Ruan Yu slanted his narrow Eyes, his tone cold and harsh, "This kid! I knew that sparing his life back then would bring me trouble!"
"Young Commander, now is not the time to talk about this, please act quickly!" Cai Deputy Officer's voice was quite urgent.
Cheng Mosu pressed her crystalline ear against the cold wall, momentarily stunned. This Ruan Ke should be the Third Young Master mentioned by Jiexiang. It seems that at that time, Ruan Yu had not completely lost his humanity; at least he spared his own brother. She looked around calmly, gazing at the still standing Peach Tree outside the window, its casually scattered delicate petals responding to the increasingly unfavorable expression of the Heavenly Sovereign.
The door slowly opened, and she watched as Ruan Yu stepped inside, unable to help but smile gently.
"Mosu, did you hear everything just now?" Ruan Yu asked with a serious expression. She wasn't sure what he meant and simply nodded. Ruan Yu let out a bitter laugh, shedding his usual arrogance, his voice carrying a hint of chill, "I was confused back then too; I could actually do something like letting a tiger return to the mountain."
Cheng Mosu quietly looked at him, her Water Eyes misty, causing him to pause for a moment. "What good does it do to tell you these things? You probably know nothing."
She thought for a moment, her clear eyes filled with a trace of comfort and understanding, and the atmosphere instantly became transparent. He watched her smile whirlpool and listened to her soft voice dissipate in the air, "I know about your past."
"You know?" He narrowed his slanted Eyes. It made sense; where in the world is there a wall that doesn't let wind through? Everyone only submitted to him under threat for a while; these messages would still circulate behind his back. He looked at her gentle and quiet demeanor, curiosity creeping in. "Everyone fears me because of those things, yet you seem not to be afraid at all?"
She looked at his questioning expression and couldn't help but smile. "You treat me well; why should I be afraid of you?"
"I used to treat my father and brother well too," he replied coldly.
"If you really wanted to harm me, being afraid wouldn't help," her smile lingered in his eyes. He fell silent, simply watching her figure. It was at this moment that he realized that no matter what emotion it was, it would always be captured by the voice within. His original intention was to take her to the Battlefield, keeping her by his side at all times, but upon seeing her gentle smile, he changed his mind.
If possible, he wanted to watch the peach blossoms bloom and fall year after year with her, wanted to see the breeze pass through her jet-black hair, and wanted to hold her hand as they wandered around together.
His expression darkened, carrying a hint of sadness and dejection as he walked step by step toward Cheng Mosu, gazing into her Water-colored Eyes. The window was open, and the midday Sunlight poured down right between them, while a few flower petals drifted gently across her pale face in the breeze. On the table lay a poetry collection she had yet to finish reading, slowly turning its pages under the wind's influence.
She looked at his narrow Eyes, the light between her brows dimming. Her long Eyelashes hung softly down. He held her slender waist, pressing against her cool forehead.
"Mosu, do you think I will die this time?" His voice was soft, buried by the wind. She didn't know the answer and found it hard to respond, so she could only watch him quietly. He scoffed lightly, "Do you wish for me to die or to live?"
"I hope you live." Without hesitation, her soft yet firm voice reached deep into his heart. He smiled silently, reaching out to caress her fair neck, a rare tenderness in his narrow Eyes. "Mosu, that is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard in my life."
She opened her mouth, wanting to say something more, but he turned away and called out toward the door, "Cai Deputy Officer, come in!"
"Yes!"
With his back to her, she remained unaware that he had already buried his feelings. His voice floated in the air, "Cai Deputy Officer, go get a Pass for Young Mistress and send someone to safely escort her and Mr. Cheng back to Shanghai."
Cai Deputy Officer was momentarily stunned, unable to utter a word in surprise at his decision. He raised his voice and repeated himself; only then did Cai Deputy Officer hurriedly stand at attention and salute before exiting. He turned back to see Cheng Mosu's surprised expression and couldn't help but smile. "What's wrong? Your and Cai Deputy Officer's expressions tell me you've seen a ghost?"
"You..." She gazed at him quietly. "What’s going on with you?"
"I've let you go." His profile faced her; she couldn't see the turbulent emotions hidden in his Narrow Eyes.
She felt that he was acting strangely and didn't have time to feel joy as she stepped closer to him, scrutinizing him. "You..."
"Go with Jiexiang to get the Pass, then follow the people sent by Cai Deputy Officer to leave. Remember to be quick; I'm not a trustworthy person and can change my mind very quickly." He didn't look at her but could sense her fragrance drawing nearer and could imagine the shimmering light in those Water-colored Eyes.
She slowly opened her mouth, "Is it really that dangerous this time?"
He turned his head and looked at her calm lips, lost in thought for a moment before saying, "Well, Ruan Ke is more favored than I am. If he kills me, it's just settling a debt. Anyway, no one will be sad when I die. As for the position of Young Commander, whoever wants to sit in it can go ahead."
She bit her rose-colored lips, taking in his dejected appearance. She quietly watched him, and the entanglements with him suddenly began to fade away like old dreams. She slightly lowered her eyelashes, and a single tear fell to the ground with a soft plop, also landing in his heart, soaking it with desolation.
He actually smiled and reached out to wipe away the tears on her face. "You are such a kind girl, so good to everyone. I've imprisoned you for so long and have tried to harm you multiple times, even attempted to kill you several times, yet you can still shed a tear for me. I truly have no regrets."
"What nonsense are you talking about? What do you mean by dying or not?" She slowly reached out to wipe away the tear stains, her water-colored eyes shining with clarity. "They say good people don't live long and that calamities last for a thousand years. I think you won't die."
He raised an eyebrow, feeling his gloomy mood lighten a bit from her comforting words. He knew well that Ruan Ke's counterattack must have been thoroughly prepared over a long time. Coupled with his own poor reputation in recent years, the possibility of soldiers being swayed was high. This battle might not even start before he had already lost.
Debts owed and sins committed must eventually be repaid. He turned away and opened the door, unable to bear looking at Cheng Mosu one more time because she was his only attachment in this world.
The door gently closed behind him as she silently sat against the wall, her eyes quietly gazing at the blue sky outside. Her rose-colored lips pressed together lightly as hot tears streamed down her fair hands, not knowing whether they were celebrating something or mourning something else.
