After repelling the enemy and tidying up the battlefield, Zhou Shu came over after bandaging himself.
I walked quickly towards him, "Can't you just take it easy and rest?"
"I'm fine."
"Zhou Shu, I could have dodged earlier; I knew someone was behind me. I deliberately misled them." I said through gritted teeth. Seriously, after getting hurt once, would I fall in the same place again? How foolish!
Zhou Shu's pupils trembled, "A pointless injury."
"Ha, that's the result of being self-righteous."
"I... thought..." In the end, Zhou Shu didn't finish his sentence and just smiled bitterly.
"Oh, so you imposed your thoughts on me. Thank you very much!"
Seeing my busy companions around, I continued to tidy up and ignored this fool.
He was definitely the first to get injured.
I lifted an enemy's sleeve and immediately covered it back after seeing it clearly.
"It's the Protector's Order!" Zhou Shu leaned over from the side.
"Tch!" We weren't that familiar.
Of course, I knew it was the Protector's Order.
Ancestor is the Protector.
But I didn't believe that this was done by Ancestor.
I knocked on the door.
A voice from inside asked, "Who is it?"
" Ancestor, I used some medicine to save people today, and I'm here to get some more."
"Come in."
I pushed the door open and saw Zhou Shu; I excitedly pointed at him and said, "What are you doing here?"
"Looking for Master!"
"Mas... Master!"
"Hahaha, I forgot to introduce you; this is my third disciple, Zhou Shu." Ancestor pointed at me, "This is my great-grandson, Li Jin."
"Xiao Jin, call him Grandpa Zhou."
What a big surprise!
You treat your brother as my grandfather.
But the fact was there; I had no choice but to compromise. Reluctantly, I mumbled, "Grandpa Zhou."
"Good boy."
After that, I said nothing. Zhou Shu did all the talking, and I was happy to take it easy. In the end, the Ancestor had us investigate separately. We were to collaborate and find out who was behind the smear campaign against him. The other party had already made their move, and there might be more than just the two of us involved. They were waiting for things to escalate. Time was short; we had to find clues quickly.
After years of struggle, I had my own methods. In the alliance meeting, I checked every place I could access. To avoid alarming the big shots, I didn’t touch any of them. Finally, I found a dagger in a junior disciple's room. It was identical to a weapon used by one of the people who once hunted me.
With a target in sight, I informed Zhou Shu, who was the Grand Elder and could access information and files more easily than I could. Following this lead, we identified two suspects. I kept an eye on these three individuals while Zhou Shu continued to investigate personnel based on the leads.
You might wonder how I could monitor three people alone; well, I had my tools! Stealth work is tedious, boring, and lonely. Fortunately, hard work pays off. Three days later, when rumors began to circulate, they took action.
When I saw who approached, I fell silent. They were disguised so well that I couldn’t tell who they were. Luckily, I overheard their plans. Upon returning, I shared my findings with Zhou Shu. We devised a plan to gather evidence.
When Zhao Jiahao, the Ancestor's eldest disciple, was captured, the Ancestor looked utterly disappointed. "Big Brother, how could you betray Master?" Zhou Shu murmured. The atmosphere was heavy with silence until finally, the Ancestor waved his hand: "Take him away; let the Alliance Leader handle it. No need to spare me any face."
"Master!" Seeing the Ancestor give up on his eldest disciple shattered Zhou Shu's composure. "Numbers don’t matter; we have no right to forgive him for the innocent lives lost," the Ancestor shouted sternly before his voice choked with emotion: "Take him away!"
Everyone left, but I stayed behind quietly accompanying the Ancestor.
The Ancestor has grown old. The leader's punishment for Zhao Jiahao is eternal imprisonment in the Dream Cage. This means that Zhao Jiahao will be subjected to a permanent illusion. Living without consciousness, he will be like a fool in reality, ignorant and unaware.
The night deepened. The Ancestor waved for me to go back and rest. "I want to sleep here," I said, lying down on the spot and stretching, "Ah! It's cool! So comfortable!" The Ancestor saw me like this and jokingly scolded, "Little rascal. Go on, I'm fine!"
