After receiving her reply, I finally relaxed completely. At that moment, I deeply realized that work was more important than life itself.
Around one in the morning, I was awakened by a series of urgent phone rings. Groggily, I answered the call, and a man's furious voice came through: "What’s wrong with you? Why didn’t you take Ting home?"
I was taken aback for a moment, then realized the caller was Zhang Ting's Husband. I pressed the record button and replied calmly, "I'm not a driver, and my home is not on the way to yours. Why should I take your wife home?"
"You... didn’t you say she was your best friend? She's pregnant; can't you show some understanding?" The caller was clearly enraged by my words, his voice rising a few decibels.
"She’s my friend, not my daughter. Why should I show her understanding? Besides, isn’t it your duty as her husband to pick up your pregnant wife?" I retorted coldly before hanging up the phone and blocking his number.
The next day, as soon as I arrived at the office, I began writing my resignation letter. By 8:50 AM, Zhang Ting had not yet arrived at the company. Since 7 AM, she had been calling me repeatedly, but I didn’t answer any of them. A few days ago, I kindly offered her a ride, but her husband not only failed to thank me but also complained that I had taken his wife away, which led to me getting scolded. When I refused to take her yesterday, Zhang Ting asked me to wait for her to leave together, but I declined, and her husband called to scold me again. I felt there was no need for me to help her anymore.
At 9 AM, Zhang Ting rushed in. As soon as she entered, she sat down and gasped for breath; it seemed she had run over. Someone next to her asked why she was late, and she said she was worried something had happened to me, which was why she arrived late. Then she went to plead with the manager, saying that I hadn’t meant to be late; I had been scolded over the phone last night and hadn’t slept well, which caused me to be in poor spirits today.
The manager was unhappy after hearing this and said that Zhang Ting was being unreasonable; the company hired her to work, not to enjoy special treatment. Zhang Ting stood there feeling wronged, looking down without saying a word.
"Xia Tian, are you doing this on purpose?" Zhang Ting walked up to me and questioned.
"What did I do on purpose?" I asked, looking confused.
"You clearly could have taken me home. Why did you wait until so late to leave?" Zhang Ting asked, dissatisfied.
"Why should I take you home? You're not my wife. Besides, I said I needed to deliver documents to my boss. Is taking you home more important than my work?" I replied with a smile.
"I'm pregnant! Aren't you supposed to take care of me since you're my good friend?" Zhang Ting said assertively.
"You're carrying his child, not mine. Why should I take care of you?" I retorted, pointing at her belly.
"And it's already considerate of me that I didn't report your husband for harassing me when he called me at one in the morning," I said while typing without looking away.
"Xia Tian, my husband's parents are well-educated and come from a good family. I know you've always wanted to marry someone with a good background, but you can't tarnish his reputation because of that! I'm just worried that you'll make him wonder if you got home safely," Zhang Ting complained with a look of grievance.
The colleagues around us looked at me with mocking suspicion.
With Zhang Ting's smug expression, I played the recording from last night and sarcastically asked, "Is this your irresponsible husband from a well-educated family?"
Zhang Ting's face instantly turned ugly as she pretended to feel unwell and said she needed to go to the restroom.
