Chapter 014: Establishing the Mercenary Group
“Ha ha, luck, luck. Brothers, I’ll head into the city to rest first, and I’ll treat you both to drinks another day.” Yang Chen nodded in agreement, but inwardly cursed, “What a useless leader of a pack of wolves.” Ever since the last fight with Jungle Scorpion, Howling Sky could no longer summon its kin, and its combat power was comparable to that of a mutt. Yang Chen even suspected that the Sand Wolf summoned by Howling Sky back then might have been one of its former subordinates.
“Alright. We must have a good drink with Brother Yang Chen another day!” Li Qihai said. Li Mu also nodded in agreement. Yang Chen cupped his hands and entered Loulan Ancient City.
“The two brothers from the Li family are both at the Doubler Great Perfection level. Li Qihai is straightforward in character, while Li Mu is calm and gives off an air of unbothered composure. These two are worth befriending!” Yang Chen quietly calculated in his heart.
In these three months, Yang Chen had continuously hunted Demon Beasts, consuming Fighting Spirit and practicing the Demon God Strategy. Finally, ten days ago, he reached the second stage of the Demon God Strategy and comprehended its second skill—Demon God Flash: “Teleport to a designated area and increase speed by 100% for one minute. Consumes 10% of Fury Value.”
This was essentially another version of Deceptive Phantom Step, except it lacked a fear effect during attacks. However, the additional effect indicated that this was an excellent skill for escaping. Moreover, there was no cooldown time; as long as Yang Chen had enough Fury Value, he could continuously teleport.
With the Demon God Strategy reaching the first tier of its second stage, his Fighting Spirit also advanced into the One-Star Fighter Realm. Logically speaking, as long as the Demon God Strategy reached a certain realm, Yang Chen could elevate his Fighting Spirit to that same level. By continuously hunting Demon Beasts, even the two daggers in his hands were close to upgrading to Sixth-Rank Spirit Weapons.
Yang Chen wandered aimlessly around, observing the various cultivators around him. Teams of city law enforcers patrolled the area, and he could hear people shouting about various things everywhere. Wandering around was also the most direct and effective way to gauge the local power dynamics.
Yang Chen made a special discovery regarding the Auction House. The Auction House was the visible force of Shadow Kill Pavilion! In other words, the Auction House was secretly operated by Shadow Kill Pavilion. After thinking for a moment, Yang Chen decided on his next actions in Loulan City. Without pausing his steps, he headed toward Yongbing Guild.
As he approached Yongbing Guild, he could hear a cacophony of voices.
“Is anyone going to hunt Savage Rhinos in the western corner?”
“The Bloodthirsty Puppet Legion will head to Wilderness Center and Slaughter City in three months. Friends interested can join; each person will receive a Fifth-Rank Demon Core.”
“Buying Sixth-Rank Demon Cores; brothers interested in selling can trade on-site.”
This sound was uncertain at the Yongbing Guild. Yang Chen stood quietly at the Yongbing Guild, hesitating for a moment, and said, "Is it necessary to become a Yongbing and live a life of eternally hunting Demon Beasts? However, without hunting Demon Beasts, the tasks of the Demon God Path can never be completed. First, I will join the Mercenary Guild, then go to the Auction House, and enter the Shadow Kill Pavilion! Hunting Demon Beasts and killing people, within ten years, I will surely complete the Demon God Path mission."
After much difficulty, Yang Chen finally squeezed to the reception desk of the Yongbing Guild and asked, "I want to establish a Red Tooth Puppet Brigade. What do I need?"
The receptionist looked at Yang Chen in surprise and said, "Sir, you only have the cultivation of a One-Star Fighter, right? Why do you want to form a Yongbing Guild? With your current abilities, wouldn't it be better to join a small Red Tooth Puppet Brigade?"
Yang Chen smiled and said, "Thank you for your kindness, miss. I am someone who is inherently unwilling to be beneath others; I don't want to look at people's faces when doing anything. Now, please help me explain what conditions are needed to establish a Red Tooth Puppet Brigade."
"Ah, I've seen too many arrogant people like you, but in the end, they all don't fare well in this Wilderness. Since you've already made up your mind, I won't advise you further. The conditions for forming a Red Tooth Puppet Brigade are first to become a Yongbing, and then you can establish the Red Tooth Puppet Brigade."
Yang Chen looked at the receptionist in surprise and said, "Is it that simple?"
The young lady smiled helplessly and said, "It is quite simple. By the way, my name is Roxie. What's yours?"
Yang Chen politely smiled and said, "My name is Yang Chen. Miss Roxie, please help me with the membership procedures; I want to become a Yongbing."
Roxie sighed softly and said, "Alright, follow me. Among those I've seen before, you are the most stubborn one who doesn't consider any consequences." Yang Chen smiled but did not say anything further. He silently followed Roxie to the back of the Yongbing Guild.
Roxie said lightly, "Please wait here for a moment; I will go prepare your paperwork."
Yang Chen nodded and looked around disinterestedly at the walls. On these four walls were four reliefs. The first relief depicted a Human Warrior wielding a Blood-Red Giant Sword, descending from above with blood-red eyes fixed intently on the ground where a Dark Two-Headed Dragon lay.
The second relief showed the Blood-Red Giant Sword, carrying an aura of destruction in the hands of the Human Warrior, as he struck down on the neck of the dark two-headed dragon. The dragon's head lay quietly at the feet of the Human Warrior, its eyes gleaming with a hint of satisfaction. Indeed, what Yang Chen felt was satisfaction—like watching his own child finally grow up, emanating from deep within.
The third relief depicted the same Human Warrior, who had planted his Blood-Red Giant Sword beside him and opened his arms as he floated in the sky, quietly absorbing the essence drifting from the Dark Two-Headed Dragon.
The fourth relief showed that on the ground lay the shriveled body of the Dark Two-Headed Dragon, no longer exuding any essence. Meanwhile, the body of the Human Warrior radiated seven-colored divine light as if he was about to ride on wind and ascend to become a great being blessed by divinity.
"After seeing these Relief, what are your thoughts?" A clear voice came from behind.
"Who is he?" Yang Chen asked without turning around, his eyes fixed on the last piece of Relief.
"He? He is the greatest President of our Yongbing Guild, the great Blood Emperor," Roxie said with admiration in her eyes.
"I can tell he is a demon, or rather, a half-blood between demons and humans," Yang Chen remarked.
"That's right. According to the guild's records, the Blood Emperor is indeed a half-blood. His father is from the Asura Royal Family, while his mother is a top human genius - Lin Mu Yu. She received the title of Rain Monarch at the age of thirty-five."
"Achieving Peak Realm of Battle Saint at thirty-five? What a genius." Yang Chen nodded in agreement. "By the way, where did the Blood Emperor slay the Dark Two-Headed Dragon?" Yang Chen inquired.
"Forbidden Grounds of the Gods," Roxie replied. "It is the place where the gods select strong individuals and where they are enlightened to ascend to the divine realm."
Yang Chen smiled and said, "Can gods enlighten gods? Then why doesn't your Blood Emperor enlighten you all to become gods? How long has your Blood Emperor been a god?"
"Three hundred years!"
"In three hundred years, has anyone else become a god? What about his parents?" Yang Chen asked.
"Since the Blood Emperor became a god, no one has been able to enter the Forbidden Grounds of the Gods. Even Lin Mu Yu Senior, who is at the level of Dou Sheng Da Yuan Man, cannot enter."
