I blinked in confusion and looked at him. "Have you had too much to drink?"
He shook his head and smiled. "I can hold my liquor pretty well."
"Then you..."
He tilted his head and gazed at me quietly. "Don't you believe what I'm saying?"
I hesitated for a moment and whispered, "It's not that I don't believe you; I just feel..."
"Feel what?"
"Feel..." I paused, gathering my courage. "Feel that it's strange for you to say such things to me."
He was slightly taken aback but then smiled. "Why do you say that?"
"Because the way you present yourself in front of me is different from how others see you."
He fell silent for a long time before quietly asking, "Which one do you prefer?"
I was stunned.
I had never thought about that question.
Do I like him?
I didn't know.
All I knew was that I liked it when he called me sister, enjoyed being with him, and loved seeing him smile...
But whether this kind of liking was romantic or not, I wasn't sure.
Maybe I just see him as family.
I sighed and said softly, "Jiang Xiaoyu, I'm a bit tired today. I'm going to head back and rest. You should get to bed early too."
After saying that, I turned to leave.
Just a few steps out, my phone suddenly rang.
It was Zhang Tingting calling.
I answered the phone, "Hello, Tingting."
Zhang Tingting's voice was as haughty as ever, "Hey, have you seen Jiang Xiaoyu?"
"Yeah, I saw him."
"Did he bully you?"
"No."
"Hmph, at least he knows better."
I couldn't help but laugh, "Why are you suddenly concerned about him?"
Zhang Tingting cleared her throat, "Who’s concerned about him? I'm just worried you might get bullied by him."
"Really?"
"Of course!" Zhang Tingting sounded a bit flustered, "I'm warning you, don't say anything bad about me in front of him."
"Who would dare?"
"Cut, you better not dare." Zhang Tingting paused, "By the way, Jiang Xiaoyu has a bit of a temper, especially in front of strangers. He always looks cold and aloof, but he should be a bit better around you."
I was slightly taken aback. "Why?"
"Because you're nice to him," Zhang Tingting said matter-of-factly. "That kid may have a bad temper, but he knows how to be grateful."
I couldn't help but laugh. "You seem to think quite highly of him."
"Not really," Zhang Tingting mumbled. "I just don't want to owe him any favors."
"Oh," I deliberately elongated my tone, "I see, so you're afraid of owing him a favor."
"Exactly," Zhang Tingting said confidently. "Owing favors is very troublesome; I hate it the most."
I shook my head helplessly. "Yes, yes, Miss Zhang hates owing favors the most."
After hanging up the phone, I looked up and found Jiang Xiaoyu staring at me.
His eyes were dark and bright, shining like black jewels, making it hard to look away.
I felt a bit uncomfortable under his gaze and touched my cheek. "Is there something on my face?"
He shook his head and softly said, "No."
"Then you..."
"I just think your smile is really beautiful," he said gently.
My heart skipped a beat.
I looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "You're drunk; let me help you get back."
"I'm not drunk," he insisted stubbornly.
"Okay, you're not drunk," I sighed helplessly and turned to shout at Zhao Ming not far away, "Hey, Zhao Ming, could you please take Teacher Jiang back to the dorm?"
"Sure thing!" Zhao Ming said with a smile as he ran over and put his arm around Jiang Xiaoyu's shoulder. "Come on, Teacher Jiang, let's go."
Jiang Xiaoyu didn't resist and obediently followed Zhao Ming away.
I watched their figures disappear, a wave of inexplicable emotions rising in my heart.
What did those words from Jiang Xiaoyu really mean?
Could it be that he likes me?
The thought flashed through my mind, sending a chill down my spine.
How could that be?
We're good friends, and besides, he's three years younger than me...
I shook my head, trying to dispel the distracting thoughts in my mind, and turned back to the dining table.
The meal was still ongoing, but the atmosphere was no longer as lively as before.
Everyone seemed tired, focusing on their food without chatting anymore.
Gao Yang had been silent, his gaze fixed on me, making me feel uneasy.
After a moment of hesitation, I finally couldn't hold back: "Gao Yang, if you have something to say, just say it."
Gao Yang gave a wry smile. "I'm sorry, Song Jia, I know I shouldn't disturb you, but I really can't control myself."
I lowered my eyelids and didn't respond.
"I really miss the days we spent together," Gao Yang said, his voice low and filled with deep sadness. "We were so happy back then, without any worries, but..."
He sighed. "But in the end, we still parted ways."
I remained silent.
"I'm sorry, Song Jia," Gao Yang's voice gradually became firm. "I don't want to be a burden to you, so I respect your choice."
I looked up at him and managed a faint smile. "Thank you for your understanding."
"No need to thank me," Gao Yang winked at me. "After all, I hope you find happiness too."
