Li Yanqiu and Han Li had just finished their meal when they received a message from the command center that a Golden Eagle had gone missing from the West Lake Zoo.
"Let's go, another Golden Eagle," Li Yanqiu said, rubbing her forehead. She had barely slept the night before and felt utterly exhausted. However, she mustered her energy and headed to the West Lake Zoo with Han Li.
Upon arriving at the zoo entrance, they noticed a long line of visitors waiting to buy tickets.
"So many people," Han Li remarked, frowning at the ticket booth.
"Let's go directly to the security office," Li Yanqiu suggested.
They arrived at the security office, presented their credentials, and a security guard led them to meet the director.
The director, a middle-aged man named Zhao, took them to see the cage from which the Golden Eagle had been stolen.
"It’s right here," Director Zhao pointed to an iron cage atop a rockery. The cage was covered with a layer of wire mesh that showed signs of being torn apart.
"The Golden Eagle was dragged out from here," Director Zhao explained.
"Why are the tear marks so smooth?" Li Yanqiu asked, examining the surrounding damage with a furrowed brow. The tears were very neat and did not appear to be made by human hands.
"I don’t know," Director Zhao shook his head.
"Then how was the Golden Eagle dragged out?" Li Yanqiu looked at Director Zhao.
"Uh..." Director Zhao was taken aback and didn't know how to respond.
"Let's check the surveillance footage first," Li Yanqiu suggested.
"Sure, please follow me," Director Zhao quickly nodded.
The three of them entered the surveillance room, and under the director's operation, they watched the footage from three o'clock in the morning.
At 3:21 AM, the wire mesh beside the rockery suddenly began to shake. Then, it was torn apart, and the Golden Eagle inside was dragged down. The entire process was very brief, lasting only a few seconds.
"This..." Li Yanqiu stared at the surveillance footage, her eyes filled with confusion. She hadn't expected that the Golden Eagle had been taken away in such a manner.
"Why would it drag the Golden Eagle down?" Li Yanqiu's mind was filled with questions.
She carefully observed the surveillance footage, trying to find some clues. However, she found nothing. "It seems to be avoiding the cameras?" Li Yanqiu suddenly thought of a possibility. As she continued to watch the footage, she noticed that the Golden Eagle indeed seemed to be evading the surveillance while moving.
"Why is it avoiding the cameras?" Li Yanqiu was filled with confusion. After thinking for a while without any leads, she had to temporarily give up. "Director, have there been any other animals missing from the zoo recently?" Li Yanqiu looked at Director Zhao.
"No," Director Zhao shook his head.
"Oh," Li Yanqiu felt somewhat disappointed. "If you have any news, please inform us as soon as possible," she said.
"Sure," Director Zhao nodded quickly.
"Let's go," Li Yanqiu said, looking at Han Li. Just as they stepped out of the surveillance room, a zookeeper approached them.
"Hey, officer, are you here again to investigate the Golden Eagle's disappearance?" the zookeeper asked.
"Yes," Li Yanqiu nodded.
"Ah, that Golden Eagle really is unfortunate; it got stolen by something," the zookeeper sighed.
"Do you know what took it?" Li Yanqiu asked.
"I don't know either," the zookeeper shook his head. "But I was wondering if what took the Golden Eagle might be related to whatever killed that nest of mice back in January."
"What? Mice were killed in January?" Li Yanqiu raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, all those mice died, their tails tangled together in a very strange shape," the zookeeper said.
"Can you take me to see it?" Li Yanqiu's interest was piqued.
"I can, but those mice have already been buried," the zookeeper replied.
"That's fine; just take me there," Li Yanqiu insisted.
"Okay, follow me," the zookeeper nodded. He led Li Yanqiu and Han Li to a small grove and pointed to a patch of soil ahead. "The mice are buried right here."
Li Yanqiu and Han Li exchanged a glance, walked over, and began to dig into the soil.
Before long, they had unearthed a pit containing more than a dozen dead mice. The bodies of these mice had already decayed, but their tails were tightly intertwined, creating a very eerie sight.
"Just as I thought," Li Yanqiu mused as she looked at the mice in the pit. She carefully examined the corpses and noticed that their tails were remarkably neat, as if they had been cut by something.
"What is this?" Li Yanqiu suddenly discovered a piece of flesh.
"I don't know; I found this piece of flesh too, but I have no idea what it is," the caretaker said.
"This piece of flesh has many bite marks on it; it must belong to some carnivorous animal," Li Yanqiu concluded after a thorough inspection.
"So, a carnivorous animal killed these mice?" Han Li asked.
"That seems to be the case," Li Yanqiu nodded.
"But why would it kill these mice?" Han Li questioned, puzzled.
"Perhaps these mice invaded its territory," Li Yanqiu speculated after some thought.
"Then why didn't it eat them?" Han Li asked again.
"Maybe it didn't want to reveal its presence," Li Yanqiu guessed.
"Then why did it kill the mice?" Han Li continued to inquire.
"Perhaps it wanted to use these mice as a warning to other animals not to approach its territory," Li Yanqiu explained.
"But why would it do that?" Han Li asked in confusion.
"Maybe it has its own motives," Li Yanqiu replied.
"What motives?" Han Li asked curiously.
"I don't know," Li Yanqiu shook her head.
"Do these findings help us solve the case?" Han Li asked.
"Maybe they do," Li Yanqiu said uncertainly.
"What should we do now?" Han Li inquired.
