The ideals of National Socialism were tarnished by petty bourgeois revisionists like Hitler, who sought to amend the principles of National Socialism with Capitalism. For his personal ambitions and the interests of his capitalist masters, what did it matter if he had to kill his former comrades who once fought alongside him? Now, all of this will be corrected; true National Socialists will never tolerate such things happening.
I, Gregor Strasser, will cleanse these degenerates and restore order. I am the true Führer of the German people, with no more betrayal!
------April 1, 1924
Strasser closed his diary. Although the goal was very clear, he still needed to carefully consider his future actions.
After Adolf Hitler was arrested and imprisoned on November 10 of last year, Gregor Strasser began his actions. He, along with Alfred Rosenberg, organized a Völkisch movement for the Nazi Party and participated in the state and national elections in the spring of 1924.
In Bavaria, benefiting from the momentum generated by Hitler's uprising, the Nazi Party received enough votes to become the second largest party in the state. In Germany, under the name of National Socialism and the German Freedom Movement, the Nazi Party garnered two million votes and secured 32 seats in Congress, one of which was held by Strasser.
Do not underestimate this position. Apart from its accompanying influence, the position itself provides significant assistance to Strasser, giving him two advantages that Hitler does not have: he possesses a long-term free travel pass for the railways, which means that travel costs little for him personally or for the party. Additionally, he enjoys parliamentary immunity, meaning no authority can prohibit him from speaking in public.
No court can accuse him of defamation or anything else he wishes to do. As Hayden once remarked, "Free travel and free defamation—Strasser had a significant advantage over his leader from the start." To avoid provoking Hitler, who was angry about his opposition to participating in the elections, Strasser wrote a heartfelt letter to the released Hitler, filled with praise and admiration, expressing his intention to always follow the footsteps of the great leader, which greatly pleased Hitler.
He expressed satisfaction to Puck in prison, stating that Strasser was his loyal follower, unaware that this 'follower' had spent considerable effort to oppose him. Strasser knew he had to be cautious; his opponent was cunning and ruthless, skilled at manipulating others. Until he had grown stronger, he could not let Hitler perceive the threat he posed. Moreover, what Strasser was doing was not much different from what had happened in history. It was not that he did not want to take action, but rather that it was genuinely difficult to do so.
The reasons for Strasser's historical defeat against Hitler can be summarized in three main points:
1. He failed to organize his own armed forces. While Hitler had the Stormtroopers and, during the Night of the Long Knives, had the support of the Waffen-SS and the National Defense Forces, Strasser lacked any violent means to counter Hitler.
2. He did not unite all possible allies. Key figures within the Nazi faction, such as Goebbels and Himmler, ultimately betrayed him.
Hitler performed exceptionally well; he not only united the right-wing forces within the party but also garnered support from external groups such as the Juncker nobility, the royal family, the National Defense Forces, and big capitalists. This allowed Hitler to mobilize a far greater array of forces than Strasser, who relied on the working class, artisans, and petty bourgeoisie.
One should not assume that the latter's strength necessarily surpasses that of the former. In 1930s Germany, there were numerous left-wing parties that, while dividing their own power, also engaged in infighting. The presence of the Communist Party of Germany and the Social Democratic Party severely limited the forces Strasser could rally.
Thirdly, at critical moments, he was indecisive.
At the end of the Weimar Republic, Strasser believed that Hitler had become an insurmountable obstacle. If Hitler did not abandon his current practices, the Nazi Party would never be able to gain power through votes. Driven by this thought, on December 5, 1932, a group led by Strasser broke away from the Nazi Party.
This was Hitler's first major betrayal, and for this Hitler even mentioned that if the Nazi Party collapsed, he would commit suicide...
But at this critical moment, he once again hesitated and did not do everything in his power to deliver the final blow to Hitler.
As a result, Hitler miraculously gained the support of the Hindenburg who originally disliked him and was appointed as the Chancellor of Germany by Hindenburg.
After that, he lost power, until he was assassinated by the Waffen-SS during the "Night of the Long Knives" in 1934.
"Looking back now, the third issue could have been completely avoided; at least I don't see it as a problem now. As for the first issue, it needs to be resolved gradually," Strasser thought.
"That leaves only the second issue: how to unite the forces of the left?"
"This is truly a headache-inducing problem, but before that, I need to attend the trial of Adolf Hitler and watch a good show." Strasser stood up from the sofa, casually picked up his favorite brown suit, and left his villa, heading straight for the Bavaria Court.
In a car heading to the Bavaria Court, Adolf Hitler was leisurely gazing out at the scenery, happily whistling.
His current mood is very happy, after all, it's hard not to be excited when one is at the end of one's rope. Two days after the failed coup, Hitler thought that his struggle was over and he almost despaired and wanted to commit suicide. However, his sense of luck made him not give up hope until the last moment, so the suicide attempt was "prevented" by Puck's wife. When Hitler was arrested, he received news from his subordinates that Bavaria was not planning to execute him, but rather to bring him to court. Hitler suddenly felt alive again and felt invincible.
He began actively preparing to defend himself in court.
Hitler looked at the scenery outside the car window, the warm sunlight shining on his face. The fragrance of wildflowers by the roadside intoxicated him. Hitler immersed himself in the wonderful scenery, lying on his seat, and said to his assistant Hes beside him, "Rudolf, the scenery here is really beautiful. I must come back here for a stroll next year when I am released from prison."
