When I was a child and fell ill, my mother would always hold Xiao Li and Xiao Ming in her arms, gently comforting them. But for me, there was only a cold, icy response: "Didn't I give you medicine? Go take it yourself."
Sometimes, when I felt too miserable to bear it, I would let out a few whimpers, only to be scolded by my mother: "Your sister and brother didn't make a sound; why are you acting like a spoiled child?"
In truth, all I wanted was for her to treat me like she did my sister and brother, to comfort me and hold me. But I never received that.
I understood from a young age that I was not the one who was loved. So when Parents announced that all the family assets would go to Xiao Ming, I had no objections.
I thought I would live my life without feeling pain or pleasure. However, this time, something deep inside me was suddenly stirred. Perhaps it was the merciless ridicule from Xiao Wanwan, or maybe it was the time spent with Zhang Li that gave me my first friend and made me realize for the first time that I wanted to be valued by someone.
On a whim, I said, "Parents, shouldn't you give me something too? Just like you did for my sister and younger brother."
My Mom froze, as if she couldn't believe her ears. My dad frowned: "Second child?"
My Mom suddenly stood up, her voice sharp: "Xiao Ting, do you even know what you're saying?"
"What face do you have to compare yourself to your sister and brother? Your brother is the only heir in our family; the assets should naturally go to him."
"We've raised you for so many years; are we wrong for that? Are you now complaining that we favor others?"
I lowered my head and said nothing.
Xiao Ming rolled his eyes impatiently: "Mom, why are you saying that about second sister? Doesn't she just want a car? What's wrong with buying her one?"
My Mom retorted sharply: "Xiao Ming, don't speak. I'm not done with you yet; your older sister isn't paying her support fees, and what about you?"
"How many years have you worked, and have you ever given a penny in support?"
Xiao Ming stuck out his tongue, too afraid to speak.
My Mom continued, "If you want a car, you can have one, but you have to buy it yourself. Your dad and I won't spend a dime."
"And if you feel like you can't stay in this house anymore, you can leave anytime."
I felt a lump in my throat, and tears almost fell.
Xiao Ming muttered unhappily, "Mom, how can you say that? Second Sister hasn't done anything wrong; she's your biological daughter too."
My Mom shot him a glare: "If you don't speak, no one will think you're mute."
She turned to me: "Xiao Ting, do you have any objections?"
I lowered my head, my eyes red, and said nothing.
My Dad slammed the table and stormed out: "Look at all of you! What have you turned into? This once happy family is now in shambles because of you!"
My Mom scoffed: "Your dad is just angry because of you all; one day he'll be driven to his grave by your antics."
Xiao Li sneered from the side: "Xiao Ting, do you really dare to speak up? Don't you know that your brother has been using you? He just wants an excuse for Mom to target you."
I stared blankly at Xiao Li: "What do you mean?"
Xiao Li looked at me mockingly: "It's surprising you're still in college and can't see this simple thing. In this family, you're the one with the least status. It's no wonder your brother uses you as a pawn."
This farce ended with Xiao Li causing a scene.
In the end, our parents made concessions and agreed to buy her a two-bedroom apartment.
Only then was Xiao Li satisfied, reconciling with Mom as they cozied up together, discussing how to decorate the new house.
