From that day on, Cui Lidong seemed to have noticed my change. He began to look at me more intently, as if trying to see right through me. He casually mentioned, "You really like wearing floral dresses lately." I didn't pay much attention and just replied, "Isn't it nice?" He nodded, "It's nice." Whenever he looked at me in the floral dress, there would always be a glimmer of light in his eyes. That gaze was very much like Chen Shan's.
I enjoyed wearing the floral dress; even if I was just a stand-in, I wanted to see that similar figure. But I was also quite annoyed with myself. Cui Lidong and I were merely using each other. I thought of Chen Shan, longed for Chen Shan, and saw only Chen Shan. Yet he looked at me, or rather through me to see someone else. We deceived each other and concealed our true feelings.
Most of the time, I thought about Chen Shan. I thought of that proud young man and how he humbly called my name. But I would never have the chance to make amends or even see him again. Cui Lidong called me: "Chen Qian, are you going home?" I softly replied, "Yeah." His voice was low: "Be safe." I smiled lightly: "Okay." In truth, I didn't want to go back; it was filled with memories of Chen Shan.
Going back will only make my heart ache more.
But Mom misses me, and I miss her too.
After sitting in the car all day, I finally returned to the familiar small town.
Mom was busy in the kitchen, and I helped her out.
While washing vegetables, she asked me, "Chen Qian, have you been in touch with Xiao Mang recently?"
My heart trembled, and I didn't say anything.
Mom continued, "You two have always had a good relationship since childhood. Xiao Mang is excellent and now studying in the capital. You should keep in touch with him and not become distant."
I responded absentmindedly, but inside I felt quite uneasy.
After dinner, I sat on the sofa peeling an apple for Mom.
She sat next to me and suddenly asked, " Xiao Qian, do you have a boyfriend?"
My hand paused while peeling the apple, then I softly said, "Yes."
Mom's eyes lit up: "When will you bring him home for me to see?"
I took a bite of the apple; it was sweet, but not sweet enough for my heart.
I casually replied, "Wait until he has a break."
"Okay, okay," Mom responded repeatedly, clearly very happy.
At that moment, the doorbell rang suddenly.
Mom went to open the door.
I heard her surprised voice: "Xiao Mang, you're here."
My hand holding the apple trembled violently as if my heart was tightly gripped by a hand.
I slowly looked up and saw that familiar figure.
He had grown taller and even more handsome.
He was holding a box of oranges and smiling as he said, "Auntie, our oranges are ripe; I brought some for you to try."
Mom smiled as she took them: "Come in and sit for a while."
He followed Mom inside and when he saw me, his eyes flickered: "Sister, you're back."
That familiar "Sister" made my heart feel a bit dazed.
He seemed to still be him; I seemed to still be me.
Nothing had changed.
Mom brought the oranges into the kitchen and cut a plate to bring out for us.
She called out to Chen Shan, "Xiao Mang, eat some oranges."
Chen Shan obediently took a piece and said, "Auntie, you all eat. I have to go back; my dad is still waiting for me."
Mom quickly said, " Xiao Qian, go see Xiao Mang off."
I mechanically stood up and walked him to the door.
We didn't say a word along the way.
When we reached the door, he turned to look at me and said, "Sister, you can go back now."
I nodded gently and didn't say anything more.
I watched him leave until his figure disappeared before I turned back.
As soon as I entered, Mom asked, " Xiao Qian, why is your face so pale? Are you feeling unwell?"
I forced a smile and said, "Maybe I'm just tired from the ride."
Mom poured me a glass of water and said, "Then hurry up and rest for a bit."
I took a sip of water and said, "Mom, I'm going out for a walk."
Mom was taken aback for a moment and said, "Come back early."
I walked out of the house and slowly strolled along the familiar street.
On both sides of the street were old residential buildings.
The walls were covered with climbing ivy, lush and vibrant.
This street was one that Chen Shan had walked with me countless times.
Whenever I was feeling down, he would buy me a popsicle.
They cost fifty cents each; I only wanted the orange flavor while he preferred grape.
He said, "Sister, do you know? It's said that if you eat popsicles with someone you like on the first day of May, you'll be together forever."
I took a bite of my popsicle and shot him a glance: "That's nonsense."
He laughed with his eyes crinkling: "Anyway, I want to eat them with you in the future."
