Wu Rong's coldness truly left Rao Jie in awe, but there was indeed no warmth between them. 0

Rao Jie forced a smile and said, "I’ll definitely be back before midnight. I just need to go home to discuss something and I’ll return right after." 0

Wu Rong waved dismissively, uninterested in hearing more, and turned to close the door behind him. 0

Without hesitation, Rao Jie grabbed her things and hurriedly set off. 0

Upon arriving home, she knocked for quite a while before someone finally opened the door. It was a middle-aged woman named Huang Xiang—her mother. 0

"Look who finally decided to come back!" Huang Xiang's voice was sharp, filled with reprimand, making Rao Jie feel uneasy in her chest. 0

Though Huang Xiang was shorter than Rao Jie, her presence felt towering, her face fierce as she glared at her daughter with the expression of a disappointed parent. 0

Before Rao Jie could respond, Huang Xiang pulled her inside. 0

Rao Jie stumbled slightly as she was yanked forward; her wrist throbbed painfully, but she held back any cries of discomfort. 0

It wasn’t until they reached the living room that Huang Xiang released her grip, only to give her a push that nearly caused Rao Jie to lose her balance. 0

However, accustomed to her mother’s forceful nature—typical of many strong-willed middle-aged women—Rao Jie chose not to react. She simply sighed inwardly; this was just how her mother was. 0

Looking down at her wrist, she noticed it had already turned red from the pull. 0

On the sofa in the living room sat another person, engrossed in a mobile game and occasionally cursing under his breath. That was her brother, Rao Jian, 24 years old and a college graduate who had yet to find stable employment. He flitted from job to job every few months and often dreamed big despite his lack of effort. After finally securing a decent position through their parents' connections, he had only brought trouble upon himself. 0

Despite spending most of his time gaming and doing nothing around the house, he remained their parents' favorite son. 0

Rao Jian glanced up at Rao Jie and smirked mockingly, "Oh look, the princess has returned! Did you enjoy your little adventure away from home?" 0

Rao Jie ignored him and turned to face Huang Xiang, who was glaring at her intently. "Mom, let me say this again: I did not take any money from your drawer. You asked me to come back and talk face-to-face; I’m telling you the same thing—I came back today only to retrieve my belongings. I didn’t even go into your room, let alone take any money." 0

Huang Xiang refused to listen to Rao Jie’s explanation. "Who else could it be? I was the last one to leave this morning; I just put the money away! And when I got back, it was gone—five thousand yuan! You were the only one who came home in between! I know you’re upset about leaving home; is that why you came back to steal money? If you’re so tough about it, why come home for cash?" 0

As soon as Huang Xiang finished speaking, tears welled up in Rao Jie's eyes, turning them redder than before; she fought hard to keep them from spilling over. 0

"What’s wrong? Do you feel wronged? You think it’s my fault? Our parents say it’s perfectly reasonable; you refuse to admit your mistakes and still dare to argue with me! Why do you seem more unreasonable as you grow up? Have you gotten too independent now? Think we can’t control you anymore?" 0

As she spoke, Huang Xiang punctuated her words with two sharp slaps on Rao Jie's back that echoed through the room. 0

Rao Jie felt as if she was about to spit out blood, unsure whether it was from anger or being hit. 0
