This planned interview, orchestrated by my dad, would not be broadcasted.
On the way back, the system informed me that Lin Che was initially unwilling to participate, but he returned after the Chuan Yue Bureau promised him a bonus. In reality, he was already married with children, but recently he had become addicted to gambling and lost a significant amount of money, making him desperate for cash. So he readily agreed.
I dozed off in the moving car. When I woke up, I found myself alone. Slowly, I got up, pushed the door open, and stood in the corridor on the second floor, listening to the lively sounds coming from the living room downstairs.
Lin Che's voice came through, choked with emotion: "Mom and Dad, Sister, I never thought I would see you again! That kidnapper threw me into the sea, but luckily I was rescued by local fishermen."
"When I woke up, I had lost all my memories and lived in a fishing village."
"Only recently did I start to remember everything in my dreams." My mom's crying could be heard: "You're back; that's all that matters."
Lin Rong probably patted his shoulder and sighed: "You're back; our family is whole again." He cried again.
Then he said a few kind words to my dad before hesitantly asking Gu Yan: "Yan, I just heard the butler mention that you... you married my brother, right?"
"I'm sorry for being away for so many years."
"Does he treat you well?"
Gu Yan was silent for a moment before answering: "I'm doing fine." Her voice clearly carried a hint of tears.
Lin Che's voice grew closer: "Let's stop crying; I want to go upstairs and see if my brother is awake."
Lin Che rushed up the stairs and gave me a big hug. "Brother! I'm back!"
After saying that, he pulled me left and right to look at me. "Why have you lost so much weight? You don't look well; haven't you been eating properly?"
"In the future, with me around, you won't have to worry so much!" His tone was filled with deep concern.
I glanced down. The family was gathered at the staircase. My mom was wiping her tears, Lin Rong was looking at Lin Che with a satisfied smile. Gu Yan gazed over, lost in thought, his eyes lingering on Lin Che. Even my usually stern dad looked at us with a meaningful expression.
I spoke lightly, "Aren't you going to explain that phone call to me?" His smile faded, and his expression became somewhat complicated. Before he could respond, Lin Rong scolded discontentedly, "Lin Chi, Che just got back; do you really have to dwell on the past?"
But who has been blaming everything on me for the past ten years? Shouldn't I ask for an explanation? Just as I was about to speak, a wave of metallic sweetness surged in my throat.
Lin Rong mockingly said, "You act all tough just because I said a couple of words; are you made of paper?"
Lin Che played the good guy and said, "Sis, don’t say that about my brother; he’s probably just too tired. Let him rest." He tried to change the subject, but I wouldn’t let it go.
Grabbing his collar tightly, I shouted, "Why did you call me like that? Are you brave enough to say why?"
Lin Che froze for a moment and then spoke pitifully, "Bro, it was that Kidnapper who made me say that; I had no choice! You can scold me or hit me! I won't retaliate!"
Countless images flashed through my mind: the cold hospital room, countless whippings and injections; the damp steps that left my knees bloodied; the indifferent faces reminding me again and again that it was all my fault.
"Alright," I smiled. Then I summoned all my strength and threw a punch at his face, spitting out, "This is for you being such a son of a bitch."
Lin Che let out a painful cry, and Lin Rong rushed over to pull him back, unhesitatingly slapping me across the face.
"What are you doing?!"
Gu Yan exclaimed from downstairs, "Lin Chi, are you crazy?"
My mother scolded sharply, "Xiao Chi, how can you treat your brother like this?"
My father expressed his dissatisfaction, "Such filthy language! What kind of behavior is that?"
At this point, I could no longer hold back and smiled, bright red liquid flowing from between my lips and teeth, endlessly.
When I woke up again, the family doctor was by my bedside.
He said, "Your body is fine; you're just too weak. Make sure to rest well."
Indeed, there was nothing wrong; I was just on the verge of death. The system ensured that no one would find out I had any illness.
Outside the door, Lin Rong's cool voice came through: "I told you he’s fine long ago, Mom. Don't worry about it. Che wants to go camping today; let's all go together!"
Then I heard them leaving.
That day, Gu Yan and Lin Rong posted photos on their social media of the happy family camping trip, except for me.
In the following days, Gu Yan came to see me every day but couldn't say much.
I was too lazy to engage with her, and she didn't want to make things awkward.
My mother also came every day, holding my hand and urging me to get better soon, subtly telling me not to hold grudges against Lin Che since we were all family.
I didn't miss the joy that couldn't be hidden in the corners of her eyes and brows.
Lin Rong visited every few days; we exchanged cold glances while she seemed in good spirits and refrained from saying anything unpleasant. Occasionally, she would call the nanny aside to inquire about my diet and daily routine.
I wasn't upset by her perfunctory concern; in fact, I didn't feel much about the failed task either.
While they were happy about Lin Che's return, I was eager to publish a book.
I wanted to see my sister.
