The night was dark and windy, perfect for committing murder and arson.
"Princess, do we really have to do this?" Xiao Lu looked at me with a worried expression.
"Yes." I nodded solemnly.
Today, Li Jue returned very late, and Shen Zizhao was also confined, making it the perfect time to sneak into her chamber to gather information. I asked Xiao Lu for some medicine that could induce a fainting spell; although she was reluctant, she still gave it to me. Xiao Lu always complained verbally but acted honestly.
I quietly approached Shen Zizhao's palace and had Xiao Lu blow the medicine into the room through a bamboo tube. Moments later, several maids inside fell unconscious. Xiao Lu and I tiptoed in; Shen Zizhao was already weakly leaning against the bedside.
I had specially dressed up today to look fierce, which startled Xiao Lu into a scream. I shot her a glare, and she covered her mouth while helping Shen Zizhao up.
"Who... who are you?" Shen Zizhao looked at me in terror, her speech slightly stuttering.
"Return my life!" I glared at her fiercely, "I died such a miserable death!"
"Ahhh—" Shen Zizhao screamed in fright, "It's not my fault! I didn't kill you!"
"Then who did?" I crouched down and stared at her intently.
"It was... it was..." Shen Zizhao's eyes darted around, not daring to meet my gaze.
I raised my hand and grasped her chin, "Since you refuse to speak, then you can accompany me in death!"
"No! I don't want to!" Shen Zizhao struggled desperately, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Please forgive me! I was also used by someone; I didn't want this! I'm sorry..."
Tears streamed down Shen Zizhao's face, making her look pitiful. However, I wasn't swayed by such tactics.
I glared at her fiercely, "My life is gone just like that; tell me how you will repay me!"
With a sinister smile, I took out a pill from my pocket and stuffed it into Shen Zizhao's mouth.
"What did you make me take?" Shen Zizhao looked at me in horror.
"Of course it's something good." I sneered.
This was the Soul-Dispersing Pill; once taken, it would leave her disoriented and answer any question posed to her.
Shen Zizhao looked at me in fear, "What... what do you want from me?"
"I don't want anything." I coldly cupped her face in my hands, "I just want to give you a chance to tell the truth; otherwise, I'll kill you."
Shen Zizhao was so frightened that tears flowed down her cheeks, "No, I don't want to die."
"Then will you tell the truth?"
"I will, I will." Shen Zizhao nodded frantically.
"Good." I released her, "I'll ask you one question; you only need to nod or shake your head."
"Okay."
"Is it Crown Prince Shen Huaimo?"
Shen Zizhao shook her head.
"Is it the Queen?"
Shen Zizhao shook his head.
"Is it Father Emperor?"
Shen Zizhao continued to shake his head.
"Is it Li Jue?"
Shen Zizhao still shook his head.
"None of them?" I frowned, "Could it be you yourself?"
Shen Zizhao shook his head frantically.
If it's not these people, then who could it be?
Suddenly, a name came to my mind, the one person I least wanted to suspect.
"Is it Li Jue?" I asked.
Shen Zizhao hesitated for a moment, was about to nod when the beaded curtain behind him suddenly rustled.
A cold draft swept through the hall, and I couldn't help but shiver.
"Ah ah ah ah ah—" Shen Zizhao screamed, "A ghost!"
I turned to look, and a sword gleaming with cold light was rushing towards me.
My heart sank; it was over, there was no way to avoid it.
The icy long sword pressed against my cheek, its chill paralyzing me with fear.
"You..." I forced myself to stay calm, "Who are you?"
"You don't need to know who I am, Your Highness." His voice was low and cold, "Just know that today is your day of death."
"But..." I swallowed hard, "I haven't even seen your face; you can still leave now."
"Heh." He sneered coldly, "Do you think I'm here for the Second Princess?"
"Isn't that so?"
"Of course not." His voice was frigid, "I'm here for you."
"For me?" I was surprised, "I have no grievances or grudges with you; why are you looking for me?"
"Prepare to die!" He didn't want to say more; the sword slashed horizontally towards me.
Instinctively, I raised my leg to sweep at him, but his swordsmanship was extremely precise and only severed my hair.
"You know martial arts?" He seemed a bit surprised.
"A little," I turned to face him but found that his lightness skill was exceptionally high; my close combat techniques were completely useless.
All I could see was that he wore white clothes, making him stand out in this deep palace courtyard.
I squinted my eyes, trying hard to see his face beneath the mask, but he suddenly raised his hand and a long needle shot straight towards my face.
I awkwardly dodged; the long needle embedded itself into the pillar.
He truly wanted my life.
I began to retreat while saying, "Let me go; I can offer you more benefits."
He remained unmoved.
"I am a princess, I have the support of the world and the favor of the emperor. Aside from Nation, there is nothing I cannot provide."
"What I want is Nation."
We were at a stalemate like this; he chased, I fled, he struck, I blocked.
Although my close combat skills were impressive, I found myself at a loss against someone skilled in lightness techniques.
"Why do you have to kill me?" I began to regret sending away all the guards from Shen Zizhao's palace earlier.
"I hate the Xiao Family, is that not enough?"
"But if you kill me, there are still many children from the Xiao Family, and Nation will not belong to you."
"I don't care."
"If you kill me, you won't get Nation either. Isn't that a loss for you?"
"..."
He fell silent, but his attacks became increasingly fierce.
I covered my head and fled; the fear of almost being pierced like a sieve surged back, making my limbs weak.
As I ran, I looked for something to throw at him. "Don't you want Nation? If you kill me, you'll get nothing!"
He ignored me and continued to chase and strike.
Despair washed over me as I looked around; there were potted plants everywhere. I simply hid beside one of them. "Do I look like a potted plant?"
He paused for a moment, then swung his sword without hesitation.
I quickly dodged but was still struck on the shoulder, blood gushing out immediately.
"Your Highness, prepare to die." He approached me with a cold smile, raising his sword, but suddenly stopped.
"You..." He looked at me with uncertainty.
"That's right." I grinned, "You just hit me, and I sprayed the bamboo tube hidden in my mouth; now the poison powder is rushing towards your face. You are about to die."
He hesitated for a moment, then suddenly withdrew his sword, its tip pointing to the ground, silent.
"You must be feeling numb all over and having difficulty breathing; those are symptoms of severe poisoning," I kindly reminded him. "If you run now, you might still save your life."
He paused again and began to step outside.
I sighed in relief but then heard his voice beside me, "This time is just a lesson, Your Highness, you know what to do."