The Ancestor's expression was indeed light-hearted, so I got up and bowed, saying, "Great-grandson takes his leave." Usually, I would joke around with the Ancestor, but not this time; I knew my limits.
Time passed quietly. My usual job was to remove pests. Four years flew by, and I had become an experienced senior. This time, my task was to escort the newcomers.
"Senior, our task today is to patrol East Street," Zhang Dachui respectfully informed me of tonight's objective. "Alright, let's set off!" I waved my hand, appearing like a celestial being or a master of unparalleled skill. I was only twenty-four, still young! But with juniors around, I had to act a bit more profound.
"Yes, Senior," said Feng Qiu, a lively girl of eighteen. "Yes, Senior," replied Zhu Shaohua, a steady young man of twenty. The four of us began our patrol.
Zhang Dachui was as his name suggested—broad-shouldered and robust, with a voice like thunder. He took the lead on the task and was quite bold. Feng Qiu managed the medicine and could treat injuries; she was our healer. Zhu Shaohua was responsible for managing and repairing group equipment; he was our craftsman.
As we passed through the middle road, Feng Qiu stopped suddenly after sniffing the air carefully. "What's wrong?" Zhang Dachui asked quietly. "Mist Wisp—a kind of hallucinogenic drug," Feng Qiu quickly replied.
Upon hearing this, I ordered, "Be careful; check your surroundings within a hundred meters." The three spread out while I remained in place so that I could rush to any area of concern as quickly as possible.
Five minutes later, the three returned. "No abnormalities," Feng Qiu looked at her companions. "There's a dance hall that seems off!" Zhu Shaohua reported.
"I have an animal rescue station here, and it's a bit sinister."
The three of them looked at me, and I waved for us to head to the dance hall. Generally, dance halls are the easiest places to hide filth, and any slight disturbance would lead to immediate cleanup. The animal rescue station wouldn't run; it would stay put.
Upon arriving at the dance hall, we changed our appearances to blend in as either guests or staff. Zhang Dachui discovered a group of unconscious individuals in the basement.
This is where looks have their advantages; while we were still breaking through each other's defenses, Zhang Dachui disguised himself as security personnel and smoothly gained access.
Once we identified the problem, we cast spells to control the scene and called the police directly. Feng Qiu trembled as he examined them.
"They're all scum. Can you kill them, Senior?" Zhang Dachui's voice thundered, causing my eardrums to ache.
I looked at him, a complex emotion swelling within me. I understood his anger, but I also knew that responding with violence was not the solution.
"Bad people are not meant to be killed," I replied calmly. Though my voice seemed weak against Zhang Dachui's roar, my gaze was firm, revealing an undeniable resolve.
Zhang Dachui was taken aback, clearly not expecting such a response from me. His tightly clenched fists trembled slightly as he struggled to suppress his rage.
"They deserve to die," he repeated, his voice tinged with reluctance and despair. In his eyes, I saw the youthful version of ourselves.
I took a deep breath and walked over to him, gently patting his shoulder.
"I understand how you feel, Dachui," I said softly. "I was once angry too; I once wanted to end it all with my own hands. But violence only begets more violence; we need to find a better way to resolve this."
Zhang Dachui looked at me, the flames in his eyes gradually subsiding, replaced by deep contemplation.
"What should we do then?" he asked, a hint of confusion in his voice.
I turned to gaze out at the starry sky, where countless possibilities twinkled.
"We must expose the truth and let light dispel darkness," I said. "We need those people to pay for their actions—not through killing but through justice."
"Publicly reveal their crimes and execute justice openly; only then will more people be alerted and crime will decrease," I said earnestly, recalling how passionate I once was about this.
"There will always be pests. We can only curb their growth by fighting tirelessly to protect the people."
Feng Qiu was indignant: "They've been malnourished for a long time and their spirits have suffered varying degrees of damage; they won't wake up anytime soon..."
