As time passed, my younger siblings gradually grew up and began to show a sense of entitlement towards the family's resources. First, my brother insisted that our parents buy him the latest smartphone, and then my sister nagged them for a high-spec computer, claiming she wanted to open an Online Store. These two expenses left our parents feeling overwhelmed.
However, in the end, they gritted their teeth and fulfilled their requests. After all, both children were their biological offspring, and they believed that their children's future would surely bring them great benefits. Meanwhile, I remained like a transparent person, ignored by them. Even when I stayed up late studying until dawn, they would hurl harsh words at me.
"What are you studying for? Hurry up and go to bed; you have work tomorrow!"
"Exactly, you're just a girl. Why do you need to learn so much? Aren't you just going to get married?"
Such indifference only strengthened my resolve to become independent.
Another weekend came, and our family of four sat down together for dinner. I thought it was just an ordinary gathering, but little did I know that my parents intended for me to overhear their conversation.
"Xiao Xi, how much does it cost to open an Online Store?" my mother asked while serving food to Shen Xi.
Shen Xi glanced at me with a smug smile and replied, "Mom, don't worry; I've almost gathered enough money for the Online Store."
"Oh?" My mother seemed surprised. "Where did you get the money?"
Shen Xi chuckled and said, "I borrowed a bit from my classmates, and with my allowance this month, it’s enough."
"That won't do!" My mother frowned. "Your monthly allowance is only a thousand yuan; that's not enough!"
Saying this, my mother looked at my father and said, "Let's give the kids some more money."
My father shook his head and sighed, "Where am I supposed to get money? You know that."
Upon hearing this, my mother's expression dimmed.
At that moment, Shen Xi suddenly said, "Mom, actually I have an idea."
"What idea?" My mother quickly asked.
Shen Xi glanced at me and smiled, "I could ask my sister to lend me some money; she earns quite a bit from her job each month."
Hearing this, my parents' gazes fell on me. I lowered my head, quietly eating my food, as if I hadn't heard their conversation. However, their discussion became increasingly clear, seemingly intended for me to overhear.
"Hey, your sister works hard for her money; she has to go to school during the day and then work at night..."
"Yeah, it's not easy for your sister to earn money. You can't always rely on her."
"But..." Shen Xi lowered her head, her voice tinged with tears. "I really want to open my own online store..."
Upon hearing this, my parents exchanged glances, as if they had made a decision. My mother put down her chopsticks and looked at me.
"Xixi, did you hear that?"
I calmly picked up some food with my chopsticks and ignored them. Seeing my lack of response, my mother finally couldn't hold back and directly asked, "Xixi, can you take out some money to help your sister?"
I set down my chopsticks, raised my head, and looked straight into my mother's eyes, coldly saying, "This is my money; I have my own plans."
At my words, surprise spread across the faces of my parents and Shen Xi. They probably didn't expect that I, who had always been seen as soft and easygoing, would say something like this.
"What... what did you say?" My mother stared at me wide-eyed as if she didn't recognize me anymore.
I took a deep breath and repeated myself: "I said this is my money; I have my own plans."
"You..." My mother trembled with anger. "What’s wrong with you? Why have you become so selfish?"
I let out a cold laugh. "Selfish? Mom, have you ever thought about why I have to work so hard?"
"Is it so I can pay for my own tuition?"
"No, that's not it," my mother explained. "Your dad and I just hope you can help support the family..."
"Support?" I couldn't help but laugh again. "Mom, have you ever thought about why I should support you?"
