting out of the car, Wang Qingshan ran over to the gate and pressed the doorbell while calling out into the gate, asking if anyone was there. 0

After getting out of the car, I walked over and looked at the iron gate. It was already rusted through, secured by a similarly rusted padlock that held it shut tightly. 0

Seeing this, I said to Wang Qingshan, "No need to shout; there's no one inside." 0

Wang Qingshan looked puzzled and said, "No one? Could they all be out?" 0

I shook my head and replied, "I think this old house has been unoccupied for quite some time." 0

Wang Qingshan grew anxious and said, "That's impossible! I was just here not long ago; their parents were home!" 0

I sighed and noticed he still didn't believe me. I pointed to the heavily rusted padlock on the gate and said, "Look at how rusted this lock is; how could anyone be living here?" 0

Wang Qingshan's face turned pale with fear as he pointed at the imposing house and exclaimed in horror, "Master, are you saying that everyone I saw that day... were ghosts?" 0

"I suppose that's likely. Otherwise, this lock wouldn't be rusted like this; even the keyhole is blocked by rust. This old house hasn't been lived in for at least several years," I replied noncommittally. 0

Wang Qingshan remained engulfed in fear and asked why he hadn't noticed anything unusual when he visited before. He recalled that Duan Yang's parents were indeed home at that time, and he had even eaten lunch there and chatted with them; they certainly didn't seem like dead people. 0

I didn't discuss this matter with him any further, just told him that no one could possibly live in this house. 0

At that moment, a villager approached us. Upon seeing us standing in front of the Villa, he looked quite surprised, examining us as if we were some kind of aliens. 0

After staring at us for a while, he hurried past, but after taking a few steps, he turned back and walked up to us, asking, "Are you planning to buy this old house?" 0

We shook our heads, thinking that this person had intentionally turned back. Did he have something to tell us about this house? 0

Sure enough, upon seeing us shake our heads, he said, "If you're not buying the house, you should leave quickly and not linger around here." 0

Wow, this person is really overbearing. Are we not even allowed to take a stroll here? 0

Seeing that we had no intention of leaving, he sighed and said, "Why won't you listen when I tell you to leave? I'm doing this for your own good. You can't stay here; otherwise, if trouble arises, don't blame me for not warning you." 0

After saying this, he seemed very angry for not being listened to and turned around to leave. 0

Hearing this, I quickly took a couple of steps after him and said, "Sir, you've misunderstood. We're here for a reason. You just mentioned that we can't stay here or we'll get into trouble. I wonder what you mean by that?" 0

The villager glanced at the old house and then mysteriously pulled us several meters away before whispering to us that we shouldn't come here because this Villa is not clean! 0

Upon hearing this, I immediately became curious and thought that this Villa was indeed unusual. So I asked him what exactly was wrong with the Villa. 0

Initially, the villager didn't want to say much and insisted that I shouldn't inquire too much. He simply told us not to stay there and to leave as soon as possible; anything else would be useless. 0

However, after my persistent questioning, the villager eventually shared what he knew with us. 0

According to him, this Villa was built over twenty years ago. However, in those twenty-plus years, anyone who lived there either died or was injured; nothing good ever happened. 0

The villager said that it used to be a Cemetery. Villagers nearby often saw flickering Ghost Fires at night. At first, they were startled by it but eventually got used to it. Until 1992, an Outsider Merchant bought the land intending to build a Villa for himself. However, during construction, a worker accidentally fell from the Second Floor and mysteriously died a few days later. After the Villa was completed, the merchant dared not live there and never returned; thus, the Villa remained vacant. It stayed empty for two or three years until the Village Chief received a letter from the merchant expressing his wish to rent out the Villa through the Village Chief for public use of the rent money as long as it wouldn't remain empty. 0

Upon hearing such a good deal, the Village Chief naturally agreed. However, after renting out the Villa, strange incidents began to occur one after another... 0

On the night the first batch of tenants moved in, they always heard someone crying and felt like someone was scattering ash on the bed. The next day, they requested to check out. The Village Chief found this very strange and immediately gathered a dozen brave villagers to stay there for a night. However, when they woke up the next morning, they discovered that everyone had slept under the bed, and the bed was covered in dust... 0

After this incident, the villagers unanimously believed that this Villa was unclean. However, the Village Chief thought it was just a small issue and, to avoid affecting the rental situation of the Villa, he instructed the villagers not to spread the news. 0

Subsequently, the Village Chief rented the Villa to a group of Outsiders at an extremely low price. Unexpectedly, another incident occurred; one family living in the building was completely wiped out. When the villagers discovered that this family had met with an accident, they found all four members hanging dead inside the Villa—some in the Living Room and others in their rooms—dying in a horrific manner. 0

In no time, panic spread among the villagers, and the Village Chief realized the seriousness of the situation. From then on, no one ever lived in that building again... 0

Although the Villa was no longer inhabited, strange noises never ceased. From that point on, every night, various bizarre sounds would echo from within the Villa. Whenever villagers passed by at night, they often saw shadows moving inside as if people still lived there. Sometimes, lights would even be seen on in this seemingly unoccupied Villa late at night. Some villagers claimed to have heard voices talking or children crying inside; in short, it was never quiet at night. Therefore, after that, villagers dared not pass by at night. 0

The Villa before me turned out to be a haunted house, and I never expected it to be so severe. I looked around; who could deny it? This Villa indeed exuded a chilling aura. 0

It was dusk when this old Villa stood quietly isolated on a desolate mountain. From afar, it emanated an inexplicable eerie feeling, cold as an ice cellar with no signs of life. 0

Just when I thought everything had been said, that villager continued speaking. He said that after that incident, the Villa remained vacant for quite some time. However, two years ago, the owner of this Villa—the same outsider merchant—returned with his family and moved back in after getting the keys from the Village Chief. 0

At that time, not only did we villagers advise them against moving in, but even the Village Chief tried to persuade them. Yet they did not heed our warnings and ultimately decided to stay. 0

Upon hearing this, I curiously asked what happened to them afterward. 0
