At the end of October, the weather is warm and the sunlight is gentle.
I stood by the roadside, holding my sunglasses, hesitating whether to put them on before heading to my husband's company.
After much deliberation, I decided not to wear the sunglasses.
Going to the office now, wearing sunglasses would actually draw more attention.
I planned to go on Monday when my husband was away on a business trip, and then I could say I was delivering something for him.
Monday arrived quickly.
I drove to my husband's company.
I rarely visit the office; when I do, everyone is very polite to me.
This time was no exception.
The receptionist greeted me warmly: "Sister Li, you’re here."
I smiled and nodded: "I came to deliver something to your boss; is he in?"
The young lady shook her head: "The boss is not here."
I said, "Then I'll go up and wait for him for a bit."
The young lady looked a bit troubled: "Well..."
I patted her shoulder: "Don't worry, I won't disturb you all."
The little girl quickly waved her hands, saying, "No, no, that's not what I meant."
I ignored her and went straight upstairs.
When I reached outside my husband's office, I noticed a flurry of activity. Many people were walking around, but most of them were unfamiliar faces, and the atmosphere was quite gloomy.
I grabbed someone and asked, "Where's your boss?"
The person looked at me warily and replied, "Who are you?"
I pointed to the office and said, "I'm your boss's wife."
The person's expression immediately changed to one of respect. "Oh, it's the boss's wife. The boss isn't here."
I glanced into the office. "I know. How has your company been doing lately?"
The person hesitated before responding, "Well..."
I looked around. "Why are there so many new employees in your company?"
The person explained, "The company expanded its business recently, so we hired quite a few people."
I nodded and took another look at the office. "Alright then, I'll be on my way. You all carry on with your work."
As I turned to leave, my peripheral vision caught sight of an empty workstation in the corner.
There was no one at that workstation, and the desk lacked a computer or files—only a small box containing some personal items.
I stopped in my tracks and pointed to that workstation, asking the person next to me, "What happened to the person who worked there?"
The person glanced at me and said, "Oh, that colleague at that workstation resigned."
I felt a sinking feeling in my heart. "Resigned? When?"
The person thought for a moment. "Just last week."
I walked over to that workstation and sat down in the chair, taking a look at the items on the desk.
There wasn't much on the desk, just an invoice from a ride-hailing service and a trip itinerary that hadn't been torn off yet.
I picked up the invoice and noticed it was dated a month ago.
Next to me, there was a young girl wearing glasses, deeply focused on her work.
I asked her, "Do you know why the colleague at this workstation resigned?"
The girl shook her head. "I'm not sure."
I asked again, "Do you know where she went?"
The girl shook her head once more. "I don't know."
I stared at the girl for a few seconds until she looked up and met my gaze.
Her eyes were large and appeared very innocent.
Feeling a bit flustered under my gaze, the girl cautiously asked, "Boss, is there anything else you need?"
I shook my head. "Nothing else."
The young girl let out a sigh of relief and continued to focus on her work.
I sat at my workstation for a moment to rest and took the opportunity to observe my surroundings.
I noticed that everyone around me was busy, but the atmosphere felt oppressive, unlike what one would expect in a normal company.
I went to ask the older employee who had just spoken to me, "Has something happened in your company recently?"
The older employee hesitated for a moment, leaned in close to my ear, and whispered, "Our company hasn't paid salaries for two months."
I was taken aback. "No salaries?"
The older employee nodded, quickly glanced around, and then pretended nothing was wrong as he returned to his workstation.
I called Wang Naixin to inform her about what I had seen at the company.
After listening, Wang Naixin was silent for a moment. "I had someone check it out. That person named Wu Jing really did rent a place. I'll send you the address now; you can go check it out."
I sincerely thanked her, "Thank you, Wang Naixin."
Wang Naixin chuckled lightly. "Do you want to make a big deal out of the affair? I can help you with that."
I hesitated. "Forget it; I don't want to escalate this too much."
Wang Naixin replied calmly, "You haven't been pushed to your limits yet. When you truly are, you'll realize that face doesn't matter at all."
With that, Wang Naixin hung up the phone.
I held my phone, feeling a mix of emotions.
Maybe Wang Naixin was right; I haven't been pushed to the brink yet, so I still want to maintain my dignity.
But I hope I will never be pushed to that point.
When I got home, my husband was working in the study.
I walked into the study, and he looked up at me, his expression a bit uneasy.
It seemed that my going directly to the company to find him had made him feel a sense of crisis.
I smiled at him, set my bag down, walked behind him, and wrapped my arms around him.
My hands encircled his neck, and I rested my chin on his shoulder, softly saying, "Honey, if you're tired, take a break. Don't forget, I'm here for you."
His body stiffened for a moment before he relaxed.
He patted the back of my hand and asked, "What's wrong?"
I nuzzled my cheek against his ear and replied, "Nothing much. I just feel like we haven't hugged like this in a long time. I wanted to hold you."
