In the days that followed, Ye Chen became increasingly busy.
He spent all day at the hospital and the law firm, often returning home late at night.
Meanwhile, I faced morning sickness and emotional ups and downs all alone.
Every time I had a prenatal checkup, I went by myself.
"Ye Chen, I'm going for my checkup today," I said on the phone.
"I'm sorry, I can't get away today," he replied.
"Can you come with me another day?"
I hung up the phone angrily, tears streaming down my face: "Why don't you wait until the baby is born to come back?"
I knew he was very busy, with his work and everything else.
But did that mean that I and the baby didn't deserve even a little of his concern?
That night, when Ye Chen came home, it was already very late.
"Gu Nian, I'm sorry." He walked in tiredly and got straight to the point with an apology.
"The case is very complicated; I need time."
I turned around and looked at him, "What about me? What about the child?"
Ye Chen fell silent.
Men often try to solve problems with silence first.
"Do you remember the promise we made when we got married?" I asked.
He lowered his head, "I remember."
I couldn't help but voice my thoughts, "But now your mind is filled with Fang Yuan and her brother."
"That's not true," Ye Chen hurriedly explained, "I just..."
"Just what?" I interrupted him, "Just think that work is more important than us?"
Ye Chen had no words in response.
I turned and walked into the bedroom, leaving Ye Chen standing alone in the living room.
The wind in the living room was cold, making me hug myself tightly.
Our marriage felt like a small boat swaying in a storm.
I no longer know how much longer I can hold on.
Days go by, and my belly gradually starts to show.
But Ye Chen still hasn't made any improvements; he hasn't been seen for several days.
One day, I ran into Fang Yuan at the supermarket.
When she saw my belly, her expression turned grim. "You're pregnant?"
I nodded, unsure of what to say.
"Does Ye Chen know?" she asked again.
"Yes," I replied, a sudden wave of unease washing over me.
"Are you... looking for Ye Chen for something?"
Fang Yuan looked me up and down, sneering, "You don't know? Ye Chen promised to help me raise the surgery fees, but now he's avoiding me."
I was taken aback. "What surgery fees?"
"My brother needs another operation, but our family has already gone bankrupt," Fang Yuan said, her eyes glistening with feigned tears. "Even though I said it wouldn't trouble him, Ye Chen insisted on helping. But now..."
I felt a wave of dizziness and had to lean on the shopping cart to steady myself.
Ye Chen promised to help Fang Yuan raise surgery funds?
This news hit me like a heavy blow, striking hard at my heart.
I forced myself to return home, feeling completely dazed.
Ye Chen, how many more things are you hiding from me?
In the evening, when Ye Chen came back, I went straight to the point and asked him, "Is it true that you promised to help Fang Yuan raise surgery funds?"
He was clearly taken aback for a moment, then sighed, "How did you find out?"
"So it is true?" I sneered. "How long were you planning to keep this from me?"
Ye Chen wearily rubbed his temples. "No, I was just about to tell you..."
"Really?" I interrupted him.
"Just like you hid the matter about Fang Yuan's brother?"
"Gu Nian, let me explain..."
"Explain what? Explain why you always put others first?"
I could no longer control my emotions: "Ye Chen, are you crazy?! Our child is about to be born, have you thought about our future?!"
Ye Chen fell silent once again.
Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my abdomen, and my face turned pale instantly.
"Gu Nian, what's wrong?" Ye Chen panicked.
"It hurts... it hurts so much..." I clutched my stomach, breaking out in a cold sweat.
Ye Chen immediately picked me up and rushed out the door: "Hang in there, we're going to the hospital right now!"
At the hospital, I was taken into the emergency room.
Ye Chen was outside, anxious like an ant on a hot pan, constantly asking the nurses for updates.
Finally, the doctor came out.
"The patient's condition is stable but needs to rest in bed," the doctor said.
"The pregnant woman should maintain a pleasant mood and avoid significant emotional fluctuations."
Ye Chen let out a sigh of relief and nodded repeatedly. "Thank you, Doctor. I will take good care of her."
That night, Ye Chen stayed by my bedside, holding my hand.
"I'm sorry, Nian Nian," he said, his eyes filled with guilt. "I shouldn't have kept it from you."
I looked at him, feeling a mix of emotions.
Apologies, more apologies.
I didn't understand why these two words kept lingering in my marriage.
"Ye Chen, can we be honest with each other?" I asked softly.
He nodded. "Ask me anything; I'll tell you everything."
"You and Fang Yuan..."
"We're just ordinary friends," Ye Chen interrupted me.
"I helped her only because of guilt."
"Guilt?"
Ye Chen took a deep breath. "I was the lead surgeon for her brother's operation. I... I made a mistake."
I was stunned. "What do you mean?"
"I misjudged the situation, which led to complications during the surgery." Ye Chen lowered his head. "That's the real reason why Fang Yuan's family wants to sue."
I felt a wave of dizziness. "So you've been hiding this from me, wanting to bear it all alone?"
"I didn't want you to worry," Ye Chen said. "I thought I could handle it quickly..."
I closed my eyes, tears flowing uncontrollably.
"Nian Nian," Ye Chen held my hand tightly, "give me one more chance, okay? I promise I won't hide anything from you in the future."
I looked at him, unsure whether to believe him.
Just then, the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open.
"Doctor Ye, something happened!" a nurse rushed in, panicked.
"Miss Fang... Miss Fang has... committed suicide!"
