At the dinner party, Xu Qian was having a pleasant conversation with President Wang from Kang Nai. President Wang glanced at me and smiled, "I've heard for a long time that President Fu got married to a business elite. Seeing you today, it really is a different reaction."
I smiled and raised my glass, "Thank you, President Wang."
"President Wang is an old friend of my father's," Xu Qian looked at me and said, "Kang Nai was also one of my father's old clients back then."
I nodded, "I know."
Kang Nai is an established enterprise. Although it has been suppressed by the Fu family over the years, its strength should not be underestimated.
Xu Qian looked at me and said, "Kang Nai contacted me earlier, saying they wanted to collaborate with Qin. I refused and thought I should ask for your opinion."
"I don't like working with President Wang," I lowered my gaze.
"Is it because of him?"
"Yes," I nodded, "Working with him isn't beneficial for me."
Xu Qian looked at me and suddenly laughed, "What if I collaborate with Kang Nai?"
I raised my eyes and smiled back, "Then I'll withdraw."
Xu Qian raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything.
I felt tired and told Xu Qian that I was going to rest in the booth. He had to socialize for now and couldn't pay attention to me.
I was quite comfortable; I played on my phone for a while in the booth and then took a nap. When I woke up, the dinner party was nearing its end.
I stretched lazily, got up from the booth, and planned to wash my face in the restroom to freshen up.
As soon as I walked into the restroom, I heard a familiar voice.
"Liu Yajie."
That voice…
I froze and turned around abruptly. Zhou Hong stood in front of me wearing a wine-red gown, her makeup exquisite but her expression cold.
She looked at me, her red lips slightly parted: "Long time no see."
I stared at her, momentarily unsure how to respond.
Zhou Hong was Xu Qian's ex-girlfriend. She was also a former… friend of mine. Zhou Hong is an actress who recently rose to fame with a historical fantasy drama, quickly becoming a top-tier star.
"Hello." I looked at her, unsure of what to say.
Zhou Hong looked at me and suddenly smiled, "Liu Yajie, you’ve always been like this, so calm as if nothing matters to you."
"Do you know? I really hate this side of you."
"We clearly talk about everything, yet you turn around and try to seduce my boyfriend. How long were you planning to hide this from me if I hadn't found out?"
I pressed my lips together, "Ming Xia, Xu Qian and I are innocent."
"Innocent?" Zhou Hong laughed as if she had heard a joke. "Innocent people don’t go abroad together for studies. Innocent people don’t get engaged the moment he returns home."
"Liu Yajie, do you dare say you have no other feelings for him?"
I looked at her, momentarily unsure of how to respond.
Zhou Hong looked at me and suddenly laughed, "Of course you don’t dare."
"Liu Yajie, you always say you consider me a friend, but in reality? When have you ever truly looked at me?"
"You always act so high and mighty as if nothing can catch your eye, but in reality? Aren't you also relying on men to get where you are today?"
"If it weren't for Xu Qian, do you think you would have achieved what you have today?"
"Liu Yajie, you're really hypocritical."
I couldn't take it anymore and interrupted her, "Ming Xia, we haven't seen each other in a long time. I don't want to argue with you."
"Oh really?" Zhou Hong looked at me, "I thought you didn't care about me at all."
"You always ignore me; it was true before, it is true now, and it will be true in the future."
"Liu Yajie, I really dislike you."
I looked at her, momentarily unsure of what to say.
When Zhou Hong was with Xu Qian, I had a good relationship with her. But later, after Xu Qian broke up with her and proposed to me upon returning home, we naturally got engaged. Since then, Zhou Hong changed.
She hates me.
She thinks I stole Xu Qian from her.
I felt we needed to cool down and think things through, so I hadn’t reached out to her actively. But now it seems I haven’t done what a friend should do.
I looked at her and softly said, "Ming Xia, I don’t know what I did that made you misunderstand me, but I apologize. I'm sorry."
"I don’t need your apology!" Zhou Hong looked at me fiercely. "Liu Yajie, I absolutely do not need your apology!"
"I just wish you would disappear from my life!"
I looked at her, momentarily at a loss for words.
It wasn't until Zhou Hong left that I sighed and turned to walk into the bathroom.
After washing my face, I felt much more awake.
Looking at myself in the mirror, I pressed my lips together, feeling a bit lost.
Was I wrong?
Perhaps.
Maybe from the very beginning, I shouldn't have become friends with Zhou Hong.
Maybe from the very beginning, I shouldn't have let Xu Qian get close to me.
Maybe from the very beginning, I should have kept my distance from them.
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, composed myself, and turned to leave the bathroom.
As soon as I stepped out, I bumped into someone.
"Sister."
That voice...
I froze and quickly looked up.
Li Rong stood in front of me, completely soaked, looking at me with a pitiful expression: "Sister, you finally came out."
I was shocked: "What are you doing here?"
"I've been waiting for you," he said, looking at me. "Sister, you didn't even look at me."
"You've been waiting here for me?" I stared at Li Rong in disbelief.
"Yeah." Li Rong nodded. "I was worried something might happen to you."
I pressed my lips together, unsure of what to say.
Li Rong's clothes were still dripping water, and his lips were blue and purple from the cold; it was clear he had been waiting for a long time.
Looking at him made my heart ache a little.