I bit my lip and stood up. "I'm going back to the dormitory now. You all enjoy your meal."
With that, I quickly walked towards the dormitory.
I didn't dare to look back, fearing that if I did, tears would fall.
Gao Yang's blessing felt more like a mockery to me.
I knew I had hurt him, but I had no other choice.
I had already lost too much in my life; I didn't want to lose myself as well.
The next morning, I got up early and went to the kitchen to help make breakfast.
As I was bringing the porridge to the courtyard, I bumped into Jiang Xiaoyu.
He was wearing sneakers, and his forehead was covered in sweat; it seemed he had just come back from a run.
"You..." I was a bit surprised. "Why are you up so early?"
He glanced at me, his face slightly flushed. "I couldn't sleep, so I went for a run."
"Oh." I nodded. "You should hurry and take a shower and change your clothes. Be careful not to catch a cold."
"Yeah." He replied softly and hurried past me.
I was taken aback, wondering why he seemed to be avoiding me like the plague.
Just then, Zhao Ming suddenly popped out from the side, grinning. "Teacher Song, is Teacher Jiang shy?"
"Shy?" I was even more confused. "What is he shy about?"
"I don't know." Zhao Ming scratched his head. "I ran into him earlier and said hello, but he ignored me, and his face was really red."
After hearing Zhao Ming's words, I became more certain that Jiang Xiaoyu was indeed avoiding me.
But why was he avoiding me?
I couldn't figure it out.
After breakfast, I took the students to the playground for gym class.
I noticed that Jiang Xiaoyu had not come near me at all.
Even when we happened to walk towards each other, he would quickly change direction and keep his distance from me.
The more I thought about it, the stranger it felt. So during a break, I called him over.
"Why are you avoiding me?" I asked straightforwardly.
He was taken aback, a blush appearing on his face. "N-no, I didn't."
"No?" I narrowed my eyes at him. "Then why did you hide as soon as you saw me?"
"I..." he stammered, "I felt a bit hot."
"Hot?" I looked at him suspiciously. "What month is it? Why are you feeling hot?"
"I..." He hesitated for a moment. "I have a good constitution."
I was completely speechless.
I stared at him for a long time before suddenly realizing something.
Could it be that he likes me?
This thought startled me.
No way, we've known each other for so long; if he liked me, he should have confessed by now. Why wait until now?
But if he doesn't like me, then why does he hide whenever he sees me?
After thinking for a long time, I ultimately decided not to dwell on this question.
Maybe he just isn't used to being alone with me yet.
I comforted myself with that thought.
After school in the afternoon, I returned to the dormitory and found that Jiang Xiaoyu was not there.
I sent him a message asking where he had gone, but he didn't reply.
I thought for a moment and called Zhao Ming to ask about Jiang Xiaoyu's whereabouts.
Zhao Ming told me that Jiang Xiaoyu had gone out in the afternoon and hadn't returned since.
I immediately panicked and hurriedly called Principal Chen to inform him that Jiang Xiaoyu was missing.
Principal Chen quickly organized the teachers to go out and search for Jiang Xiaoyu.
We searched the entire Wutong Village but still couldn't find Jiang Xiaoyu.
I was so anxious that tears started to fall. I cried while calling Jiang Xiaoyu, but the phone was always unanswered.
As the sky gradually darkened, we still hadn't found Jiang Xiaoyu.
Despair filled my heart as I sat on the ground, overwhelmed with fear.
What if something happened to Jiang Xiaoyu?
If something happened to him, how would I explain it to Zhang Tingting?
Just then, my phone suddenly vibrated.
I quickly took out my phone; it was a call from Jiang Xiaoyu.
I excitedly answered the call, "Jiang Xiaoyu, where are you?"
Jiang Xiaoyu's voice was soft, "I'm on the back mountain."
"The back mountain?" I paused for a moment, "What are you doing there?"
"Looking at the stars."
I breathed a sigh of relief and then angrily said, "Do you know how worried we were looking for you? And you're out stargazing?"
"I'm sorry," Jiang Xiaoyu said softly.
"Forget it," I sighed. "Just hurry back. Everyone is worried sick."
"Okay."
After hanging up the phone, I reported Jiang Xiaoyu's location to Principal Chen and then returned to school with the teachers.
As soon as I walked through the school gate, I received a message from Jiang Xiaoyu.
"Have you reconciled with Gao Yang?"
I was taken aback, and a sudden wave of inexplicable irritation surged within me.
"No," I quickly typed back. "Don't make wild guesses."
"Oh," Jiang Xiaoyu replied with just one word and didn't say anything else.
I tucked my phone into my pocket, took a deep breath, and tried to calm my emotions.
What is wrong with me?
