“Zhu Family? Mr. Xiao, why do you say that?” Shangguan Yiting asked, slightly startled.
“I only heard Xiao Su mention that back in the day, the Jiang Family and Zhu Family conspired to eliminate the Cheng Family. I wonder if the Zhu Family still harbors the same intentions now?” He pondered for a moment before continuing, “But if that's the case, the Zhu Family is now allied with the Shangguan Family, and the Cheng Family has gone silent. There’s no reason for them to harm Xiao Su.”
Shangguan Yiting fell silent. Her thoughts were in turmoil as the perfectly timed tone and smile of Zhu Ye Feng flashed through her mind. She shook her head vigorously, trying to erase his image, biting her red lips lightly. “The biggest suspect is still Jiang Yating. She has always been dissatisfied with Cheng Mosu and has been trying to get close to our Shangguan Family.”
Just then, a light sound of footsteps came from outside the door. Several people paused, feeling that whatever they said was too coincidental.
Jiang Yating entered wearing a pale yellow Qipao, adorned with fine fox fur at the collar. She smiled slightly, her dark eyes shimmering with a radiant glow. The sunlight cast a halo over her brow, adding a touch of cleverness and reducing her mischievousness.
She smiled broadly, revealing pearly teeth. “Madam Zhu, it was quite inconsiderate not to invite me to yesterday's wedding banquet. You and Mr. Zhu met at my Father's banquet; I was your matchmaker, so how could I be left off the guest list?”
A hint of coldness flickered in Shangguan Yiting's eyes, but she maintained a polite smile. “Miss Jiang, you’re here uninvited now, aren’t you? And I suspect your visit isn’t just to question me about why I didn’t invite you.”
She tilted her head with a smile; the emotions hidden in her eyes were particularly rich yet inscrutable. Instead of answering Shangguan Yiting, she shifted her gaze to Xiao Zuowei and Yeh Zhenzhen. “Mr. Xiao and Miss Ye are also here. Thinking about it, it seems like quite a lot has happened with the Shangguan Family.”
“What does anything happening with the Shangguan Family have to do with you?” Yeh Zhenzhen could hardly contain her anger. She always approached problems directly and subconsciously regarded Jiang Yating as responsible for harming Cheng Mosu, treating her as an enemy. “Miss Jiang, you are not welcome here; you are the culprit!”
Xiao Zuowei frowned and quickly shielded the agitated Yeh Zhenzhen. Initially taken aback, Jiang Yating soon smiled, her fair and beautiful face radiating amusement. “Really? I thought something serious was going on since you all seem so hostile towards me. All this time, you believed I harmed Consort Shangguan?”
“Didn’t you? Stop pretending to be good! That limerick from back then was written at your family's behest!” Ignoring Xiao Zuowei’s attempt to stop her, Yeh Zhenzhen leaned out from behind him, her voice clear as a lark but lacking any real impact.
“Of course not,” Jiang Yating replied, her gaze shifting playfully. “Why would I want to harm Consort Shangguan?”
"Because you have feelings for Shangguan Shaoshuai!"
"Oh?" She dimmed her eyes, but the smile at the corners of her lips remained unchanged, her beautiful brows mixed with complex emotions. "What is liking, and what is not liking? I am unclear about such feelings. Madam Zhu, I think you should understand this..."
Shangguan Yiting was taken aback and fell silent. The young ladies like them had lost the chance to encounter love since childhood, always wearing away their expectations of love in the midst of unrequited feelings. In the end, those who could walk hand in hand with them would only be those bound by interests and of equal social standing. Neither she nor Jiang Yating could escape such a fate.
"In fact, I have always felt that Madam Zhu, you and I are quite similar." Jiang Yating lowered her eyes, her long eyelashes casting a shadow around her eye sockets. "We both prioritize family interests, but the difference is that you seem to know what feelings are. You care for Shaoyi and take good care of Consort Shangguan, even going so far as to use any means necessary to win your husband. As for me, apart from my father's orders and my mother's instructions, I have never chosen anything for myself and do not understand what feelings are."
Shangguan Yiting closed her eyes. Ever since she first met Jiang Yating, she felt that they were exceptionally similar; only Jiang Yating was more ruthless. Each time she looked at Jiang Yating, she could see that annoying reflection of herself. She bit her lip and deliberately distanced herself from Jiang Yating. "Miss Jiang, did you come all this way just to share your pain with me?"
Jiang Yating smiled silently, raised her eyes, and returned to her usual demeanor, her smile charming and her eyes bright. "Of course not; I just wanted to visit Consort Shangguan."
"Mo Su does not need your visit." Before Shangguan Yiting could speak, Ye Yeh Zhenzhen interjected with a refusal. Although she sympathized with Jiang Yating for being born into such a profit-driven and cold family, Jiang Yating was ultimately the prime suspect; how could she allow Jiang Yating to approach Mo Su?!
Jiang Yating looked at her flushed face, like peach blossoms or evening clouds, and couldn't help but smile. "Miss Ye seems quite adorable. I wasn't present at the time; my family didn't attend the wedding banquet either. Moreover, I was attending a ball in Hot Province that day and only arrived in New North this morning. With such ample evidence, can't it prove my innocence?"
"Hmph! What you said has no proof at all! If you're just talking nonsense, how would we know?!" Ye Yeh Zhenzhen pouted, her grape-like sparkling eyes revealing dazzling light.
Jiang Yating smiled helplessly and pointed to the newspaper on the linen table. "Yesterday a reporter took photos and interviewed; it made the news. You can take a look."
Ye Yeh Zhenzhen was taken aback for a moment, thought for a while, and continued sulkily: "So what? You can easily instruct others! If you do everything yourself, wouldn't that be too exhausting?"
"It seems Miss Ye has quite a misunderstanding about me." She found Ye Yeh Zhenzhen very cute and wasn't angry; she calmed herself down.
Yeh Zhenzhen looked at Jiang Yating's shining eyes in confusion, unaware that Jiang Yating's thoughts were swirling, filled with the conversation from a few days ago with Zhu Ye Feng.
That day, the moon was bright and the stars were few, and the light was dazzling.
She quietly sat on a stone bench, allowing the lukewarm light to envelop her, causing ripples in her lifeless eyes. Behind her was the smiling Zhu Ye Feng. She turned to look at him, meeting his deep gaze, and couldn't help but smile. "Mr. Zhu, have you made all the arrangements?"
"Miss Jiang, you can rest assured to go to Hot Province. At tomorrow's wedding banquet, I will add a potion to the drinks for Shangguan Shaoying. By then, Miss Jiang should not feel sorry." His voice carried a hint of teasing that inexplicably made her angry.
As if in defiance, she said, "Why should I be angry? It would be best to kill Shangguan Shaoyi like this! As long as he is alive, my father will never have peace. He opposes our Jiang Family at every turn; I wish he would die sooner." As she spoke, she felt her heart being violently emptied, and a stream of tears flowed down from her clear eyes, filled with heat and unwillingness.
She lifted her countenance from the memories, a hint of an inscrutable smile on her lips.
Clearly, Zhu Ye Feng had not succeeded in killing Shaoyi last night; instead, he had accidentally poisoned Cheng Mosu. Although the plan had not been completed, why did her heart reveal joy irregularly...
