Xin Ping boarded the airport bus, and only after getting on did she realize she didn't know where to find Sun Ming. She leaned against the window and dozed off.
In her daze, she heard someone say, "Central Street, the final stop has arrived."
Central Street?
Xin Ping jolted awake. She remembered that Sun Ming had once told her that Central Street was his favorite place. She decided to get off and take a look.
After getting off, she stood on the street, watching the bustling crowd and the exotic streets around her. Suddenly, she felt an unprecedented sense of confusion. She didn't know where to look for Sun Ming.
As she gazed at the crowd, she suddenly collapsed onto the ground and cried out, "Excuse me, do you know Sun Ming?"
"Do you know where he is?"
"Who can tell me where he has gone?"
People around her turned to look, staring at her as if she were crazy.
Ignoring them, Xin Ping continued to cry, "Please, tell me where Sun Ming is."
"I really want to see him."
"I really love him."
After an unknown amount of time, a local approached her and asked in broken Mandarin, "The Sun Ming you mentioned, is he from Harbin?"
Xin Ping nodded, "Yes, he is in Harbin."
"Do you know which hospital he is in?"
The person shook their head, "I don't know."
A glimmer of disappointment flashed in Xin Ping's eyes. The person thought for a moment and said, "Why don't you try going to Harbin Medical University Affiliated Second Hospital?"
"I've heard that their orthopedics department is quite famous."
Xin Ping's eyes lit up. "Orthopedics?"
"Is Sun Ming an orthopedic patient?"
The person smiled slightly. "I wouldn't know."
"I just heard that they are quite good at treating orthopedics there."
Xin Ping nodded. "Thank you."
She took a taxi to Harbin Medical University Affiliated Second Hospital, walked into the inpatient building, and approached the nurse's station.
"Excuse me, is there a patient named Sun Ming here?"
The nurse glanced at her. "Who are you to him?"
Xin Ping replied softly, "I am his girlfriend."
The nurse looked at her with a somewhat complicated expression. "You... you came too late."
Xin Ping's expression changed. "What do you mean?"
"Did he... did he get discharged?"
The nurse shook her head. "No."
"He... he's no longer here."
Xin Ping felt as if she had been struck by lightning. "No longer here?"
"What do you mean?"
The nurse lowered her head. "He... passed away."
Xin Ping trembled all over, her eyes wide open. "Impossible."
"He... he was fine before."
"He... he even called me..."
The nurse sighed. "I'm sorry, I don't know the details."
"You can ask his attending physician."
Xin Ping stood there, as if her soul had been lost.
She couldn't accept this fact.
She wondered, how could this be possible?
How could such a good Sun Ming, such a kind Sun Ming, have passed away?
She stood there, feeling cold all over.
A buzzing filled her ears, and her mind went blank.
After an unknown amount of time, she felt dizzy and then collapsed to the ground.
When she woke up, she found herself lying in a hospital bed, covered with a blanket, and her left hand was hooked up to an IV.
She picked up her phone and frantically called Sun Ming and sent messages.
But there was nothing.
Nothing at all.
Tears streamed down her face.
She wished Sun Ming would reply to her messages.
Even just a breakup message would be fine.
But there was nothing.
She wished she could return to that dream.
She wished she could die alongside Sun Ming.
She would rather die by his side than live alone in solitude.
For the next five days, Xin Ping stayed in a hotel, living a lifeless existence.
Her heart ached, but there was no one to confide in.
Her longing grew like wild grass, crazily spreading in her heart.
